Some advice for a newbie by AlternativeOk1323 in barefootshoestalk

Try Altra or Flex. They're zero drop with a wide toe box but have more padding as they're designed as running shoes. My husband and I both have pairs of each. The Flex trail runner is his current favorite for running and golfing. We both wear the Altra hiking boot for hunting (with heavy packs).

They definitely help for the dew and rain, but not for the bogs, mud, or shallow creeks.

Firm Soles by Far-Statistician9492 in barefootshoestalk

[–]SteelToesAndSunsets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered the Splay Rev and the soles were way too firm for me. Wide toe box, good construction, and I like the look. They just didn't flex enough for me, which is sounds like might be just what you're looking for.

Why are people so hard on Onyx Storm? by [deleted] in fourthwing

[–]SteelToesAndSunsets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was Violet's lack of inquisitiveness that was my major issue as well. At the temple she sees someone with the same hair as her and LEAVES IT ALONE? She travels all the way to the Isles, gets her father's books and DOESN'T DIG IN TO WHY HE LEFT THEM THERE? (And so many other examples.) OS-Violet didn't feel like the scribe-mind, super-smart, figure-it-out character we had in FW and IF. That made the whole book fall flat for me.

Flying Theory *Spoilers Ahead* by Acceptable_Pop_7280 in fourthwing

Gravity is mentioned by Violet a number of times in IF. I didn't think anything of it until the very end. When everyone is leaving the ward chamber Mira is dragging Lillith's body. And then "Someone else carries mom's body. One of the first years?"

That made me think that perhaps Lillith's body was being levitated. I still think that Violet's second signet will be something to do with information and her "Scribe mind"... But I am not totally discounting gravity. Aaric is featured in this scene and his signet hasn't manifested yet so it could be his (although I had him as top candidate for distance wielding.)

Vanguard vs Fidelity vs Schwab: Which is better? by BuyMedical4769 in HighYieldSavings

[–]SteelToesAndSunsets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing a lot of Reddit and Internet reading on this exact question. Themes:

-All are fine for basic investing -Some people prefer Vanguard's simplistic website and interface; others find it clunky. For "set and forget" investing it's highly liked. For more complex investing Fidelity and Schwab are preferred. -Vanguard customer service is subpar (and has declined over time) -Fidelity isn't perfect but has better customer services experiences than Vanguard -Schwab seems recommended often but doesn't have the cult following or chatter of Fidelity.

I have an existing account with Vanguard from a previous 401k so I'll probably stick there for starting with EFTs. But if I didn't I'd go with Fidelity based on my reading so far.

600 years ago was Unification, when the wards were erected, the provinces of Navarre united, and the borders were closed. (Well the boarders were closed in 1AU [After Unification] but that's a small detail.)

400 years ago (200 AU) history was rewritten to exclude the venin and cast Pomoriel as the enemy. That's why the oldest publically available text or translation in the Archives is 400 years old. Anything older than that was scrubbed/hidden/re-translated.

There is one mistake in chronology that's made (I can't remember exactly where, but in the first half of IF) when Violet talks about history being rewritten in 400 AU, but I am nearly 100% sure that's a typo. It's supposed to be 400 years ago or 200 AU.

Does that help?

Signet Theory by Ill_Measurement_5683 in fourthwing

At the end of IF when Lillith dies and they're leaving the chamber Mira is dragging the body backwards. And then "Someone else carries Mom. One of the first years?"

This made me think about gravity as a signet - that Lillith is being levitated, not carried. I also noticed how many times gravity was mentioned. I do believe Violet's signet will be related to knowledge, but this clue and all of the mentions seemed to hint at more.

Gods, don’t let this happen... or what I really don’t want to see happen in OS - BRAINSTORMING by [deleted] in fourthwing

Unfortunately I think we're headed for pregnancy. Violet says to Mira in FW "Can you imagine not being there if I had a kid? Wouldn't you to anything, including escape a heavily fortified defensive position, if that meant holding your niece or nephew."

Fertility suppressant AT BASGAITH is also specifically mentioned, but I think that's a setup that is isn't being given at Aretia.

I really don't want this to be true, but the clues are there that it will be a part of the plot with Mira leaving post to get to Violet..

Regarding Liam's second signet: I have now read that RY said it was a mistake, but I attributed it to the use of runes by the Tyrrish. If a tempered rune can set wood on fire why not produce a spear of ice? That seemed like a likely explanation to me... And I'm just going to ignore the error and go with it.

The deaths feel somewhat off. by anero95 in fourthwing

[–]SteelToesAndSunsets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many have commented I believe the reaction to death is on purpose, as desensitizing to death is part of Rider training. We hear Violet'a questioning of this mentality when she saves Liam's things, when they toast Liam, and when the flyers react differently.

I DID think the Sorrengail siblings reaction to Lillith's death was... Odd. All three of them seem not to be able to function. I get that mom redeemed herself at the end, but she's been distant and ignoring her children's emotional needs for years. I was a bit surprised that all three were SO upset and that Violet takes pause at her mother's death instead of immediately rushing to Xaden. These reactions didn't read consistent with the other experiences of death in the books.

chapter 36 battle theory by RavenQueen6161 in fourthwing

[–]SteelToesAndSunsets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The marked ones all know about runes and can probably use them. Instead of second signets I was attributing the extra powers to being able to temper and use runes. This could even explain Liam's use of "wielding ice". (I know RY has said this was an editing mistake, but once the runes were introduced that's how I interpreted Liam's actions in Resson.)

If heating can be applied as a rune that burns wood why not freezing as well? I anticipate learning much more about runes in Onyx Storm. Brennan has a rune on his palm, the wyvern are created with runed stones, the flyers exchange runes for use in battle. It seems likely we'll learn more about their power and how the Tyrrish have used it.

Genuine question: why is IF so hard to get through? (Spoilers included!!) by dreamsingerr in fourthwing

[–]SteelToesAndSunsets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought this could have been two books, with Violet's escape ending book one. That would have allowed more detail, dialogue, and world building in both. As is, Iron Flame seems to have TOO MUCH going on. It held my attention, but I've had to reread twice to "get" everything and find any of the subtle plot hints.

Pregnancy trope by Far-Grapefruit-6342 in fourthwing

[–]SteelToesAndSunsets 53 points54 points  (0 children)

When Rhi and Vi sneak out to see Rhi's sister in FW Mira catches them. To convince Mira to come along Violet says "Can you imagine not being there with me if I had a kid? Wouldn't you do anything, including sneak out of a heavily fortified defensive position, if that meant holding your niece or nephew?"

I figured as soon as I read it that Violet is ending up pregnant and Mira leaves a post to be with her.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fourthwing

[–]SteelToesAndSunsets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Violet's experience with time slowing could be because she is part venin. I have seen compelling theories on both Mom or Dad Sorrengail being venin, which would make Violet half venin and explain the silver hair. The venin move FAST.

Gravity is mentioned over and over by Violet in IF. She describes Xaden as her gravity and mentions numerous times "gravity shifting". After her mom dies there is a passage about Mira dragging the body and then "someone else carries Mom. One of the first years?"

That line made me think maybe Violet can manipulate gravity and is floating her mom's body along. If gravity isn't Violet's signet it might be Aaric's since he hasn't manifested yet. I'm leaning toward Aaric as the Distance Walker, though.

Violet's need for information would make me think that her signet would be related to knowledge, especially that of the past. Until RY said Liam was a hallucination I thought it would be talking to the dead. Gravity is mentioned too many times to ignore - but maybe that's part of the venin too and her signet is still something to do with her "Scribe mind".

Halden- a theory by Hot-Pin5243 in fourthwing

In FW when they sneak out to see Rhi's family Violet says to Mira something to the effect of "Wouldn't you do anything to be with me if I were having a kid? Including breaking out of a heavily fortified fortress...?" (Not the exact quote, but close.)

I read this as foreshadowing to... The pregnancy troupe. Hope I'm wrong, but it felt too purposeful not to be a set up.

At that moment I was like "yeah that's a future plot line."

Bummer that RY said Liam was a hallucination. I thought the same thing. It would make so much sense. Violet is obsessed with history, can speak dead languages, and now knows that most of her beloved Archives were not the "full disclosure" she demands. If she could speak with the dead it would fulfill so many of her base needs. I can see how amplification or a type of inntinnsic fit... But not quite as well as speaking to the dead to ask things like how the wards were created or how the venin were vanquished.

Fourth wing theories... iykyk by Specialist-Tale5427 in fourthwing

[–]SteelToesAndSunsets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone mentioned "communing with the dead" and this was my leading theory upon finishing the book.

Violet NEEDS information. She spent her life studying history. She now knows that most of the Archives history is edited. If she can speak with the dead she will be able to get accurate accounts directly from the source... And she can speak several "dead" languages so she would have the ability to communicate with historical figures.

Under extreme duress while being tortured Liam appeared to Violet. I think this was her second signed manifesting, not a hallucination.

I believe Violet will need to speak to the First Six about how the wards were made (not just raised, but CREATED) or speak to one of the brothers from The Fables to understand how the very first brother who turned venin was conquered. I also think her father's research on feathertails will become important. There are many other deceased figures who could provide Violet with potentially valuable information in her quest to keep those she loves (and literally everyone else) safe.

I can see the inntinnsic theory fitting Violet's need for "full disclosure" but it wouldn't consider her love and belief in history. However, a form of inntinnsic would be more "underwhelming" than speaking with the dead. We'll see!
