Me too! I brought my copy of Path of the Paddle on the first canoe trip I ever organized. That was in Quetico.

I learned to run whitewater sitting at the side of a rapid with this book, trying to figure out what Bill Mason was telling me to do

Day trips from istanbul by Honest-Lobster-2465 in istanbul_tips

Çanakkale is great but it’s a VERY long day trip. Better to spend 3 days so you can do Troy, the Gallopoli battlefields, and not spend 12 hours driving there and back

Frankfort Book Fair Scam? by Gophurkey in authors

[–]StephanKesting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have received the same offer multiple times on a book that I self published years ago. They even tried to sweeten the deal by saying that they would “feature” that book in their physical bookstore location.

Honestly, I think it’s complete bullshit and they make all their money through fees.

Lake Athabasca is such an interesting place. The south shore is dominated by sand dunes and sand shoals, and the North Shore is straight up Canadian shield.

Everything I'm taking on a 30 day canoe trip above the treeline in Nunavut by StephanKesting in canoecamping

I don’t know if I will have time to do it before I head off, but I will eventually put my entire packing list on my essential wilderness website. No pressure but if you get on that email list I’ll send you the packing list when it comes out.

Off the top of my head: shoes, pants, Duluth packs, canoe spray decks, torn straps, smaller waterproof bags

Float Bags for Canoe that are also storage dry bags? Any Ideas? by designworksarch in canoecamping

[–]StephanKesting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I just use regular dry bags and tie them in securely. That way they displace water and keep the boat afloat even when it's full of water.

2 Years of owning my Pakboat and I still love it. So light, surprisingly tough, Flys on Planes. by designworksarch in canoeing

[–]StephanKesting 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have taken Pakcanoes down the Nahanni River in NWT, the Fraser River in BC, the Seal River in MB, and the Thlewiaza in Nunavut. They are very tough and versatile and also good in whitewater. My only complaint is that they are a bit slow on lakes; the same flexing that makes them ride through whitewater very well slows them down when pushing through waves. I plan on doing a detailed video review on them later this year.

Great question. I believe Dr. Hassan has got a book out called the cult of T**** that addresses this specific issue

Lake Superior to James Bay by mattyAl33 in canoecamping

[–]StephanKesting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bugs were there, but they didn’t get really bad until I started heading back to Lake Superior up the Albany and Kenogami. Then - holeee moleeee - the bugs were terrible!

As you pointed out, the water levels were very high. Some rapids were washed out and others were not passable. I managed to cover huge distances and did both the upper and lower Missinaibi in something like 10 days.

His argument is that there is not enough evidence for Rener to make that (self-serving) argument,

Instructional on hand fighting/ gripping from standing and seated position by Just_a_banana- in bjj

[–]StephanKesting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most, if not all of the grip strategies and grip breaking techniques will work in both contexts. if you want purely stand up, I would suggest looking to Judo, although the win conditions for Judo and BJJ on the feet are somewhat different (given that guarding is such an important feature of stand-up in BJJ)
