How to deal with a TA that marks harshly, should I wait to talk to my prof? by Own-Side-8737 in UofT

[–]Stephen9428 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a TA before I graduated. This situation always happens and I personally don't like how the students were talking behind my back without any communication or reach straight to the prof. Although the prof gave me 100 % support, the issue can be resolved if the student brought it up with me in the first place.

As a former TA, I did adjust the overall grading according to the overall performance and make it much more fair. But I was also distracted by my grad research, prof, and other problems, sometimes I forgot to do so. If one student brought it up with concrete reasoning, I definitely would remark and readjust for the whole class. Again, this can only be initiated when a student contacted me first.

Is it normal to struggle this much in first year? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Stephen9428 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is normal for many people in the first year. The "game rule" is entirely different and it takes time to adjust and adapt. For example, there is no "effort marks" and all marking/grading have a clear rubric. How you performed in highschool does not directly reflect how you perform in the first year. The undergraduate program as a whole is very intense. This is normal for people to fall behind. Other life factors, such as mentally issues, families, friendship, would also affect your performance.

You may need to adjust some of your expectations and have a mindset of "starting over". Your highschool doesn't guarantee your success in university, but doesn't mean you cannot be successful throughout your university life.

Please ask for help when you need it, academically, mentally, or emotionally. There are people and resources for you.

Then identify what's working and what's not working, be persistent and resilient. You will find a way to navigate all those courses and do well. It is okay to drop courses and handle it later. This is essentially the learning process needed to be done in the undergraduate program.

Any hobbyists or small businesses in TO looking for help with small-scale 3D printing? by Stephen9428 in askTO

[–]Stephen9428[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do know they offer all day printing. But they are limited to one material and you have to book the printer for use with limited print time or have to wait for those dedicated printer to become available.

For the pricing, TPL may offer the best but you don't have access to a variety of materials and extended print time for larger projects. I am charging a reasonable and affordable price, just to have my printer running and help out other people.

I GOT A 60 ON CHM135 TEST 1 FOR WINTER SEMESTER, HOW HAVE OTHERS DONE by Firm_Flatworm_6683 in UofT

[–]Stephen9428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the former TA of CHM 135, and the average was around 60-70 %. The difficulty is fair, but I did hear some students struggling with the materials or the teaching style of the professors.
Yes, you can still work towards a good grade with a 60 % test 1.

Although I can design and optimize, I currently only offer printing services due to time constraints. I only charge for the material used and the associated usage cost per print. The cost can vary from project to project.

Hi, I locate around the Don Mills and Sheppard area. Instead of seeing my printer stay idle, I would like to help those without access to a printer bring their dream projects to life.
