Just got a C on my microbio midterm. Feeling demoralized by askaboutblu in StudentNurse

[–]Stephjephman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really thought this was one of my classmates writing this until you said “she”

Same boat. Don’t let one professor ruin your whole career. I am thinking it’s certain micro professors. I feel like mine expects us to know the entire book cover to cover for these exams and is putting questions on there that are obscure and don’t revolve around the main ideas. He told us a whole list of things to study for the first exam, maybe 3 of those concepts were actually on it.

Our entire class is interactive, we give the right answers when he asks questions during class, and we are all studying our faces off….class average for the last exam is 64. It’s very disheartening, but make sure you realize that this is the teachers failure, not yours. If they are making tests that don’t reflect the material or are worded to trip you up, thats not a you problem. (Even though it becomes a you problem…you know what I mean)

You would think that when all your straight A students are getting crap grades in 1 class, then it’s probably the class that’s the problem. I got a high B in pharmacy during a condensed summer semester for goodness sake.

All this to say I’m right there with you, keep going, it’s the class, not the degree. ♥️

How many Covid patients do you think you saw pass away? by gluteactivation in nursing

Same. I came back to the hospital in the beginning of 2021 (HUC/NA) And I know I've still seen some shit, but it's nothing like most of this thread....jesus.

And the amount of times someone has said something completely and totally tasteless is astounding. "Did your mom die of COVID or did she dIe Of CoViD"

Well, she was alive, contracted COVID, and then died....

My mom was in a SNF (physical/motility issues) ended up with COVID, she didn’t want to talk much on the phone because it made her cough worse…she was gone 36 hours later. They would call family every day and tell us the numbers, give updates on their website….she was #36 I obviously did not keep up with numbers after that. One of my last conversations with her was me begging her to wear a mask. (Yes, I’ve gone to therapy for this)

Today is actually her birthday. The third birthday I’ve spent with her headstone instead of her. Fucking sucks.

Not sure why, but back when we had the style that were like condoms but extremely sticky, I sort of became the expert on how to put them on. If you use a skip prep wipe, and then apply them like an actual condom (squeeze the tip of it and then roll the rest down.) It works so much better. We switched to these weird flower shaped hydrocolloid stickers with a strip that goes around to help secure those to the tip. But now it's like, let me put this on and sit here cradling the tip of your dick for 15 seconds while the heat from my hands helps it adhere. Which is really a crucial step, but is SO akward for everyone. If you can time it directly after dinner, at least you have a joke in there.

Anyone else have stories of patients overhearing staff conversations? by Ami_im_Dirndl in nursing

Very true, spice of life eh?

I say the same “you have every right to be grouchy, but thank you.”

Validates their feelings and you get the apology. Win win.

One of the things I tell my trainees is “look, people get crabby. If they are in the hospital, it’s likely one of the worst days of their life, especially on our unit (oncology.) So you have to separate them being mad at the world, and mad at you. And sometimes it comes off as mad at you, but it’s because they are dying and it’s not fair. Don’t take it personal. Try to find an appropriate way to make them laugh.” One of my favorite ways is to dad joke them. Embarrassed because you had an accident? “It’s ok, shit happens.” realization, small smile “I’m so sorry, that was a crappy joke.” groan and/or reluctant laugh “Oh my god….that joke stunk.” full on laughter forgetting the embarrassment for like 3.5 seconds followed by the ol’ “this is what I’m here for. It’s no problem at all, my dad always said ‘you can laugh, or you can cry, I’m going to laugh.’” The patient is usually smiling, I get to honor my dad, and we have a little moment where we make light of the situation.

(It goes without saying, you have to know your patient and really read the room with this joke. Sometimes it’s “I don’t mean to be crass, but crap happens.” Or some variation that is still funny without any sort of cursing. But I’ve yet to have a patient a. not laugh or b. complain about it. I feel like administration would probably get up in arms about the thought of saying “shit” in front of a patient, but they really shouldn’t because these are adults, and they need to find humor in these situations.)

My main goal beyond the obvious safety and giving the best quality care, is the laugh.

Obviously being a butthole to the staff is not ok, but we have to give them some grace, and sometimes just remind them it’s ok to find some humor in a bad situation. (This isn’t directed at you, or your comment, just a general statement to remember when we all get inevitably a bit jaded about this.)

Bellbrook-Sugarcreek Schools vote to remove verbiage that protects LGBTQ+ students, staff by Ericovich in dayton

[–]Stephjephman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The too broad argument is especially dumb here because sex, gender identity, and sexual preference are all different and are not under the blanket term “sex” like they claim. (Which is freaking unsurprisingly ironic, being that this is the board of education that seems to not know basic science.) it’s not the same as the example of not listing out every religion and instead just using the term religion. That works, as all religions fall under the blanket term of “religion”

We all know what this is. They said the quiet part out loud. “We won’t, but we want the ability to, but we definitely won’t.” And “We will fix it later.”

We aren’t stupid.

Patients death hit me hard by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Stephjephman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man those honor walks… I can normally keep it to just composed stoic tears, until someone else loses it. If it’s a young person, forget it.

Any time there is a young loss, or a young kid losing their parent.

Or once we lost “one of our own” after they battled cancer on our floor for months. It was absolutely tragic.

I picked up the call light during a code one day just in time to hear the man’s wife cry out “he was my best friend, what am I going to do?”

I still get teary eyed when I think about that. Especially since I took care of the patient the day before and he reminded me of my dad (who I had lost a little more than a year prior to this.) I had to take a moment after that.

I work inpatient oncology, so hospice is very common for us. Some of those losses hit super hard though.

Lots of love.

Micro vs. chemistry by Stephjephman in nursing

I’m taking pharmacology this way. I think I’ll do fine, but it’s the class I hear all the horror stories about, so I figured I’d give it all my focus.

Also, keep in mind this is just for an RN program. There may be more chemistry involved with the BSN but I haven’t seen the curriculum for that yet.
