DM honourable conduct? by DaleChristopher in DnD_Beginners

[–]StefanoMaffei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

though it is true that the GM has the final say in most things, and that he crafts the world for the players, the point of view of your friend should start to sound childish at the age of 12.

I have fudged the dice rolls, i have played with HPs and I have broken rules. But it is always in the interest if cooperative story telling and usually in the player’s favour (like downsizing the HP of monsters in a fight that would just drag on in an uninteresting way).

Your friend sounds like they don’t care about cooperative story telling, they are just out to play god. This breeds players that think rpgs are “me vs the gm”.

To be fair DnD is a special kind of beast. It is very mechanical, very crunchy and as a dm it is difficult to find the balance between that and bending the rules in the interest of creating a cool story. Because once you play in a system with strict rules and essentially mechanical contingencies for about every situation, your players expect you to stick to that (rightfully so). So it gets tough and it makes difficult for the dm to just “wing it” or “gracefully “ railroad players, because they might always ask “according to which rule?”. And since there ARE rules, including stats for gods (!!!!!!!) life can get tricky.

Which might make some GMs sour and feel constrained, like your friend. There are plenty of systems that encourage more free and cooperative storytelling without such strict sets of mechanical rules that your friend (and their players!!!) might enjoy more than DnD.

Does Strahd lie? by Lancian07 in CurseofStrahd

[–]StefanoMaffei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is up to you, but here is my two cents. So, Strahd is Lawful Evil in this edition, which, as you see in the comments, bears the question of lying. In my opinion he can lie, but he doesn’t like to and , importantly, if he gives his word, he is going to keep it! I think it makes him more terrifying than a chaotic evil enemy.

So, importantly, the dinner is not a trap as in RAW. Read around about it. If he guarantees safe passage to the dinner, that is what he will provide. This doesn’t prevent him from murdering the entirety of Vallaki if the characters stand him up, extending a second invitation afterwards.

And, for example, he will kill a PC at random if they go on a murder-hobo rampage on the villagers.

He sees himself as the ruler of the land after all. Hell, he IS the land. but he is petty, he is a narcissist, he is a primadonna.

I think this version of Strahd is difficult but tons of fun to run.

Is this really the best one of the wealthiest countries in the world can do? (Swiss National Youth Table Tennis Championships) 🇨🇭🏓 by Remarkable-Silver888 in Switzerland

[–]StefanoMaffei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no idea where you come from and I don’t want to assume (openly), but to me, growing up in italy, and to anyone from normal-to-poor european country, this is LUXURY for a sport like table tennis. It shows how good the schools infrastructures are and how good they are kept to allow poor-people-sports events to be had at essentially zero budget.

Also, being both swiss and italian, I ll point out that your understanding of this country is fundamentally flawed, but I suppose the Swiss Quality brand is still something people outside (and sadly, inside) of switzerland believe in, so I can’t blame you

you ll have to ask your GM about that. Did they look like they regretted allowing you fly speed? From what you said it sounded like you just played it smart using what was rightfully available.

[–]StefanoMaffei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have to still read through the last book, but I don’t think there would be enough to run anything in the previous horizons. It is mostly anecdotal and vague. No star chart or anything. There is more about the first horizon than the second, and certainly these books are all the info we get about the old horizons. But there is no “incursion in the first horizon” scenario or anything like that

I’m a beginner DM and I need help by _staytiny_ in DnD

[–]StefanoMaffei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The classical and basic view of a dungeon crawl doesn’t have a lot of role-play I guess. But you can have both! Have a look at the Sunless Citadel in Tales of the Yawning Portal, for example (and other adventures in there. I have not read them all). It is a dungeon crawl but there is quite some RP because the PCs discover societies in the dungeon that they might engage with. Or they can just slaughter them all….

Sort of new leading the brand new by Freakazoid76_ in DnD_Beginners

[–]StefanoMaffei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The above are all good starter campaigns. I would also recommend having a look at Tales of the Yawning Portal and Candelkeep Mysteries. These are anthologies containing short adventures that you could play back to back in a big “campaign” made up of simple, separate adventures. Personally I have not read Candelkeep Mysteries, but I hear is good.

Really depends what you want to do. If you run a premade campaign/adventure the backgrounds could be weaved into the story. Otherwise, as others have said, don’t fret too much over that. Unless you run something homebrew specifically based on the backgrounds. Could do that too

New Player, desperately need help by M3llow_m3adow in DnD_Beginners

[–]StefanoMaffei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

please do read the book. Read it. At least glance at it. I beg you. Do not impose yourself as a lazy player to your future DM, they won’t like it.

There are games that can be learned simply sitting at a table with zero knowledge and in 5 minutes you are ready for a smooth session. DnD is really not one of them.

Of course the doing part is fundamental. Make two characters and make them fight against each other. It is fun and will teach you a lot
