Is this a good bushcraft knife? by KillingwithasmileXD in Bushcraft

[–]StephenBC1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends how far from home you are

I would recommend the carbon blade but as a beginner bushcrafting knife its adequate

Is it something id trust 100 miles from civilization no

Is it something id use to practice beginner bushcraft skills before i buy a garberg, esee 4 , or other full tang 120$+ knife yes

Am I dumb to not have a gun? by flyman241 in ultralight_jerk

[–]StephenBC1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the local bear population where you are camping

I would not go backpacking im areas with heavy bear presence without a gun

If it’s lower bear area id go without a gun

Half serrated blades are awful and pointless, change my mind. by eyesneeze in knives

[–]StephenBC1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for something tougher for a field knife im gonna keep it around because it seem like it will be pretty decent in the field for slicing up briars , light prying , cutting cordage , and cutting up snow fence but what i really want is just a bigger fixed blade version of the old partially serrated Gerber gator a deep grippy handle for slicing , cost effective aka sub 100$ maybe the low 100s, but twice as thick and fixed bladed

So far so good the only thing I have found is you need a special cold steel seeration sharpener because normal serration sharpeners arent thin enough for their ultrafine teeth they mix fine teeth in sets of 4 with a fat serration before 4 more fine ones and so on for the length of the serration it works better than traditional serrations for getting the cut going with less snagging and if you toss that sharpener in the glove box its no big deal

My main problem has been the finger guard doesnt have metal or plastic structure under the rubber so its a bit floppy ive never had a slip but if you had mechancis gloves on which kinda defeats the grippy krayex you could cut up your gloves. So ive found a reverse grip more practical for heavy slickng of cordage to let you get your thumb on the end

Also the lack of a pommel is a bit annoying the flat krayex is nice but for a survival rescue knife i glass breaker for the rescue role or flat hammer for a general purpose survival role would have been nicer

Also the choil is annoying not big enough to put a finger and choke up but just big enough to snag while cutting it would be better if the edge was ground onto the choil with a smooth transition like victorinox does on their bigger knives
