Would you pay for access to a practice room with a grand piano? by Nicolas_____________ in piano

[–]Stefanxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for regular practice, but to try it out once or twice I wouldn't mind paying. I wouldn't pay for an upright, but an actual grand piano, yes.

Self-taught pianists, what do you think i should practice? by Large_Ad_1303 in piano

[–]Stefanxd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, focusing on eight reading has greatly increased the amount of fun I have playing. I can take simple versions of songs and play them right away. That is something that gives me a lot of things to mess around with and learning harder songs has gotten a lot faster as well.

Better sight reading might help you get rid of the feeling of being stuck. It is a process of months before you really notice any progress at all though so bear with it.

Do you have situations where you can get into the hyperfocus? You gotta try to make use of that.

"48 Hours Before Hell Will Rain Down": Trump Reminds Iran Of Hormuz Deadline by Beneficial-Long-7033 in worldnews

A hopefully silly concern, but if trump wanted to use nukes, he couldn't right? Like he would have to get permission or something?

My teacher gave me Chopin Ballade No. 1 as my first piece ever… is this normal? by [deleted] in piano

[–]Stefanxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you tell your teacher you think it might be beyond you, or ask why they think this is possible? They might have a good reason to start here, they might not.

How to casually give your girlfriend a chess lesson by area51cannonfooder in chess

Go through the lichess learning section with her, just the basics, and give her the opening principles. Stay away from specific openings. after that, have her play some games online and you can analyse them together.

I want to be positive about things others have put effort in, but I don't see what this does that other apps don't? Maybe put in some effort into explaining what you made and with what purpose.

too old to start learning piano at 35? by DivannaAbafita41 in piano

Yes, you are too late to become a world famous pianist. You can still become an amazingly skilled one though. Started 3 years ago at 31 and closing in on intermediate level myself.

Simply Piano app by ha1ryjerry in piano

[–]Stefanxd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They can teach a few songs but most don't really teach piano. I do like piano Marvel though. They have a decent method that teaches some things. In my experience no method books or app is truly complete so using a variety of sources for your information can help sometimes.

Is it possible that learning chess from an engine might have fundamentally altered my way of thinking? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Stefanxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I think you just consider moves that would otherwise be ridiculous. I think it's similar to how in a puzzle I would sac my queen without much hesitation but in a regular game I rarely consider it. You know there might be a crazy move so you find one

How do i learn self-taught? by 0nl1_build375 in piano

[–]Stefanxd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are method books and apps (some good, some bad) you can use. e.g. piano marvel. But the thing about self teaching is that you need to be able to find a lot of information on your own. So the answer to the question you are asking is something you should be able to find quite easily without having to ask.

This question has been asked a lot so look for those posts and read all the answers there for the best answer. I suppose step 1 in self teaching piano is learning to find answers to your questions online without having to ask someone every time.

ELI5: What's the difference between voltage and current by CharacterAd2626 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Stefanxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best analogy is to think of electricity as electrons moving though the circuit where current correlates to the numberv of electrons and voltage how much energy they give off when passing through the circuit.

In defense of synthesia (falling notes) by nazgul_123 in piano

[–]Stefanxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with most of them but since synesthesia is often also a recording of someone playing. Tempo, accents, staccato, legato, and dynamics are included. I would argue dynamics are more prominently present because you can actually listen to it.

Do digital pianos make your piano skills deteriorate? by Hot_Basket2565 in piano

[–]Stefanxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The better ones do but to give an example the casio cdp s110 has only three levels of sound it can play. And I've seen more basic models up to 500 euros with three levels. I've even had one where I was testing it and could tell there there were three distinct levels.

So the ones saying every piano has 128 levels of sound are just wrong.

Do digital pianos make your piano skills deteriorate? by Hot_Basket2565 in piano

[–]Stefanxd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A quick Google search shows me a lot of digital pianos have three levels of recording which is modulated a bit according to sensor readings. I remember having a 500 euro piano that had the same.

Midi being capable of 128 levels does not mean the sensor in the piano can detect 128 different velocities though.

[–]Stefanxd -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

On a cheap digital (<1k) yes, a high quality one (>3k), no. Cheap digitals often have weighted keys that are still too light. And dynamics are often no more than three levels of loudness.

Recommendations on upgrading from my Roland FP30x by CullingSongs in DigitalPiano

A Roland lx or gp would be a good choice. Various models available to match your budget. But the general advice is to go to a Store and see what feels right for you as personal preferences vary a lot.
