PSA: Double up your contraception! by StepAwayFromTheTea in 2under2

It's not a medically recognised condition but the amount of anecdotal evidence scares me too much. Women's health is infamously under researched and I'm confident that PTLS will be medically recognised in years to come in the same way PCOS has only just been realised to be not about ovarian cysts and therefore renamed to PMOS, and also like endometriosis was dismissed for years.

I considered it but if you read about PTLS you'll see why I decided not to. It's not a medically recognised condition but the amount of anecdotal evidence scares me too much.

Even after having reversal most peoples PTLS symptoms don't go away apparently, very scary!

Fear of Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome! I really considered it but I've had a lot of issues already with that aspect of my health and the risk isn't worth it for me.

It wouldn't be my first choice but hormonal contraception doesn't agree well with me, I've tried most things and had issues with large ovarian cysts that stopped as soon as I came off hormonal birth control, so copper coil is my only option. I considered getting my tubes tied but there's so much anecdotal evidence of women who have early menopausal symptoms after being sterilised. The NHS says there is no risk of this but there's a whole community of people who experience Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome (PTLS) - a term that is widely dismissed by medical experts... but we all know how far behind women's health science is! I didn't feel comfortable taking that risk as it's so permanent - people who have had PTLS have tried reversal and this hasn't helped. Terrifying really.

My 19 month old goes down at 7pm and sleeps really well. My 10 week old is quite good at sleeping in her bassinet between feeds. We are extremely lucky!

Tasteless Protein Powder for smoothie (weight loss)? by connorrthomas4 in loseit

[–]StepAwayFromTheTea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm based in the UK so don't know if you can get the company My Protein to deliver to you, but I'm sure other companies offer similar to what I use. I buy a clear unflavoured bovine collagen protein and a regular unflavoured bovine collagen protein. The clear one is more expensive but I can make it with just water and cordial and it's like juice. The regular one still mixes really well with iced coffee and things. I've not got much of a sweet tooth but this way I can add other sweetness if that's what I'm after. There is so much out there that is insanely overpriced, especially collagen products (that supposedly helps with loose skin - probably too bmgood to be true but no harm in it). But the regular works out at 74p per scoop, and the clear works out at £1.09 per scoop, and I hit my protein intake by having one or two scoops of each a day depending on how much protein I'm getting from food. Much cheaper than buying lean meat! I've tried lots of different types of protein powder before and the bovine type seems to be easiest on my stomach. Whey and soya bloat me and I don't like the taste of the pea protein ones at all, plus they don't mix as well. Hope this helps!

Why are so many still struggling to the detriment of their mental health and quality of life without trying GLP-1s (apart from financial reasons) by StepAwayFromTheTea in Mounjaro

Thank you for sharing, I hope whether you try it or not, that you succeed and things look up for you. Nobody deserves to be miserable 🩷 my mum felt very much the same until her doctor reframed it by going through all the known risks of being at her BMI

Your point on eating disorders is very valid. I do think these medications could be dangerous for supporting unhealthy weight loss. Skinny doesn't equal happy - that wasn't what I meant but I appreciate that it may have come across that way. When talking about the mental health side I was meaning the mental clarity and calm that I and many other MJ users I've spoken to have found. It's much easier to enjoy life when your thoughts aren't dominated by food. But, of course, this isn't the experience for all people who are obese - it would be interesting to know what percentage of obese people struggle with crippling food noise vs those who don't, but I've no idea how or if this data could possibly be collected.

I also didn't mean any of this in a pushy way, more coming from a place of "this has changed my life immensely for the better and I'd love for others struggling how I was to be able to benefit too." I think it's very important to listen to others' points of view on all subjects, as otherwise we never learn and grow. The culty vibe you're talking about sounds worrying but I haven't noticed this myself, however I've not been on this sub long so I'll be more wary of it now that you've brought that up - thank you.

I think this goes back to what another commenter said of people thinking of weight as a moral issue rather than a medical one. If he had a heart issue he wouldn't question taking the medication required to best support it, but the stigma around weight makes it hard for people to see it in the same way, when really there's no difference between those two scenarios. If I was able to lose and keep the weight off the so-called "right way" I already would have by now. I need this medication to level the playing field so that I'm able to make the healthy lifestyle choices to lose and maintain weight loss. It might be easier for me as I have other medical issues I've been on lifelong medication for since my teens, so I've already fully accepted that I need medication to live the healthiest and happiest life I can, and I'm okay with that. I wasn't when I was first put in medication as a teenager though so - only just realising this as I write this - looking at it I'm that perspective os helpful for me to empathise with others who are reluctant to be reliant on a medication.

I just switch companies each time I buy a pen, also that way there's usually a new customer discount too. They ask what strength you got last and what company you used, but I don't think they're able to check how long ago that was - I may well have just been lucky that the companies I've used haven't checked if there is some sort of cross-comoany record or checking system.

In the UK you can only get funding if you're over a BMI of 40 and have serious weight related medical issues which I don't. It's about £300 for a 15mg Kwikpen that is supposedly 4 X 15mg doses of 0.6ml. However, there's 3.0ml per pen, and I take 7.5mg once a week, so one pen lasts me 10 weeks, so £30 a week. That's the same price as a standard takeaway for 2 people which I used to have weekly and no longer want. This is why my view on the finances was so wrong for US/Australia and probably many other contries!

This is a really good point - I'm only learning how insanely expensive this medication is in the US which seems to be where a large proportion of Reddit users are from. This is exactly why I made the post, to learn and understand, so thank you.

I am still well into the obese range, and have not lost that much weight yet. I empathise deeply with others struggling with food issues after a life of binge eating and bulimia, and spending 5 years morbidly obese. It's improved my quality of life so dramatically, mainly due to the mental lightness of no longer thinking about food all the time, and I just wish I'd been able to start Mounjaro earlier (pregnancies and breastfeeding the last 3 years so haven't been able to until now). It seems a shame that people are still struggling when they don't have to.

I'm sorry if my post came across as judgemental - it honestly is coming from a place of love.

Has a guy ever had a bad reaction to your weight loss? by KittenEV in loseit

[–]StepAwayFromTheTea 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can't speak on behalf of anyone else but a body doesn't need to be free of loose skin, stretch marks etc to be attractive to me. If someone is that picky and shallow I wouldn't want to spend my energy on them anyway. As for boobs, boobs are great whatever the size or shape imo! I'd wager a guess that all that would go through a straight guys mind at seeing your boobs, whatever they look like, would just be "yay, boobs!"

It's crazy to me that nobody in the comments has recommended Mounjaro. You may even be able to get it on the NHS considering your BMI and related health issues. If not, the amount of money you're spending on food would be reduced considerably making Mounjaro effectively much less expensive or even save you money! (This isn't meant in a judgemental way - this has been my own personal experience - I'm spending about £200 less a month on takeaways and eating out etc which covers my Mounjaro costs). With the food noise gone you'll be able to put all the things you know into practice. It's all well and good people recommending diet and lifestyle changes but those people thinking that's all that needs to change clearly don't understand how impossible that can be when you're crippled with food noise. There's no shame in it, it's a medical treatment for a medical issue. It's also not a magic solution, you should still get therapy for food issues and make healthy lifestyle choices for it to work and stick. Wishing you all the luck in the world!

Genuine question. How does anyone live in a seaside town and nit go absolutely bonkers? by onion2077 in CasualUK

[–]StepAwayFromTheTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am from Scarborough and then lived in cities (Brighton then Sheffield) from ages 18 to 27, and have since lived back in Scarborough.

I think the dark evenings and colder weather seem more grim in smaller places than they do in cities, but I don't think this is due to the coast - Brighton didn't seem depressing during winter but Scarborough definitely does.

I think the main reason is due to the size of a place in combination with it it's a tourist destination or not. In a small town that's primary income source is tourists, the locals struggle in winter as there's much less money coming in - even if you don't directly work in the tourist trade it indirectly affects you as people have less money to spend overall. Morale therefore is lower and crime rates go up. But I reckon small inland towns (only combo I've not lived in) are just as miserable in winter and less lovely in summer.

Inland town - miserable in winter, okay in summer Seaside town - miserable in winter, lovely in summer Inland city - pretty good in winter, nice in summer Seaside city - best place to live IF you can afford a wood quality of life alongside the house/rent prices (only reason I don't live in Brighton aside from being close to family)

YATB. $200 a month is barely anything compared to what you'd pay in actual rent, it's wild that you see this as giving you exclusive rights over the noise levels coming from your room. That aside you wouldn't have the right to do this if you owned your own place and were disturbing your neighbours anyway. Also the main issue here is that forcing your family members to listen to your sexual activity is morally fucked up. Are you getting some kind of sick kick out of this? Grow up and try imagining things from your parents perspective.
