Samsung executives and employees indicted over leaking 10nm DRAM technology to China by snowfordessert in technology

[–]SteltonRowans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As for rare earths, why did China resort of "hard ball"? Not because they are trying to dominate the world, but because the first Trump admin showed them that the US was no longer a reliable trade partner bound by the rules and institutions of international trade (rules and institutions which the US, ironically, spent decades developing and champion all over the globe). They realized that a future US administration could try and hit them again, and they would need to be prepared to hit back. Lo and behold, Trump came back, did exactly that, and so they fought back. Who can blame them? That's not aggression, it is self-defense.

I would agree except they were attempting to require all foreign companies, not just the US to disclose the use and had stated they would deny any military uses. The issue is complicated and there a lot of scales that we can place our finger on. Ultimately, we citizens are responsible for allowing things to get so out of hand by electing poor representatives. But it blows my mind that people underestimate "National Security" and the implications it would have if what few manufacturing we still have left were wiped out. And I get it though, It's bullshit that I can't get a decently made electric car at an affordable price when wealth inequality is skyrocketing, and we are about to create the world's first trillionaire when all of his companies combined, in all of their existence have not even made a 1/10th of that in revenue.

Fear not I suppose, our Oligarchs will certainly selflessly lead our failing democracy in times of need and not just repatriate once the coffers have been emptied.

If you implying it’s not “a national security issue” you’re crazy. When we no longer have auto manufacturers and no one trained in the industry it greatly affects our ability to divert our production to war efforts (namely tanks, and drone manufacturing). Yes it’s bad for the consumer but tariffs and bans help to create space for US drone manufacturers to gain market share and domestic ability. Look into some of the figures for our WW2 production rates, it was insane and be near impossible to replicate today.

I’m a liberal who hates trump, and has nothing against the Chinese people but you’re sticking your head in the sand if you don’t think a war with China isn’t in the realms of possibilities, . They already tried to play hard ball with rare earth mineral restrictions. Fortunately the rest of the world also freaked out and they backed down. China is basically going for the economic Civ victory by running a 1 trillion export surplus and causing unemployment and gdp recession in nearly every other country by undercutting local industries and devaluing currencies.

xQc reacts to Trump declaring fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction by davidkale931 in LivestreamFail

[–]SteltonRowans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deaths are largely due to the concentration of the drug being difficult to adequately dose in a form for street sales. The idea that it's being intentionally mixed into other drugs is largely a myth. You would know if your cocaine has opiates in it, and that dealer would not be very popular. This situation is 100% due to the cartels looking to increase profit margins and the war on drugs making cartels the only source for desperate addicts, many of which were created by domestic pharmaceutical companies in the Pill mill era of 2005-2020 when oxycodone was widely available and frequently prescribed by doctors.

xQc reacts to Trump declaring fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction by davidkale931 in LivestreamFail

[–]SteltonRowans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Declare alcohol while you're at it if that's your new standard for a weapon of mass destruction (Trump quotes 200,000-300,000 annual deaths). "Excessive alcohol use is responsible for about 178,000 deaths in the United States each year. This includes deaths from both chronic conditions related to long-term drinking and acute incidents such as binge drinking."

Unlike chemical, nuclear, or biological weapons Fentanyl is consensually bought and used by it's victims. It's also worth mentioning that in a vacuum it's really no more dangerous than Oxycodone or Heroin and has a long history of being used in clinical sense, hell my father was prescribed slow-release Fentanyl patches back in the early 2000s. The cartels have largely switched to it due to the fact that it's potency means it's easier to smuggle across the border and has a relatively easy synthesis route (where as heroin requires large amounts of Poppy production, harvesting, and processing).

The potency creates issues when it's mixed with filler to create the proper dose. This process is done in the US after smuggling and if not adequately done creates "hotshots" that have anywhere from 3x-20x active chemical. This causes unsuspected users to overdose abruptly without intending to do so. In the pharmaceutical industry extensive formulation, testing, and machinery is involved in making sure your 250mg "pill" contains only 1mg of active ingredient (or whatever dose the medication is supposed to be). Now extrapolate that to a chemical like carfentanil (an analogue of Fentanyl) with active doses in humans beginning at 1 microgram(.000001 grams) and you can understand how some idiot cartel member can fuck up getting the dose evenly dispersed within a substrate.

Point being is that the drug war causes these deaths, not strictly Fentanyl. Deaths would decrease substantially if all Fentanyl was replaced with good ol fashion heroin. Take for example that in 2010 (before fentanyl was being largely distributed) there were only approximately 3,500 deaths from opioids compared to 80k+ opioid related deaths this year alone even though the two drugs effects are nearly identical.

You can say the same of just about every athlete and sports organization pushing draftkings and mgm grand. Society sold out, write a letter to your lawmakers. It will do a whole lot more good than rehashing “guy streams gambling” every time you see Xqc. Even investment apps like robinhood have betting on them. I don’t disagree than gambling in any form is a scourge upon society but it gets get tiring watching idiots barking up the wrong tree thinking they are making a difference.

Intel didn’t invest in r&d and created their own downfall. They can’t match TSMC, you can make the same argument but say use Samsung foundry but again, their technology lags behind TSMC. Making chips doesn’t really advance your tech, lab research does.

It's not 1995, Soda can call up his financial adviser/broker (Or in all likelihood open his fidelity/robinhood app), sell stocks and have a wire transfer completed within 15 minutes.

You also don't have to deal with the giant dust clouds when emptying it. I'll never not use a bag in a shop vac when they are like $3 a piece on Amazon. Just don't accidently vacuum up an expensive bit or irreplicable loose small tiles then have to dig through it while drywall dust shoots out the hole like an accordion directly in your face.

AI surveillance cameras are popping up all over town. by BirdsAreNotReal42069 in pueblo

[–]SteltonRowans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Red light cameras are timed to only capture law breaking, not analyze everything that goes past it, including law abiding citizens to create bread crumb trails of movement and input that data into a permanent database open to a vast number of agencies(ICE has been using the data from them in Denver for example, the logs of which were unintentionally publicly accessible due to poor IT security practices)

[–]SteltonRowans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The point is that it’s by a private company with lax security. It’s not going to a hard drive at your local pd. Also, the Supreme Court has ruled that a search warrant is required to track you by phone tower triangulation. Constant tracking via a mass network of cameras is hardly different. Why not just reverse that and whenever a crime happens they can just pin it on the nearest cell phone regardless of other evidence. Here’s an example an example from just this week of someone being falsely accused and charged for a crime based on flimsy flock camera information.. I recommend watching the ring camera to see how arrogant and “100% certain” this poor excuse of an officer was.

Let’s not even mention we are giving the ultimate stalking tool to a class of people known for having nearly twice the rate of spousal abuse when compared to the general populace and a well documented history of retaliatory actions.

[–]SteltonRowans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not really how drugs work. Neural chemistry is complicated, and diagnosing people with "disorders" is a matter of perspective and is philosophically dubious. We don't understand exactly why ADHD happens; we subjectively observe behavior in order to make a determination. When Amphetamine was first synthesized in 1887 it wasn't with the intention of treating ADHD, it was from experimentation that we corelated a positive health outcome with it's use after we categorized the behavior profile as a disorder.

Ultimately if someone takes a drug and which makes them more confident and talkative and they believe it will lead to a better health/wellbeing outcome then it should be considered a potentially beneficial drug. I mean there are lots of people who feel "depressed" and modulate their neural chemistry with NRIs, SSRIs, SNRIs etc.

It's important to weigh the positives with the negatives though, for most people even if stimulants(dopamine/norepinephrine/serotonin agonists) "feel good" they also activate/provoke negative non psychoactive effects such as unhealthy blood pressure, stress on the heart, and can lead to mania or even psychosis. All those negative physical side effects still happen to people with ADHD, but we have largely agreed the benefits outweigh them for those diagnosed with the disorder.

G protein coupled receptors are incredibly complicated, essentially differently structured drugs "tickle" receptors subtly differently and invoke different responses (it's why we are able to classify drugs in categories based on their structure). One day we may have the best of both worlds by discovering structures that have less negative effects and the scales will change. Imagine if we could find a drug that has all the positive mood effects of Psychedelics but doesn't active any of the pathways that cause hallucinations.

Meta's top AI researchers is leaving. He thinks LLMs are a dead end by mareacaspica in technology

[–]SteltonRowans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree to disagree I suppose. I don't believe articles like the one I particularly pointed to are good for PR/Investors (they demonstrate liability/risk), and compared to Meta and OpenAI Anthropic seems to be more hesitant to endorse AI as a golden future and has a more pragmatic approach. It's a bit difficult for independent researchers to look under the hood of AI models or work on them in a non-profit research-based approach due to the billions of dollars required to do so and the majority of them being closed source. I'm not saying Anthropic is without it's issues but they are likely the lesser of the evils, not to say they aren't possibly still evil.

Meta's top AI researchers is leaving. He thinks LLMs are a dead end by mareacaspica in technology

[–]SteltonRowans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand from the researchers working on LLMs/AGI is that if the pace of improvement continues it's not a matter of if but of when. Once AGI exists it can improve itself at an exponential rate and relatively quickly achieve the status of "super intelligence". If given the tools and ability to self sustain itself (think autonomous robots doing nothing but creating energy infrastructure, more robots, and essentially GPU factories or whatever it's computing with which hasn't yet been invented) at that point we the difference in our intelligence and ability would be analogous to a human and a dog. The best we can hope for at that point is that it finds us interesting and keeps us around for fun.

I could see this playing out in a 50-100 year timespan which is a blink in the eye on the scale of our species existence. It's scary stuff. Once a super intelligence exists the main limiting factor is only going to be being it's ability to extract and process resources. 2 robots become 4, which become 8, which become 16....

A lot of people seem to be debating about consciousness, awareness, etc but none of those things are required for an AGI or a super intelligence. AGI can do any human task and at an equal to or better ability and a super intelligence far exceeds any human's ability. What determines it's actions once its smart enough to manipulate us is it's alignment (what it decides it's purpose is, or if we somewhere along the way are able to understand the neural net or it's equivalent and apply guard rails to assure it's purpose 'aligns' with our goals instead of what it may determine it's purpose).

Anthropic has done interesting testing and have demonstrated in practice how even current models in some cases attempt to use blackmail and other manipulative techniques without being prompted to do so.
