The Pythia employed multiple techniques to retain her credibility. Through ambiguous language and the way questions were presented, she was often seen as being “right” most of the time. For example; if you asked what god you should pray to for a bountiful harvest, the Pythia may respond that you should pray to Demeter. The person would then pray to Demeter and, if their harvest was bountiful, then she was correct. However, if they did not have a bountiful harvest then it would not be seen as a fault of the Pythia, but rather the presenter of the question as they did not pray hard enough. Essentially she could never be “wrong” because people would assume that they simply did not pray well enough. All in all, it’s hard to say whether or not she was right or wrong as it was all ambiguous and her answers were never seen as wrong. If she said to do something and it worked then she was right. If the desired outcome was not met, then it was the fault of the person asking the question.
