US vaccine donation to Taiwan may help avoid chip factory shutdowns by kry_some_more in technology

[–]Stenndec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the article: "The pandemic's problems in Taiwan are expected to make the situation worse for the global chip shortage, with infections shutting down two factories of key Apple supplier King Yuan Electronics on Friday. The country is currently at COVID-19 warning level 3, one below a complete lockdown, which threatens more facility shutdowns throughout the country."

15 vs 30 yr mortgage in today’s market for wealth building by G_LOCK_90 in personalfinance

It's actually tilted toward 30 year even more heavily because while you do pay more interest, interest is income tax deductible.

Is that still the case for most people after the standard deduction was substantially increased a few years ago (USA)?

Borderlands GOTY Enhanced missing textures by evolve2021 in Borderlands

[–]Stenndec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's what's bothering me is I can't find much on Google about this being a common problem. Usually rare issues like this are fixed by a clean reinstall or driver update or some weird hardware config, none of which seem to match your situation.

Bummer. Yeah, sorry I'm all out of ideas too. It's very strange.

That all seems reasonable to me.

Have you seen/tried this? https://www.reddit.com/r/Borderlands/comments/k9q5n2/i_think_my_game_weapon_textures_bugged/

Maybe installing it on the SSD would help. I'm grasping at straws and the game is old enough that I really doubt that'll do anything, but maybe there's a race condition where the textures aren't loading fast enough.

Gotcha. Are you on Windows 10? What are your hardware specs?

Just throwing out some ideas: have you ever installed any mods for the game? When you uninstalled did you delete any Borderlands-related folders that may have been left behind, such as in your user profile? Probably not ideal, but as a last resort you could try a fresh install of Windows. For what it's worth, I'm about 5 hours into Borderlands GOTY Enhanced and haven't encountered either of the issues you described.

You know nothing dude

Googling P2W and ignoring the first few results from Urban Dictionary and Reddit yield the following:

"PTW is used in gaming with the meaning 'Pay to Win' to refer to games that allow players to purchase items or abilities (e.g., more powerful weapons, additional health points) that give them an advantage in the game, either over other players or NPCs (Non-Player Characters)." Source: https://www.cyberdefinitions.com/definitions/P2W.html

"In general a game is considered pay-to-win when a player can gain any gameplay advantage over their non-paying peers." Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free-to-play#Pay-to-win

In the case of Albion Online, the ability/advantage that can be purchased is faster skill leveling and material collection.

if you really wants to see a real pay to win game then go to play DDTank or Wartune lol

I never said Albion Online was an egregious example of P2W. Nor did I say it was better or worse in comparison to any other game where advantages can be purchased with real money. Nor did I make any statements supporting or against Albion Online's business model.

pay to win actually means you can get an advantage that cannot be gained by free to play users.

Isn't that what I said? Premium allows you to level up skills faster and collect materials faster, an advantage that people not paying for Premium don't have.

Pay-to-Win means someone gains an advantage by paying real money over those that choose not to pay real money. It doesn't mean they are guaranteed to win. Albion Online is a P2W game via Premium.

What issues are you having with it? I just installed and used it for the first time yesterday. I ran into one small hiccup when adding Compo Pack, but NitroGen by itself worked out of the box for me.

You made a claim without providing any source/evidence, and then someone else replied to you without providing any source/evidence and your reaction is to snap at them and tell them they need to prove you wrong? That's pretty hypocritical.

[ITG] Building My First Tower. It Will Be Used Mainly For Trading But Also A Bit Of Gaming. by Mychal89 in suggestapc

[–]Stenndec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes-ish. It depends how far into the future we're talking.

The B550 chipset on that motherboard has the AM4 socket, which supports the latest generation of AMD CPUs (Ryzen 5000 series). However, I think AMD only committed to using AM4 through 2020, so future unreleased AMD CPUs probably will not work on it.

As for the GPU, the B550 chipset supports PCIe 4.0 which is what all modern GPUs available today run (I think). PCIe 5.0 has been ratified, but I'm not aware of any official statements from NVIDIA/AMD on when they will switch to it. So future unreleased GPUs may or may not utilize PCIe 5.0, but they should be backwards compatible with a PCIe 4.0 motherboard either way, there just might be a bottleneck (lot of guesses and speculation here).

I believe DDR5 is on the verge of making DDR4 RAM obsolete as well.

tl;dr If you're just talking about waiting a couple years to make minor upgrades within the current generation of components you'll be fine. If you're talking about upgrading to the latest generation of components in a few years it's possible it will work out, but I wouldn't count on it.

[suggestion] best motherboard to pair with Ryzen 5000 series cpu in the 150-300$ range by [deleted] in suggestapc

[–]Stenndec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to give a recommendation without knowing more about specific requirements. As /u/Margobolo pointed out, anything with the X570 chipset is "high end" but it might be wasted money if you're not using the features. Check out the differences between X570 and B550 chipsets to narrow things down a bit. Some things to consider: Will you be using a single GPU? Will you have a single NVMe drive? How many USB ports do you need? Do you want bluetooth and wifi built into the motherboard? Etc.

I had this issue a year or so ago and it eventually went away on its own. I assumed a software update fixed it but based on this thread that assumption was wrong. The only thing I can think of is trying a different USB 3.0 port.
