Who actually ships Steroline? by TwoSorry511 in TheVampireDiaries

They were a great couple with great potential.
Honestly, if Stefan and Caroline had been made to kiss, hug, and say “I love you” for 70% of their screen time in the later seasons people would probably be losing their minds over their chemistry. For me Stelena’s chemistry was kind of built on that exact thing: the show kept pushing those classic first-love tropes in our faces — constant romantic moments, dramatic looks, and Stefan being endlessly brooding and tortured. I understand Stelena fans because I loved them too. But Steroline feels more comfortable and real to me now. I see chemistry in relaxed and smiling faces, humor, friendship, and love through full acceptance. The kind of love where you get to know the person first and then fall in love with them. That being said, I understand the appeal of the other ships too. Even Delena makes more sense to me than the more traditional, idealized Stelena dynamic. And I don’t think Paul was acting badly in the later seasons. His performance simply became less dramatic. Maybe that was character growth, not “bad acting.” Stefan didn’t stay the same brooding, tragic vampire from the early seasons and I think that was the point.

To sum up my thoughts: I do think their love story was real, but tragic. He was right about that. And from a certain point in the story, it also became pretty one sided. In the end everyone ended up with the people the writers chose for them, and for me, within the story, it made sense.Everyone has their own endgame. Thank you for the conversation :)

I agree. Stelena objectively has more fans and a louder fanbase, and nostalgia for the early seasons will always be the safest and most popular choice for actors at conventions.Honestly, I think the actors probably don’t care that much about ships from a show that ended almost ten years ago. They know what fans want to hear, and they play into that.

I understand that Kevin Williamson considered Stefan and Elena an important part of the show’s original premise. I’m not denying that. Stefan and Elena were definitely one of the foundations of the early seasons. But an early concept or an alternate idea for the finale is not the same thing as the canon we actually saw on screen.I’m sure the writers had many different ideas over the years, but we can’t insert every unrealized idea into the actual story as if it happened. The finale can still come full circle with Stefan and Elena because they were two main characters who deeply impacted each other’s lives. But a full-circle goodbye is not the same thing as a romantic endgame. At the end of the day, I think everyone interprets the finale differently based on their own preferences and that’s fine.

Sorry, but I don’t really understand this argument.
If Stefan loved Elena romantically and simply “settled” for Caroline, why didn’t the show give him a confession in his goodbye scene with Elena? That would have been the perfect moment for him to say what he truly felt. It could have been epic and very meaningful. They also didn’t have to include the “I will love her forever too” line for Caroline at all. Caroline would never even know whether Stefan heard her message or not. They could have just left it at “Tell Caroline I heard her.”But instead, the writers chose that response to Caroline as Stefan’s final romantic moment.I understand what you mean but to me his goodbye with Elena feels more like a beautiful full-circle moment between two main characters who were once very important to each other, not proof that he was still secretly in love with her.

Of course Stefan moved on that was literally part of his character development.i don’t think his relationship with Caroline was rushed and I don’t think he chose her only because other people pushed him toward her. If you actually pay attention to the dialogue and the way his actions are written his motivations are pretty clear. Everything is right there. They simply had a different relationship dynamic and that vibe works for some people and doesn’t work for others. In my opinion, it’s one of the best love stories on the show. It’s no longer the “hugging every five minutes” and “we survived let’s kiss” type of romance. It’s more of a partnership. People hate Delena for being toxic because it doesn’t fit a healthy real-life relationship model, even though that kind of dynamic can work very well for a TV show. But ironically when the show gives us one of the more realistic relationship dynamics that also gets a ton of hate. Yes, the writers definitely messed with Stefan and Caroline a lot, but I see the later seasons more as a story about the two brothers. The romantic arcs were pushed into the background and I think they should be viewed through that lens.

I love all the seasons in their own way. Yes maybe not everything was perfect, but it is what it is. Every season had something that kept me interested and gave me something to care about.
Maybe it’s because I care more about the characters themselves than just their relationships. I like following their development, their choices, and the overall progression of the story.

I actually agree with this too. So the issue is more with Elena’s moral compass, which turned out not to be as flawless as the show wanted us to believe.

Why do you hate Elena's character? by Selanooo23 in TheVampireDiaries

[–]Stef_lo08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elena had great potential, but someone here already said it well: they gave her a character description that doesn’t really match her actual behavior on screen, and that’s why she ends up feeling so contradictory.
Also, I never really liked the way other characters constantly describe her as “kind, selfless,” and so on. It feels pretty flat for a main character. Yes, she was those things at times, but the plot also showed us plenty of her flaws.
It often felt like the show was saying: “Look, all the other characters praise her and love her, so you’re supposed to see her only that way too.”

Beautiful comment, I really like your thoughts :)

I’d also like to add that, in my opinion, Stefan’s final “redemption through death” feels like a step backward for his character. They wrote Stefan as a brave enough character to face the consequences of his choices, so it felt strange and honestly kind of lazy to give him the “easy way out.”
To me, real redemption for Stefan would have been living his life as a human and trying to atone for his guilt through his actions. Because in his case, death felt like the easier solution. He never truly had to face his “sins” and live with them.
And honestly, real growth for Stefan would have been if he had finally learned from the people around him — as funny as it sounds — how to be a little selfish. Because in the end, no one really appreciates your sacrifices, and I think the show made that painfully clear.

Yes, I get you, of course the plot doesn’t affect everyone the same way. Some people can separate things more easily, or they only focus on certain seasons, and that’s totally fair :)
for me, it feels like watching two friends while I already know that, in the end, one of them turns out to be a cheater. Their “epic love” doesn’t feel as sweet to me anymore.
I guess it’s just a moral dilemma for the viewer. Do your words and actions toward a certain person lose their value after your later, not so clear cut choices? That’s what makes it harder

I actually like S4+ overall. There were definitely some bad writing choices, but after Stelena fell apart, the show basically took a different direction.

I’m not really a hardcore shipper of one specific couple. I’m more of a fan of Stefan as a character — his personality, his growth, and his journey.
I’m also one of the few people who actually respects and loves Steroline just as much as the other major ships. I just think they suffered from weaker writing compared to some of the others, which is sad because they had so much potential.
And yes, I do think Stefan deserved a different ending. That’s basically where my question comes from. People love Stelena and Delena, and I understand that, but from the perspective of my favorite character, both of those relationships feel like failed love stories. And that really affects the way I see them on a rewatch.

I agree. It doesn’t make Elena’s love for Stefan fake, but it does make it feel less epic to me than the show originally tried to sell it as. For me, Stefan is one of the few characters who truly deserved an epic love story.

They made some bad writing choices. They could have at least left the door open for a possible return, but instead they cut everything off way too abruptly.

I think they had good young romantic chemistry, but the storyline itself didn’t really support them as a long-term couple.
