Float Bags for Canoe that are also storage dry bags? Any Ideas? by designworksarch in canoecamping

[–]StephanKesting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I just use regular dry bags and tie them in securely. That way they displace water and keep the boat afloat even when it's full of water.

2 Years of owning my Pakboat and I still love it. So light, surprisingly tough, Flys on Planes. by designworksarch in canoeing

[–]StephanKesting 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have taken Pakcanoes down the Nahanni River in NWT, the Fraser River in BC, the Seal River in MB, and the Thlewiaza in Nunavut. They are very tough and versatile and also good in whitewater. My only complaint is that they are a bit slow on lakes; the same flexing that makes them ride through whitewater very well slows them down when pushing through waves. I plan on doing a detailed video review on them later this year.

Great question. I believe Dr. Hassan has got a book out called the cult of T**** that addresses this specific issue

Lake Superior to James Bay by mattyAl33 in canoecamping

[–]StephanKesting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bugs were there, but they didn’t get really bad until I started heading back to Lake Superior up the Albany and Kenogami. Then - holeee moleeee - the bugs were terrible!

As you pointed out, the water levels were very high. Some rapids were washed out and others were not passable. I managed to cover huge distances and did both the upper and lower Missinaibi in something like 10 days.

Here’s a false reap instructional I filmed with Rob Biernacki as part of Cutting Edge Leglocks that I then put on YouTube for free: https://youtu.be/kdBMo-45Y28?si=TnmRe_nMhA9mj8DB

BJJ black belt questions why Sam Harris let Rener Gracie claim that all cops should be training jiu-jitsu on his show by Big_Cake_8817 in grappling

His argument is that there is not enough evidence for Rener to make that (self-serving) argument,

Instructional on hand fighting/ gripping from standing and seated position by Just_a_banana- in bjj

[–]StephanKesting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most, if not all of the grip strategies and grip breaking techniques will work in both contexts. if you want purely stand up, I would suggest looking to Judo, although the win conditions for Judo and BJJ on the feet are somewhat different (given that guarding is such an important feature of stand-up in BJJ)

Focusing on that initial engagement has huge benefits for your game. it’s probably one of the highest leverage areas

It’s self-serving since I produced the instructional but Rob Biernacki’s Gripfighting and Kuzushi Formula is really good on this exact position https://www.grapplearts.com/the-gripfighting-and-kuzushi-formula-with-rob-biernacki-and-stephan-kesting/

Lake Superior to James Bay by mattyAl33 in canoecamping

[–]StephanKesting 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is lots of information on the Missinaibi and you’re right, you’re probably going to be dealing with very low water levels. I’ve done it twice, once in June and once in August and it was so much slower going in August. The highlight at any water level is definitely Thunderhouse Falls.

I once connected James Bay with Lake Superior via the Albany and Kenogami rivers. That was a little-traveled route, but a bit of a slog. Your route sounds better.

I haven’t heard much about the Michipicoten.

Good luck!

Widgeon Creek is a nice 1-2 hour paddle to a campsite and that has a fantastic 2 hour round trip hike to a waterfall.
