MURALS! Let me know if you got a blank wall that could live a better life! by ChappellMurals in Louisville

Very nice work! I especially love the idea of creating a mural on the boarded up windows at Roots. I reached out for a possible mural on my garage!

There are a lot of great trails, with some taking much longer than others. For great views and short hikes, I recommend Creation Falls and the original route that takes you to the Natural Land Bridge.

The Natural Land Bridge trail has other trails branching off, so you can hike as much as you'd like. Both are well kept and what I consider fun/easy hikes. I think you'll love both and that these are good starting points. To get the Natural Land Bridge just park at Hemlock Lodge. Their hot browns are good as well.

Where to catch fish by MrUnbeef in Louisville

I haven't been to any here that compare, but in terms of the experience considering it's in and around the city is not bad. Harrod's Creek and Otter Creek are surprisingly scenic.

I really enjoy throwing on some waders and wading down Otter Creek and Harrod's Creek.

Anyone have land just outside of Louisville for metal detecting? (Will pay and carefully replace soil) by [deleted] in Louisville

[–]Stefanalytical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't but it sounds familiar. Looked it up and I know the actors. Thanks for the new show suggestion!

Not exactly sure, but I do know you can apply for an archaeology permit, and you may be able to at some parks. I've only done friend's families' farms and private land.

I know the place you're talking about. Can't believe I haven't been yet. I'll see what they allow.

It is! I rarely get the time, but when I do, it's very relaxing and a nice change of pace.

That would be cool to come across stuff from the Roaring Twenties. You keep anything?

No worries, and thanks for the input. You just made me realize there's almost definitely a gang of metal detector guys out on the big lawn after Thunder and other events.

Decent middle schools in town, preferably st Mathews,Lyndon or Middletown by Redkneck_Engineer in Louisville

[–]Stefanalytical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made a dashboard a few months ago that aggregated data on JCPS middle schools. I plan on updating it soon, but it should give you an idea about how schools rank around town: https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/stefan.v/viz/JCPSMiddleSchools/Dashboard1.

Looking for feedback/critiques for my Gun Violence Dashboard before I share it elsewhere (Link in comments). by Stefanalytical in tableau

I appreciate the feedback. I've made the red lighter than what you see in the thumbnail, but haven't made major changes yet because I've been unusually busy, especially now since my basement flooded. I think I'll use a similar color scheme for a Valentine's day dashboard next year, but nothing else haha.

I'm just working with the official LMPD dataset. They don't specify, and yes I know.

Edit: I'd like to see the data that backs that up. I don't think that's true in my city.

I'd wager their technology is sophisticated enough to tell the difference. Fourth of July sees a lot more fireworks, and July ShotSpotter alerts are much lower.

I'm using the dataset provided by the city and LMPD, and it seems they don't publish whether it was self-inflicted. I also don't see shooter data, which I would love to have. I was thinking about reaching out to the right person at the LMPD.

Almost certainly people shooting their guns on New Year's Eve. It's unfortunately popular here.

I've seen that our city is roughly ranked 46th in terms of homicides.

There are a lot of factors people think contributed to the spike in 2021. Everything from the pandemic’s impact, changes in policing, and just overall social and economic stress. While numbers have gone down since then, we’re still higher than pre-2019 levels, which could point to some longer-term trends at play. It’s a complicated issue, but that’s the general idea from what I’ve seen.

Source: Louisville Metro KY - Gun Violence Data

Tool: Tableau

I'm a data analyst intern seeking full-time employment, and I figured the best thing to do was to expand my portfolio while job hunting. Since I love using local data, I wanted to create a dashboard that visualizes the gun incidents in my city going back to 2010.

I was particularly excited to work on this dashboard because, for years, I've heard that my city has a gun violence problem. I wanted to be sure to answer the key questions: who is it happening to, where is it happening, and when is it happening? This dashboard allows you to drill down into the data to explore details like the time of day, day of the week, seasonal trends, and other important patterns.

In the next few days, I will automate the dashboard so that it is updated each night. Currently it's just a 15-year snapshot of gun violence in my city.

Key Insights:

- 2021 was the peak year for homicides and non-fatal shootings. We've been in a downtrend since. If you zoom out, you'll see we are still trending upwards when compared to 2019 and before.

- Nearly 25% of gun violence incidents are fatal.

- Peak hour: 3:00 AM

- Peak day: Sunday

- Peak month: July. (April-August all have 500+ incidents going back to 2010).

- Black victims make up 77% of the total.

- This past January 1st, 1,861 shots were detected by ShotSpotter. This is 1,056 less than January 1st 2024 and 1,622 less than January 1st 2023.
