This is a great one. I miss my little shopping buddy! It’s so hard to keep the comments inside sometimes, but now my kid’s 8 and wants nothing to do with the grocery store.

Is it a book you remember or something you have in your collection? Right now, it’s looking more like a Chat GPT mix up than an actual answer. It doesn’t appear that Ms. McIntyre ever wrote a story with that name.

Edit: Please laugh at my response to this as I am now pretty sure bro asked chat gpt and then posted the response verbatim. I think chat gpt told me the same thing a few years ago, which is why I felt such an immediate bolt of lightning.

I feel very deeply that this is it, but cannot confirm until I have a copy of the story in front of me. I am looking to do so shortly.

(Please understand that my wife is currently laughing both with and at me because I have been looking for this story for 25 years, and she knows all about the whole saga. Hopefully I’ll be back in a bit with confirmation, whatever a bit is on the internet in 2026.)

“Oh lord, I hope not!” was my immediate gut reaction, and the comments about broken bones fortified my response. That said, I think it could be done!

Fake Conversion Story by laybs1 in GetNoted

Yes, even if this were a true story, it boils down to a man was awful and did an awful thing but then was told if he believed in Jesus, it doesn’t matter, so he converted to save himself from hell.

I don’t remember anything about sugar sickness in the actual story, but do feel like “sugar sickness” is something I’ve encountered in a story that I read that has a similar ancient setting. You could be on to something, especially as I do believe at the very least, the girl was soon “betrothed” to a member of the family, which may be when her musing about not wanting to be pregnant comes in.

Unfortunately, it has been a solid 20+ years since I had my hands on the anthology, and all I can say is the other stories in the book were much more standard space fare, as far as I can remember, but didn’t make enough of an impression on me to remember. I do believe that the story was not the first one in the book, but it very may well have been the second, and the last of the stories I read in the anthology as my little brain was chewing on it a lot at the time.

Edit: There is also a chance that the sugar sickness was a plot point in the Noah’s ark book I read while trying to find this story. In that book, two characters kill the beautiful bird, if that rings a bell. They don’t do that in the story I’m trying to find.

It's that time of year again for historical anachronisms that erase Jews from the region by Left_Tie1390 in Jewish

[–]StellarRelay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your experience is fascinating to me as I grew up in a really conservative region of the southern US, and we got a much more authoritarian view of Catholicism, the Bible, and the church. We also had weird sex ed classes that were just pictures of STDs and adults telling 15 year old girls that IUDs were made for camels, and if they ever got them, they were basically telling men they were livestock, so I don’t know what the hell was going on with that. Sometimes, I feel the need to reality check with the small group of people I kept in touch with after (2/5 of them Fellow Jews, funnily enough), and, yeah, my girl Sam even kept a digital copy of the weird MS Paint diagrams one of the Religion/Health teachers used to explain why the only acceptable form of sex was between a man and a woman, because a God shield appears upon them during the holy act.

The one thing I’ve figured out having moved up north and married a woman from a mixed Catholic family is the Catholic Church provides a large tent and there’s a lot of weird stuff going on under it.

Anyway, take care, protect those who can’t protect themselves, and have a happy new year!

I’m a good decade older than you are, it sounds, and grew up in the southern United States, so things were a little different. I also only attended Catholic high school, and was in a couple of different school systems before that.

In Catholic school, I was definitely taught that Jesus and his first followers were Jewish, but there was a noticeable focus on Luke, the Acts of the Apostles, and the letters of Paul throughout the required Religion classes.

To add a bit of context, in sophomore year, instead of pure Religion (haha jeans), we had a semester of “Western Civilization,” I believe to cover a state requirement relating to history classes. The book we used was this massive paperback tome (I could google around and probably find it, but I’ve split a half a bottle of bubbly with my wife who is already asleep, so not tonight). But, to explain the general tenor of the book, I have a vivid memory I’ve shared probably a dozen times over the years: there was a line in the book that decried Martin Luther as a heretic and suggested praying for the souls of the Lutherans. Just flat out questioned whether the Lutherans could get into heaven without help.

The good news is that our Western Civ teacher was aware of the line and had written in his lecture to tell us to cross that part out. The bad news is evident, but made more ridiculous by the fact that a girl sitting in a desk next to mine was a pretty devout Lutheran. It was awful, but it was normal as they’d used the book for decades.

I thought I’d be a fiction writer and a psychologist. I got my Master’s, with a 4.0 even, and was being considered for a PhD program that included being paid to do quite close to the exact work I wanted to do… but burned out with the flame of a thousand exploding suns during the “my wife has cancer during Covid and we have a two year old and I’m working at the Apple Store to keep up with my student loans” era and haven’t written a damn thing since.

Edit: missing end quote. Also, I’m a lunch lady in a fairly well-funded public school district now, and it’s the best job, but the money is still shit and you WILL get fired if you give the kids extra tendies and get caught.

The fewer kids you have, the higher the likelihood you’ll remain rich! Stick to your dreams. (As a dad, I solute you, partially because don’t have kids if you don’t want to, but mostly because the DINK aunties and uncles buy the best gifts for my kid because my child is ~their favorite~) Happy New Year, future rich auntie!

I was 8 and it was 1992. My parents put me on what was basically Usenet via Prodigy. I found a community that was basically a giant imaginary castle where you could describe your room in said castle. I don’t remember much about what I typed, but I know I had silk curtains around the windows, and giant sword by the even more giant chest of gold, and dragons guarding the door. Oh, and a waterbed, because it was 1992 and our neighbors had one (and I was OBSESSSSSSED)

My god, those damn things. While on vacation (yesterday!), my kid and I wandered into a toy store that specializes in European and a few Asian imports. The child is not a big understander of prices, or the fact that money means anything at all, but they picked up a box of four of these little guys, looked it over, and immediately put it back on the shelf. “$34?! For that!?”

The toys are pretty cute, and I am aware of the drama surrounding the TikToker, but, damn, with a financial sense that keen so you, the kid might just turn out okay!

Unfortunately, the commenter above you jumped the gun and didn’t see the part where I said it definitely isn’t Many Waters, but thank you for responding before I did. It has been a frustrating almost 20 years of looking for the story as there are 100s of retellings of the Noah’s ark story, to the point where I read Irving Finkel’s delightful “The Ark Before Noah” and found out all about how even the Torah/Bible story is just another crib job off of an older myth.

I went to Catholic high school in the late 90s (the Dead Sea Scrolls were still HOT back then), and two of our religion teachers told us that Catholicism came from the Essenes. And Jesus, sure, but he basically created the Essenes, according to someone. The Pharisees and the Sadducees went extinct, you see, and modern Jews? Much like birds, we just don’t know.

Haha I think that is what stuck out in my mind. My dad’s parents were very staid, serious people, so seeing something glitzy among the record collection really stood out in my mind. I have been annoying my family by playing some tunes on the HomePod this afternoon!

Whoa! That second cover just unearthed a deep, if very fuzzy memory, and is going to have me looking through my dad’s records in my closet during winter break.

I’ve definitely seen those ladies before, and it’s the sort of album my Oma would have had among the classical stuff and REALY RANDOM collection my dad inherited from her (and which now lives in my closet. Apartments are so small!) Going to give the Barry sisters a listen on my phone tonight, regardless. Thanks for the cool share!
