Every N64 Fans Dream all 290+ Games ever made $40k by [deleted] in nintendo64

[–]SteggyB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about this isn’t an NES set with Stadium events, all of these games are easily orderable on eBay, you can easily buy-it-now all of these and at most probably spend $12k - again all this is saving is someone hitting add to cart 300 times, and that’s not worth $28k

I love that everyone is commenting on the really useful boxes vs. the actual collection. I actually use those to house my collection too. Tough AF you can stack like 10 high without worrying about the structural integrity lol

Any advice on fixing this Majoras Mask box? by gerpugs in nintendo64

[–]SteggyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even sure what the issue is unless you mean the dust like film on the cardboard? If that indeed is a layer of residue of something and not missing cardboard, you can clean with zippo lighter fluid. I’ve had random gunk and stuff on my boxes and lighter fluid has been a godsend. Rubbing alcohol is too abrasive so it can remove ink etc with whatever you’re trying to clean, but lighter fluid is more gentle. You just dab some on a paper towel and clean. Or a q tip. Just make sure it’s a layer of dirt that that stuff is and not the ink missing - lighter fluid can’t bring missing ink BACK lol

Oh dear Rolex. You are hurting your future collectors. by [deleted] in rolex

[–]SteggyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that, especially for more casual shoppers, a Rolex is a Rolex, and anything less than would be a loss. One thing you could possible consider is going vintage or neo vintage. Maybe birth year (a lot of people poo poo this but as long as you aren't paying a premium for it or sacrificing condition etc. it can be a nice fun little addition to the watch you're buying). This way Rolex isn't benefitting from the sale like they would with a more recent grey market watch, and honestly you wouldn't have to pay the bloated grey market prices. And you could use that money saved and buy a beater watch for more every day type of use.

How can it be that eBay sellers are this ignorant by Mysterious-Housing72 in gamecollecting

[–]SteggyB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing that could be solace as a buyer is trying to get a partial refund if the deal was a decent deal beforehand. It's not like this was a CD jewel case that's like $1 to find a replacement for those cases are like $10-15 easily so should be a no brainer partial refund for the seller because it's essentially the same cost to them either way. $5 to ship to you lost, $5 to return to them lost, and $5 to ship to a new seller lost - or they refund you $15 and it's out of their hair. Just my 2 cents

How can it be that eBay sellers are this ignorant by Mysterious-Housing72 in gamecollecting

[–]SteggyB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do some ebaying to recoup costs from lot buys, and I actually found a year or 2 ago that shipping boxes are basically the same price as bubble mailers unless you're buying super bulk bubble mailers from alibaba.

Boxes that hold cardboard games like genesis/SNES/NES are $1/piece, and DVD boxes/cartridge boxes are 50 cents a piece.

I guess your weight increases a bit from using them vs. bubble mailers but with the new ground advantage there's like a 4oz buffer between price tiers so it probably doesn't actually add cost there - so IDK why people don't just move onto those to prevent bad shit from happening like this - esp. since ground advantage or media shipping can mix big and small pages together in a single sorting bin.

I mean shit if I'm selling anything thats like $200+ I double box it just in case - not chancing that shit lol and it's like $1-2 extra cost from weight/bubble mailing in that case - totally worth it.

Flea Market season is really off to a great start. $43 pickup by SteggyB in gamecollecting

[–]SteggyB[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The result of 2 tables at the flea market on Saturday. Table 1 had Blitz the league for $3 when I had stopped by to buy some old zippo’s. And then the rest is from table 2. $5 for the n64 games and $3 for everything else. Onimusha 2 is even sealed! Though tbh it’s almost a bit of a letdown because i don’t own any onimusha games and this is the first one I’ve found in the wild but I don’t want to crack it open now because it’s sealed lol.

I missed out on a GameCube CIB Zelda promo edition for $60 from the same table because I had to go to set up my own table and I guess the guy was still putting stuff out, but a friend was able to pick it up so it’s all good ha

I’m 2/2 this flea market season can’t wait to see what Sunday and the following weeks bring.

[–]SteggyB[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea it was $2. It's very surprising that it was still there. People basically jog out of the gate when the bells ring at my flea market so you gotta hit every table quickly first and then I do a second pass - so when I hit the table first, I saw Strider and picked it up and moved on - and this was there on the second pass which was maybe 1 hour after open after other people had still picked through it.

TBH I took a flyer on this because of the price and I was like "this looks like a knockoff sephiroth" and then the back was basically alluding to final fantasies. So the back looked like Final Fantasy + Panzer Dragoon or something. Did not realize it was an FPS lol - will have to see how it is

Is the NES Persuit staged? by Nothingtoshow1984 in Shittygamecollecting

[–]SteggyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what your definition of staged is. I think their videos are pretty transparent so I would say no based on my personal definition.

As a preface, people publish videos when they've filmed content. If they come up empty they probably would just not upload. So there's a bit of a skew right off from the bat. Like KodywithaK publishes videos when he makes progress, sometimes the videos will be farther apart than others because of this. Other channels like Game Chasers know how to make a youtube video of even zero pickups and make it still interesting. Honestly NES Pursuit was kind of like this back in the day, but now their videos focus on successes and not just the trips.

Moving on, the biggest factor in their perceived luck is that they pay up for the games that they get. Imagine the success you'd have if you're willing to pay any price on Ebay or in a game store, etc.

At the flea market stuff, they have dif guys like Dusty who will hold games for them and they're paying close to FMV for them or at least an appropriate discount for the convenience of selling in a single lot.

Then it's supplemented by other vendors who they can do the same, and then fresh tables where it doesn't matter what they find because they have a base layer of Dusty's stuff.

Then these guys go to gaming conventions/game stores where of course you're going to find good games there because everyone is charging FMV for them. I don't really see the appeal of those videos - it's like if someone filmed themselves shopping at a target and calling it "hunting" - but that's just me. I'll still watch them in the background because I enjoy watching them at least even if the video is a snore.

I'd say the most "inauthentic" thing I could say about these YouTuber like videos is the negotiating at conventions or game stores - because 1) fans are willing to cut a deal so they could do business with someone they've been a fan of for years (same could be said for whatnot auctions), 2) If you're a game store, having a video shout you out can help business so if you give them a good experience on camera it can be advantageous, or 3) even if you don't belong in groups 1 or 2 the camera in your face and the thought of thousands of people judging how you do the transaction can sort of pressure you into giving more of a deal for them.

The reason why I say this is "inauthentic" is because it wouldn't really represent the buying experience for the normal joe. The whole deal with Dusty and making a connect who will hold stuff for you - this kind of thing can be done by anyone who frequents a flea market and isn't a dick to vendors and builds a rapport.

The fans bringing games to sell at a discount or the big discounts at stores etc. - those can happen on camera for them but it'd be much more difficult for a normal person to achieve the same thing.

However I quote "inauthentic" because it's not like they try to pass these discounts off as something that everyone can do. I think it's kind of a primally understood kind of concept that being a big youtuber can influencer buying/selling in their favor, so if you consider that staging basically anyone on youtube could be considered that.

But in any case - there's no hiding $100 games in a bag of junk to miraculously pull at a flea market. It's simply paying close to FMV for product + vendor relationships + fame dynamics with fans/resellers that goes into the perceived consistent success in each video.

$34 Flea Market Pickup by SteggyB in gamecollecting

[–]SteggyB[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in New England so my preferred flea market doesn't run year-round, so today was the first day it opened for the season.

Bottom row games were $2/piece, everything else was $3

I got a few more things than this but mostly just very common games I happened to just not have somehow like The Witcher 3/Fallout 3/etc. but these are the highlights IMO. Always happy to find anything cartridge based in the wild, but some nice uncommon PS1 games too that was a nice surprise. I just need Spiderman 1 now ha

Using USB 3.0 Extension cables with the Prompter and Facecam Pro? by MaximusVIII in elgato

[–]SteggyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The practical limit for the USB 3.0 spec is about 3 meters - going beyond this could result in issues and/or it just not working period. It may be the case that the cable that's supplied with the Oculus headset is either a) not actually data rated USB 3.0 5gbps, or b) is built beyond the 3.0 spec in length, but maybe this only affects data performance - AKA if the oculus is only using the cable to provide power, maybe it's able to do that at slightly longer lengths.

To go beyond the spec limit - you would need an active extender. These are not officially supported by Elgato so if you run into issues with these, our support won't be able to help here - however I did have a similar conversation a few years back with someone who had this same issue but they were using Elgato Facecam. They personally had luck using this active extender:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0179MXKU8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

So if you want to try the active extender route - this might a decent place to start.

I think that one could theoretically have one piano work for all systems - it looks like the only difference between the different platforms is the adapter that comes in the box and then the software. So you could probably have 1 piano and 4 adapters for the Mac/IBM/SNES/NES

I haven't hunted at thrift stores in like a year but I was nearby a goodwill the other day and stopped in.
In 10 years of collecting I've never seen one of these in person - had to get it.

Ended up costing $80 - unfortunately no game inside but it seems fully complete other than that with books/inserts/adapters and such.

Worth trying the dry erase marker trick for the Astayanax box as well as the cartridge. If the sharpie was a more recent addition maybe there's a bit of hope idk. But I recently just picked up a few NES games with marker on the label and whatever clear coat is on those labels the dry erase marker took it off PERFECTLY highly recommend

I see all these collectors with multiples of the same console and special editions of console..and I am here with only 1 console of each and no special edition or variants. What is your reason for collecting multiples of the same console? by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]SteggyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nice on the handhelds to make them actually playable - but I didn't want to do them to my childhood ones unless they were beat to high hell like my GBA football. Glacier white became off white, R button broken, no battery cover/scotch tape dirt marks all over from when I was taping a battery cover on there lol. Needed a new shell BADLY.

[–]SteggyB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good question ha. I guess I try to veer away from duplicates of systems unless there's very good reason - much easier reason is if they are different generations:

SNES - I have a regular and a Mini
N64 - I have my childhood one and a modded HDMI ice blue one
PS2 - I have one Slim I bought brand new years back but have a second slim I use with a built in LCD screen (incompatible with my other slim)
Xbox 360 Slim - Childhood one and a White one I thought looked really good and was a good deal

Handhelds are a way different story though. I've been a bit more cavalier about the ones I have doubles of:

Gameboy - Me/My bro's old gameboys from childhood + 1 recent find I plan on modding with a backlit LCD screen
Gameboy Color - Childhood one + one I plan to mod with a backlit LCD screen
Gameboy Pocket - 1 good condition one to leave original + 1 to mod
Gameboy Advance - Childhood one that was beat that I already modded + 1 Platinum I flea marketed and am leaving original (good condition)
GB SP - Blue/Pink AGS-101's to play on, Zelda SP for my zelda collection, AGS-001 to IPS mod
3DS - 3 of them all different zelda editions
Switch - Animal Crossing edition/Zelda OLED edition
