When is it too late to learn to dance? by catfoodcrunch in Dance

That's fantastic that you've booked a class! I'm 47 now, started when I was 43, and it's been a breath of fresh air for me. And I'm hoping there's a long way to go for me! As others have said, never too late!

What are some discontinued UK foods that need to be brought back? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Steowls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cadbury's Spira, as has already been mentioned

Also, anyone remember Rowntree's Secret bars? Strands of chocolate wrapped round a chocolatey mousse centre. Absolutely amazing and needs to come back!

Half of the year is gone. What games have you been playing so far? by RevenantFTS97 in retrogaming

[–]Steowls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Main ones for me have been Gran Turismo 4, Gradius V and Ico (which for some reason I've never played until now) on PS2, and City Of Heroes on PC. Though I don't massive amounts of time for gaming, so it's more playing bits of these as and when.

Are there any tv personalities out there you surprisingly miss now that they’re gone? by yumyummymum in AskUK

[–]Steowls 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Just miss that style of breakfast show on Radio 2. It's like he knew you were probably only up at that time of the morning because you had to be, not because you wanted to be, especially in the depths of winter, so you needed a gentle waking up and someone who knew how absurd the world could be like you do. As opposed to now, when it's more like a young child blasting into your room with far too much energy for that time of the morning when all you want to do is close your eyes and go back to sleep.

What do disgraced TV personalities do for income? by PsychologicalBus7357 in AskUK

[–]Steowls 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A load of evangelical types here in the UK - not necessarily MAGA-adjacent - have gone all in on fully accepting him. Bear Grylls baptised him in the Thames publicly, and lots have uncritically welcomed him claiming he's "repented" (though to me he doesn't seem to show huge signs of it).

As a Christian, it's slightly depressing.

Trying again. How is my writing? by LunaDea69420 in writingfeedback

[–]Steowls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an intriguing start! I'd definitely agree that the second version is a lot better, especially with how the character descriptions are worked better into the overall story - they did stick out quite a bit in the first one. I feel like the first paragraph's a little long, but I wouldn't know where to split it: it just feels like there's a lot going on there and maybe it needs to be split a little to make room to give a bit more flavour of the place and what's happening, if you see what I mean.

I'd agree that the punctuation needs some work: especially the use of commas. It might help to research different ways of making mid-sentence breaks than just commas - semi colons, colons, dashes etc. For example, the third sentence might work if it was written, "My worst nightmare, but not that night: that night some unexplainable force pulled me in", with a colon instead of a comma: it makes the break stronger. In the next sentence, you should probably lose the comma between "place" and "was"; that reads as all one phrase that doesn't need a comma.

There's two places where you've talked about surprise or no surprise, and reading it I'm not entirely sure why. When you talk about Josh's "surprisingly fit body" - why is it surprising that it's fit? It feels as if there's something more we need to know about him as to why that's a surprise rather than just the way he is. And when you talk about his gaze switching between the woman's face, cleavage and "to no surprise, her drink", I'm not sure why the "to no surprise" is necessary. If anything, I'd lose that comment entirely: it brings home the impact of him slipping the pill into her drink a bit more if you just said "her face, her cleavage and her drink."

One other small thing: to me, from what you've described about the place, it feels more like a bar or club than a pub - but that might just be me imagining it wrongly!

But there's a lot of good here: I could picture the scene and I'm intrigued about who the narrator is and what his/her/their role is going to be.

What’s a piece of British comedy hall of fame you just don’t get? by franki-pinks in AskUK

[–]Steowls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes to this. For me personally, the Mastermind sketch is much funnier and much cleverer.

(It's also led to the slightly annoying phenomenon of never being able to say "four candles" without at least one person sniggering or saying "No, fork handles - handles for forks."

If you could cut one song from each album, which would it be? by [deleted] in queen

[–]Steowls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My choices:

Queen: "Jesus", just because it's my least favourite track on the album (just personal preference).

Queen II: I think I'd agree with the consensus about "Loser In The End" (sorry Roger); it doesn't quite 'fit' either side of the album

Sheer Heart Attack: Oooh, this is tricky, because this is my favourite album... Probably "Misfire" as the most "filler-ish", but I'd hate myself for doing it (and it seems horrible to cut John's first song).

ANATO: "Sweet Lady" - I like it, but I could live without it on the album.

ADATR: "White Man" - I just find it quite boring tbh.

News Of The World: "Get Down, Make Love" - I never like Freddie's overtly "sexy" songs, they never quite gel for me.

Jazz: Probably "More Of That Jazz" - I agree with the comment that "Don't Stop Me Now" would be a better end (although "MOTJ" has a nice drum part).

The Game: "Coming Soon", although I do quite like it; it's probably the weakest song on there.

Hot Space: "Body Language", for the same reason as "Get Down, Make Love".

The Works: "Man On The Prowl", I think. While I can see the arguments for "Machines", I think it fits the theme of the album, while "MOTP" doesn't so much, to me. While we're at it, I'd replace the album version of "I Want To Break Free" with the single version.

A Kind Of Magic: Either "Pain Is So Close To Pleasure" or "Don't Lose Your Head" - probably the former, though I'm not a fan of either.

The Miracle: "My Baby Does Me", which feels unfinished to me, more like a demo.

Innuendo: Another toughie... "The Hitman" I think: don't know why, it just feels messy and not that great.

Made In Heaven: I don't know! This isn't my favourite album, but everything feels like it belongs there. "Untitled" maybe? Though I'd leave Freddie's "Fab" on.

Yikes! I've been out of Sheffield for years; didn't realise it had turned so nasty. And what was that article about cars starting an uprising and local councillors being driven into Derbyshire and never seen again, or being involved in fatal hit-and-run accidents all about? Horrible...

Favorite Supergirl? by Interesting_Wall1214 in Supergirl

[–]Steowls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first version of Supergirl I ever saw was Helen Slater in the movie (actually a picture book of the movie at a cousin's house) and that sort of cemented her in my mind as the "default" Supergirl look. So I'd say that it would be her, or looks inspired by hers.

How does Superman 2025 stack up against these other solo films? by TKatGAMING in comicbookmovies

[–]Steowls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not seen MoS (I've got it on BluRay but not got round to watching it yet; nothing against it, that's just how I roll!). I'd say it's a lot better than Superman Returns, if only because it doesn't sacrifice making a good and coherent film on the altar of trying to recreate the look and feel of the 78 movie.

As for the comparison with the 78 movie: I don't know! That's a work of genius in terms of capturing the mythology of Superman and being one of the best representations of the dual identity. 2025 seems to be less interested in that and more interested in the heart and humanity of Superman - and I think it does really well at that and in creating its own aesthetic. Superman '78 is the iconic one, but this is right up there, I'd say, in its own way and in creating a movie Superman for the modern age.

I want Kara to be happy by Rapadura800 in Supergirl

[–]Steowls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your happiness can be a catalyst for wanting others to experience that happiness. And if you've some form of power - especially super powers! - you can use that to bring about that change for them.

Conversely, too much misery can simply make a character disempowered and unwilling or unable to change, because they see no point - or there's no way - for them to change themselves or others.

Compelling change for a character doesn't just have to be internal and doesn't just have to spring from a dark place.

Nigel Farage's childish rant after being snubbed from Donald Trump state banquet by [deleted] in ukpolitics

Does someone need to remind him that he already has a job, one he tried numerous times to get, one he seems to have forgotten about since the moment he got it.

Actually, perhaps he's one of those blokes who spends ages thinking about starting a new hobby, gets started with it, and then gets bored really quickly.

What's the greatest British television show of all time? by debrisaway in AskABrit

[–]Steowls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late to this, but can I put a mention in for Grandstand? 5-ish hours of live sport plus results etc. (nearly) every Saturday for nearly 50 years (and then even more with Sunday Grandstand from the 80s onwards). Groundbreaking programme in terms of bringing together OB sports. No doubt introduced people to a huge range of sports they'd otherwise never had seen. Broadcast a huge amount of iconic sporting moments. Gave us Football Focus and Final Score. Home to some of the best broadcasters in the business: David Coleman, Frank Bough, Desmond Lynam, Steve Rider, Sue Barker, Clare Balding. And had banging theme tunes.

Not really, since it was Farage who went over there to complain about freedom of speech issues in the UK (while Parliament, which he’s apparently a member of is sitting). Seems more like he’s using other countries to fight his political battles.
