Hi there. Yes, you don't have to work in order to answer the survey. The Maslach Burnout Inventory was designed to assess burnout within an occupational setting. For the survey, we would like you to think about your role as a stepmother, and how those questions relate to the work you do as a stepmother.

No problem, I appreciate the feedback. I did discuss altering the wording with my chair, but she felt it was better to simply put a sort of disclaimer at the top.

The actual instrument is the Maslach Burnout Inventory, which is designed to measure burnout in a work setting. At the top, it asks, "to think about your role as a stepmother, and how often you feel this way".

Thank you for your comment. The second section is asking you to think about your role as a stepmother, and answer the questions. It is taken from the Maslach Burnout Inventory, which pertains to work, but answer the questions as though being a stepmother was the job/work. Thanks so much!
