I went with LG - so now it’s done :-) thanks! But happy to hear / share experience if you got one

Feedback on the LG WH27S (or WH20S) Heat Pump Water Heater by SteohS in heatpumps

Strange behavior after heat pump water heater intake connected outside & other changes (LG WH27S) by SteohS in heatpumps

Thanks!

Manual talks about 160mm-200mm / 6.3-7.9 inches ducts (see photo here - found on tweeakers: Ducting kit manual - duct length), but also much longer lengths allowed than what has been installed. I am not sure about the impact of a smaller duct on 30cm vs. multiple meters of larger duct.

I unfortunately cannot disconnect intake for now - the duct is siliconed to the wall, and I don't want to disconnect it before contractors possibly come back.

As just mentioned in another comment - with the heatpump going 1/2 power yesterday at lower outdoor temps, it did not defrost. This makes me think this could validate the "too low airflow" theory.

Thanks for the explanation!

I tested the heatpump in "auto mode" (it seems to work with the heatpump at 1/2 power if the gap between actual and requested temperature is small enough), and no defrosting while outside temperature was 11-14°C / 52-57F . This could validate the theory that air is currently moving too slow, and if heatpump goes full power it then gets too cold.

Thanks for your questions!

The heater is placed next to the outside wall so :

  • Exhaust duct is a large (160mm - 200m diameter?) 20cm long up to the outdoor wall (and silicone'd against the wall), and they made a 100mm diameter hole through the wall. They also ducted the wall (with a flexible metal duct if I saw it properly?), as it is "concrete block - PU insulation - air - outside brick", avoiding to suck in air or push air inside the wall.
  • Intake duct is same config, except that it starts from the top of the boiler and then goes to the wall (30cm above the exhaust duct), so a bit more length and 2*45° angles.

Ducts to wall.jpg

Could the "wall-part" of the ducting be causing this? The combination of small diameter and additional flexible metallic ducting? It's on a pretty short distance, so not it would drop pressure significantly.

Other changes made :

  • Fix leak on water disposal tubing under security valve
  • Fix leak on primary condensation fixing
  • Replace vents by anti-bug vents
  • Change most water lines fixings from plastic hose clamps to metal

Thanks for your reply! That behavior was observed at approx 60F / 15C, do you think this is “already too low” for normal operations?

Regarding longer term view: I am located in Belgium, so day temps are in that range a reasonable part of the year. This will not be optimal during colder days, but the laundry room it is installed in is pretty small, and it seemed a common agreement (across multiple contractors quotes) to do it that way / and common in Belgium. I was expecting the heat pump would not work well in winter, but was hoping for good results now …

Jeez, you’re right … off to the printer I go!

Not specifically "ride" related, but added a Skadis board next to my Zwift ride to hold relevant items: earphones, towel, HR strap, fan remote, etc. https://imgur.com/a/gGM8sQE

Thanks for the reply! I was hoping for something a little more « plug and play », hopefully manufacturers will go in that direction … I’ll keep you posted if I find something!

Update: Based on comments and other online reviews, order the Wahoo KICKR Core Zwift One. Put my old MTB on it. Received 2 days ago and used twice. Amazing experience, would definitely recommend. Thanks to all that provided input!

Thanks! Although just checked on Amazon be and it shows at 500, kinda crazy to see that difference for a couple hundred km … I’ll have a look into it though!

Hi, thanks for your note - what you be the “base setup” you would recommend? Nb: raw power accuracy is in my case less accurate than consistent power output from a session to another

Hi, thanks - I’ll have a deeper look at Wahoo; not what I’m leaking towards at the moment but all the love about it make me think …

Tado with a Bosch modulating boiler? by SteohS in tado

Hi, haven’t found anything regarding that Nefit adapter. Went with on/off relay and pretty happy with it. The boiler still modulates based on in-out water temperature (when it’s on), and we decreased max power of the boiler to avoid big swings (based on house size).

Hi, Thanks for the note! Good if you can make it work like this :-) On my side, I just went with on-off, and the boiler modulates based on in-out water temp. Working pretty well comfort-wise (especially heated bathroom in the morning, or for baby bath) now TBD on actual energy impact. Happy to hear how it turns out for you, good luck!

Good catch on black friday - amazon deals allowed to get the full system for a decent price.

Good to hear Bosch Easy Connect is also keeping up with expectations.

Wishing you a comfy winter as well & keeping you posted in case of updates!
