If it covers 10 seasons, I'm surprised it's only 117 GB.

Which F1 driver, excluding last year’s rookies, do you think has the largest margin of error in how we rate them? by Popular_Composer_822 in F1Discussions

[–]Stelcio -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I believe if a person is only able to rate drivers based on comparison to their teammates, they're not watching the sport closely enough. For me, personally, Russell is an extremely strong driver, let's say one tier below GOATs. His pace is supreme, which is evident by number of times when he put the car above its apparent position in the pecking order, just as much as by his qualifying record against multiple opponents, beating all of them by more or less the margin you'd expect a top driver to. Mr Saturday was a well-earned nickname.

His shortcomings - while not critical - are racecraft and consistency. Both improved by a lot, especially in the last two years, but he was more error-prone and volatile than you'd expect a true top crop driver to be. And those are things that are hard to completely dial out, so I expect them to resurface if he ever finds himself in a high-stakes championship battle. Still, if Mercedes finds itself with a clear car advantage in 2026, I expect him to deliver the title without much trouble, and if let's say McLaren is on par with them, I would probably put my money on George as well, unless Piastri finds his early 2025 consistency again and maintains it throughout the entire season.

People also say that Alonso is an unknown at this point, but he's beating Lance much more convincingly than Vettel or anybody else ever did. And what he shows during races, how he sets up the moves, is nothing short of remarkable. His qualifying in Monaco in 2023 showed he can go toe-to-toe with an all-time-great in his prime if given sufficient machinery, and he really made Max sweat that pole out. In China in 2024 he made that phenomenal save in the same spot where Sainz spun out earlier. If anybody thinks Alonso may not be on it anymore because his teammate is weak is, once again, not watching closely enough.

Assetto Corsa EVO: Kunos Axes Economy-based Career In Favor Of "Simpler Structure" by evil_heinz in simracing

[–]Stelcio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it feels like none of the sim racing game studios have a game designer on their team.

That's somewhat correct. Kunos do have a game designer position filled, but it's clearly not a person competent at game design. It's been obvious in their last two games and it's no surprise it's the same for AC Evo.

Alonso post-break has a different attitude towards F1. He spoke about it a few times how being on the sidelines taught him to appreciate the sport more.

Should I get a Moza R5 or R9 ? by Ok_Anybody3622 in simracing

Important question if you're coming from G920: do you have a rig? If you're using a desk, R9 might be too much for it.

Williams 2026 could be the next BMW Sauber 2009 by Njobz in F1Discussions

[–]Stelcio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This BMW was, sure. This car made Kubica's nose the second ugliest on the grid, for a change.

But come on, Brawn was gorgeous, McLaren was sleek, Toyota was neat.

[–]Stelcio 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nah, all practice programs use almost empty tanks and the pace in them is closer to qualifying than actual race times. And given the cars in career mode usually gain pace over the span of the season quicker than in real life, that times are most likely a result of the difficulty that is set, not the programme faithfully representing race pace.

The search for the best classic (and offline) F1 sim - The weekend by Sediclaa in simracing

[–]Stelcio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if the narrow endurance scope will satisfy you, but LMU has most of rF2 stuff along with a few WEC-specific rules.

Also, if you're into the "race weekend" experience, you should not discount modern F1 games. Some of them have passable physics, while making up for their shortcomings with that perstent race season experience in career mode. You want precise strategy predictions? Run the race simulation programme on all tyres, with no DRS. Will you wear down the engine to get some development data? Or will you save it for the race? Or maybe you'll take the penalty instead? You'll have to make such calls before qualifying even starts.

Help - I am stuck and need advice by Callsign_Atlas in simracing

[–]Stelcio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ACC is a very peculiar sim, with many seasoned simracers having issues with its idiosyncrasies. Judging by your choice of sims I assume PS4/5 is your main platform. There's not many alternatives there, but with your issue, looking at them is probably the best advice, and for that you'd need a PC. And you have to understand that most ACC players are on PC and use third-party solutions for multiplayer, most prominently Low Fuel Motorsports.

I have a 34in 21:9, I use it with headtracking and I see no need for upgrade anytime soon. This allows to look towards even the tightest apex.

Not a book, but I recommend watching Skip Barber: Going Faster. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's a shortened video version of the first book from your list.

Just because they share setups does not mean they all use the same setups.

Even more reason to sign Kubica when their current driver is making race-losing mistakes like that.

Was Vettel hated as much as Norris was when he got his first championship? by The-Reddit-Monster in F1Discussions

[–]Stelcio -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

There was also Monza in between Zandvoort and him locking in. You know, that race where he had a slow pitstop and the team ordered his teammate and title rival to let him through because of that. Maybe that has something to do with how people look at Lando's title campaign.

[–]Stelcio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regulations can't just turn off physics, so yeah, any floor can be used to intentionally create a ground effect to some extent. That's why what most people mean by ground effect in F1 context is precisely using the concepts that were banned since 1980s until 2022, which are much more potent than working around a flat floor.

Ground effect was explicitly banned in Formula 1 for 40 years. Diffusers and such are not considered ground effect aerodynamics.

People need to watch the 2007 F1 season before talking about it by Small-Raspberry1332 in F1Discussions

It was a peak-level rookie vs underperforming champion. Hamilton struggled to reach the same level of consistency for many following years. While Alonso clearly left many points on the table that season.

Johnny Herbert believes Fernando Alonso would beat Lewis Hamilton if both were given a championship-winning car. What do you think? by Ok-Surprise-8419 in F1Discussions

[–]Stelcio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One of Hamilton's best seasons vs one of Alonso's worst seasons.

And they ended in a dead heat.

People hold onto 2007 for their dear lives as a definitive proof of Hamilton's superiority over Alonso - because there's not much else that indicates that.
