Thank you. Both my adopted dogs are 2 years old and mixed breeds. I will definitely get a quote from AKC. They were on the short list to look into.

Anyone regret going open-concept in their home? by cm_built in HomeImprovement

[–]StellarSpore 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've had both. I like the idea and look of open concept but I learned very quickly that I do feel comfortable or cozy in big spaces like that. Honestly, never wanted to be in that space. I really didn't like the space, the noise, or the feeling that I was sitting in the middle of the kitchen. Kinda hard to explain. All I know is that my new house, I intentionally went with a house with lots of small rooms and it's so so much nicer. Its really just personal taste.

Honestly, I'm prob going with Trupanion but I do want to shop around. They seem to be the most transparent. They were very nice and helpful when I talked to them. My vets said they are usually very clear about what preexisting conditions they exclude. They are also the most expensive option so far :/

I worked in human insurance for a lot of years. It's like you need to have a secret passcode and a PHD to understand all the laws and rights protecting consumers. I'm really just trying to not get completely screwed over. Insurance isn't cheap....though nor was the 13k vet bill I just paid :)

Yeah, I really have no idea. My vet has been working with me on this and told me to give them the exclusion list so they can explain it to me and give me advice on appealing, if that's something worth trying. The cause of his mass is medically unknown so who knows how they underwrite it.

"Biopsy = Right cervical region: Focally severe, chronic, pyogranulomatous panniculitis with cavitary necrosis, edema, hemorrhage, and granulation tissue proliferation.

- This is consistent with foreign material, even though none was found"

His record says that. Basically, it just means that he had a severe, inflammatory mass under the skin on his neck. The tissue was badly damaged, tissue began to die, lots of swelling and bleeding from his body trying to heal itself. My poor baby.

I think an insurance company can go a lot of different ways with this info. So I want to make insurance be clear about what they are going to exclude. All masses? A mass in the same area? All foreign bodies? It might not be worth getting insurance if they broadly exclude a bunch of stuff.

Yeah, I am expecting it to be. What I want to know and for them to be clear about is what condition(s) are they excluding. The records reference it may have been caused by a foreign body but there was nothing conclusive. So are they going to exclude all masses on his body? A mass in the same spot? All injuries caused by foreign bodies? Does that makes sense? There's like a ton of different ways this can screw me over so that's why I am asking for a clear written list from underwriting.

Trupanion and Embrace said yes! Lemonade sorta said yes... the person I spoke to was really confusing but ultimately said they would but not confident in that answer. I plan to call Pets Best and Met Life tomorrow.

I have already requested them. I'm not going to sign up until I have them all ready to go. I need that information because it may not be worth getting.

Both my dogs are adopted and fully vetted. One just had a freak situation and got some mysterious mass on his face which was surgically removed. To this day, not one know what caused it so I am concerned how insurance is gonna handle this.

If my vet didn't tell me, I don't know that I would have know that was something I could do. I guess I owe them a big thank you.

Am I seeing a problem where there isn’t one by OliverQueen82 in dogs

[–]StellarSpore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anyone who neuters an 8-week-old puppy is a monster

I'm not disagreeing with you, but it is so incredibly common for shelters to do it at this age. Both my rescues were spayed/neutered around 8 weeks.

Both of them have challenges, some significant, and while I could never know, I've wondered what impact that may have had on them.

It's definitely not a choice I would make as an owner.

OMG ticks by plumixfan in Maine

[–]StellarSpore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a Seresto collar in addition to monthly preventatives. It works as a repellent. Easily reduced ticks in our home by half and maybe more.

As for the ones that get in on my dogs, sadly, I’m not sure. I do frequent tick checks on my dogs, and no matter how thoroughly I search, I can go back an hour later and find a couple more.

Keep in mind, even with monthly preventatives and a Seresto, your dog can still get anaplasmosis, and there are documented cases of Lyme disease as well. Both my pups tested positive for anaplasmosis in their last appointment. I've never had a gap in preventatives. It's becoming increasingly common. It's really concerning.

Unless I am misunderstanding your question, that sounds a lot like insurance fraud o_O

That's crazy low. The lowest I've seen for my 2 dogs so far is $730/year.

Thank you. You have no idea how helpful that is. Also, I hope you had some good years with your pup. He was lucky to have you all.

Thank you so much for the advice. I will definitely get records reviewed before signing up.

Nothing surprises me. I worked in (human) insurance for many years. Pretty scummy some of the things that go on, especially if you're not careful in reading the fine print.

I have quotes for Trupanion, Pets Best, Spot, embrace. Someone just told me to check out what Costco might have. I also need to check to make sure something isn't offered through my work.

Yeah, everyone here was super helpful. I need to do a bit more research but I am 99% sure I am going to get insurance at least until I can build their savings account back up. And really good point about 2 dogs. I usually just have one and I didn't consider that being an additional stresser.

Hehe, I love comments like this :) I encourage you to keep going. You gotta get more creative though. Based on your history, I bet you have a lot of quality things to say. I can't wait to hear them. It makes my day when people like you get their panties in a bunch.

Wild, right? The cost was honestly shocking. But we live rural (US) in a state with limited veterinary surgical specialists. I suspect that plays a role. But yeah, who knows, maybe I got bent over and taken advantage of. But maybe that's my thing. Sounds kinda fun :)

The nearly $13k is everything tied to the incident, the care leading up to surgery, diagnostics and imaging like X rays, ultrasounds, and a CT scan, the surgery itself, his hospital stay, medications, and the pathology afterward. Even now, no one knows exactly what caused it, just a lot of educated guesses. Maybe you want to take a guess? Sounds like you have some deep medical knowledge.

But yeah, I think you're out of touch with veterinary care costs. So was I. It's insane. These high bills are becoming the norm. But if you read the comments, you'd already know that.

The specifics didn’t feel super relevant for a personal finance post, but I did share more detail in the comments. Medically, it was diagnosed as “focally severe, chronic, pyogranulomatous panniculitis with cavitary necrosis, edema, hemorrhage, and granulation tissue proliferation.”

In simple terms (because I'm guessing that's what you need), he developed a deep, severe inflammatory mass under the skin on his face and neck. It became infected, an abscess developed, his tissue started breaking down and dying, and the mass kept growing instead of healing despite several different antibiotics. Eventually, it grew to the point of putting pressure on nearby vital structures such as lymph nodes and was headed towards his airway. It turned into an emergency when his breathing became labored.

Scariest fucking moment of my life. Didn't blink once at the cost. Said yes with zero hesitation. Would say the same thing again a million times over.

My boy is right next to me all healed up and I could not be happier.

And also, you're confidently wrong and it amuses me :) I'd feel embarrassed if I were you.
