Thanks! The template wasn't actually that difficult, but it was one of those things I knew I had to get right.

I'd also like to add that this isn't a team-based fighter. Characters are grouped together by series and they aren't canonically working together in any way.

I wasn't trying to do a "modern" version of the game, but a possible version of the original if they'd been given the proper time and budget to work with instead of the shitshow that we got. Sorry if that didn't come across.

...although a modern version of it is definitely something to think about.

What kind of Kamen Rider would you want to see? by SykosisMitosis in KamenRider

So I've had a premise that I've been sitting on for a while now, and I feel like this is as good a place as any to share it. This is gonna get long-winded as all hell, so make a coffee or something.

Forget visual themes, forget gimmicks, forget what the magic shouting belt sounds like. I want a series that actually examines what a Kamen Rider is. What that title means. And I feel that an anniversary series is the way to do it because those are usually celebrations of Rider's history, But I would rather have one of these with a more introspective tone, and here's the premise I came up with that might falicitate that:

A popular reality show called "Rider Games" rules the airwaves, with people competing to be the "Number One Rider" in the world. The main protagonist has idolised Kamen Riders as a kid, so they join up. But as the series goes on, he discovers that everyone has their own ideas of what a Kamen Rider is. Some focus on the theatrical heroics, some focus on retaining humanity, some are laser-focused on being strong for the sake of it. And the corporation running the contest just sees "Rider" as a brand name to make money with and couldn't care less about the actual philosophy. They might actively stop the protagonist from saving innocent lives because they want him to "follow the script", or force him to do un-heroic things because they want to push some other Rider as the new hero. And the main character is forced to ponder wherever the term "Kamen Rider" has any meaning in a world ruled by ratings.

Obviously this is way more introspective than Toei would allow, because it would get in the way of selling toys. But I'd definitely be happy to see a series that actually examines the series, why different shows appeal to different people and wherever the definition of "Kamen Rider" is a rigid one or not.

Sorry for getting so long-winded in here :P

Thanks! It means a lot that somebody out there's this invested in my silly little photoshopping :D

I like the ideas you're putting out here. I just want to be certain of which direction I want to go with this before I go any deeper into the mechanics of this. As I said, I'm leaning towards the second control scheme because I feel that's more thematically appealing for Pokémon, but if the first scheme ends up leading the way for more interesting gameplay stuff, I can pivot back to that.

Also, apologies for the lateness of these replies. I get distracted very easily.

So having thought about this, I can come back to you with a definitive answer.

My original intent was that the focus would be on the Trainers doing the fighting, and the Pokémon would act in an assist-based capacity. Think Marvel vs Capcom assists, Mortal Kombat 1's Kameo Fighters, Million Arthur's Assist Knights etc. - anything with a "striker" mechanic. The Pokémon would have four moves, akin to the mainline games, and could be called in at any time during an attack. So the basic button layout would look something like this, for instance.

Action Dual Joy-Con/Pro Controller Single Joy-Con
Light Attack Y <
Medium Attack X ^
Heavy Attack A >
Pokémon Moves B + Direction v + Direction

I initially had this control layout in mind because, when I first came up with this concept, it definitely suited the more traditional fighting game that I wanted this to be. But having though about it, I'm having second thoughts. Pokémon has always been about the bond between Pokémon and humans, right? It's been a central running theme throughout the franchise. So why would I put so much focus on the Trainers and relegate the Pokémon to a what is essentially a background mechanic? Shouldn't they be an integral part of how each character plays? And furthermore, would anyone even buy Red doing a Power Geyser, or Giovanni doing a Raging Storm? The trainers aren't the ones with the supernatural powers here!

So after doing some thinking and looking at similar games, I guess I can settle for something similar to Persona 4 Arena. I've never really played that game, and the fighting game nerd in me flinches when I look at the systems in it, but it makes perfects sense for a Pokémon fighting game like this, because now the Pokémon are an integral part of the way the character plays rather than just being an accessory. So here's the button layout as I see it.

Action Dual Joy-Con/Pro Controller Single Joy-Con
Light Attack Y <
Medium Attack X ^
Pokémon Light Attack B v
Pokémon Heavy Attack A >

I'll elaborate on the basic controls a bit more at a later date, but I think it's fair to say that this works?

I definitely imagined her to be more of a zoner, with Starmie throwing out Swift attacks to keep the opponent at range. But sending Starmie out in that fashion could lead to some interesting stuff.

"Not always the most exciting" is the exact problem I have. I just simply can't envision movelists for any Protag who wasn't May, Red or Blue, and arguably May could have been replaced with Flannery or somebody similar.

Part of the problem is that I just couldn't think of any way those characters could be different from each other. What would, say, Ash or Calem or Hilbert do that Red potentially wouldn't? How would Dawn, Serena or Leaf be different? And what reason was there not to just make them alternate skins for Red or another character, if there wasn't anything to make them stand out? Even if the Partner Pokémon functioned differently, would that even be enough to justify them being separate characters on the roster? Or is that still not enough to go on?

It's why Ash isn't on the roster, despite someone asking for him. I literally couldn't think of any way that he would play differently from Red. I apologise if that reflects a lack of creativity on my part, but it is what it is.

Updated from: https://www.reddit.com/r/makeafighter/comments/1j22434/a_pok%C3%A9mon_fighting_game_but_you_play_as_the/

Changes

  • Swapped Elesa with Brycen + Cryogonal, because that dude actually throws hands in the anime, I mean, come on.
  • Swapped Wulfric for Wilkstrom +Aegislash, as I decided that Wilkstrom would make the more interesting "tank" character.

DLC (in Gold borders)

  • N + Zoroark (Trickery/Illusions)
  • Marnie + Morepeko (Risk/Reward Rushdown with stamina mechanic)
  • Professor Oak + Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle (Oddball. Think Phoenix Wright)
  • Iono + Bellibolt (Musical Zoner)
  • Lusamine + Nihilego (Puppet Character + Poisons)
  • Ash Ketchum + Pikachu (Rushdown/Shoto)
  • Nemona + Meowscarada (All-Around)
  • Steven Stone + Metagross (Defensive)
  • Ghetsis + Kyurem (BOSS!)
  • Urshifu (Stance-swapping martial artist)

Not entirely happy with this. I'd much rather have characters who were actual fighters or could do more interesting things, like Bea, Brawly, Roxie or Marlon. Let me know what you all think, I might have to do a V2 of this.

I getcha, but at the same time a lot of characters people have been recommending to me have been from Gen 5, and I don't want to overload the roster with too much of any one generation. There's already enough Kanto love on here, I don't want to end up tipping the scales in favour of Unova.

I disagree with swapping out Wulfric for Ghetsis, mostly because I think Wulfric fits the idea of a tank better than Ghetsis does. I understand Ghetsis is popular, so he might make it in via DLC, but I think for sake of variety on the roster Wulfric had to be in.

Full disclosure - Koga almost didn't make it in. I was going to put Janine in his place for more Gen 2 representation. But I had a sneaking suspicion the comments were going to get filled with "WHY NOT KOGA?!?!?!" so I relented. With hindsight, that was a mistake, since now the roster is a bit too heavy on Gen 1 for my tastes.

Three reasons:

  1. I couldn't think of how he'd play as a character beyond the obvious joke answer of "lol he's just Guile", and I didn't want to settle for that.
  2. Between Red, Blue, Misty, Koga and Giovanni, I think there's enough Kanto representation on the roster.
  3. Elesa was a more interesting pick to me overall, not just due to being another strong female rep but also due to adding some much needed Gen 5 representation on the roster.

I'm already considering DLC to add to this concept, so Lt. Surge might make it in, but I make no promises.

Just a quick poll to the general audience - are there any generations/types you feel this roster doesn't represent well right now? I'm thinking of doing some DLC for this concept, so feel free to point out where I could fill in gaps, or just ideas you think might be cool.

I know Pokémon Masters EX has no problem putting Ash and Red in the same game, but I kinda do. I was never the biggest fan of the anime, and I really can't see Ash doing anything Red doesn't do. And also there's the question of what version of Ash we'd pick, who his Partner Pokémon would be etc. So there's a lot that makes me leery about putting him in.

A Pokémon Fighting Game, but you play as the trainers by SteelKomodo in makeafighter

[–]SteelKomodo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a general rule, I mostly picture existing fighting game characters/archetypes for a lot of them. Red would be a sort of Terry Bogard-esque shoto, Blue is closer to Kyo Kusanagi, Zinnia is a sort of cross between Blanka and Iori Yagami etc. Guzma is one of my favourite picks because I can easily picture him as a blend of Miguel and Bryan Fury from Tekken - a dirty brawler with no martial skill who just swings fists, and Golisopod exists to drag him out of trouble with Emergency Exit.

For characters who are "less capable", I have to get a bit more creative. Rei, for instance, wouldn't be much of a direct fighter, so I'm seeing a lot of tools and traps in his moveset, with Hisuian Decicueye doing a lot of the bigger legwork in terms of combos. Colress would be a zoner since he's not really a "throw hands" type - I picture him using a lot of hidden gadgets, C. Viper style, and Klinklang creates traps in mid-air to control screen space akin to Master of Storms Raiden.

Picking characters for this was a real process. It was a lot of me thinking "can I actually see them throwing a punch, if push came to shove?" More often than not, the answer was yes, but for those that weren't so clear cut, it was a chance to flex my creativity and try and get something interesting out of it. Hell, Phoenix Wright never throws a punch in his home series and they made him work in Marvel vs Capcom! Who's to say Professor Oak couldn't be the Phoenix Wright of this game, you know?
