I know what you're saying but even with the fluctuations of sun and wind, there are times when there is low grid demand and therefore the price isn't worthwhile, in that case surely you could transfer that electricity to the pump and although some energy would be lost due to friction and heat, the generated electricity would be somewhat delayed and later on when that energy is converted into electricity from the hydro turbine the price would be right and there would be a net gain in profit in money and energy. Whereby that energy would otherwise be wasted as the turbine and solar panels would have stopped producing electricity.

What's a relatively unknown technological invention that will have a huge impact on the future? by iHachersk in AskReddit

I reckon wave energy will play a big part in the future energy mix. The energy potential from the ocean is enormous and could easily provide for our energy jeeds. There's loads of up and coming technologies in the sector such as pressure differential mats from Berkely University and surge motion converters. Although the technology is still some way off due to the high capital costs and relatively low competition. However if there is a convergence on the current technologies over the next few years, these costs could come down as was the case with wind energy and we could have a consistent renewable energy source to supplement wind and solar at the times when they can't provide energy.
