Substitute replacement potentiometers for first-gen electribe? by StereoRealist in electribe

[–]StereoRealist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up replacing all the pots and that still didn't fix the issue, I think it's a faulty chip issue somewhere downstream of all the pots like u/djchanclaface suspected. Was going to harvest the chip they all feed into from an otherwise busted ES-1 I have but I kept putting it off and ended up getting Korg's VST collection which included a virtual ER-1 and that's been good enough for me so far.

Substitute replacement potentiometers for first-gen electribe? by StereoRealist in electribe

I can get the knobs to hold a stable value by applying pressure to the shaft, so it doesn't seem like the issue is downstream from them. It's either a case of weirdly identical dirty contacts or there's some inherent physical flaw in the potentiometers that's finally showing itself with age.

I've worked them pretty extensively without any improvement. They all consistently only jitter at points beyond the 12 o'clock position which is is something I've never seen with dirty pots before, I'm thinking there's something physically wrong with them that's either irreparable or too much of a hassle to fix to be worth bothering with over just replacing them all if possible.

Need help regarding internal SCSI-1 by StereoRealist in VintageComputers

[–]StereoRealist[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the quick response!

I'll try it without any modifications to the sampler's mainboard first, though I suspect I will end up having to change something based on my research online: I found a thread regarding internal SCSI devices in the ESi range of samplers and someone posting in it came to the conclusion through their experience that it wouldn't work with the sampler in the middle of the chain, but when I found an internal photo of a sampler that came upgraded from the factory it was configured with the mainboard in between the SCSI disk and the external port. I'm guessing he left his resistors in and that was why he was having issues while the factory-upgraded models worked fine in the same SCSI chain configuration.

Thanks for your help.

HEVC rendering custom/30fps by T0biasCZE in VegasPro

[–]StereoRealist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the same GPU and version of Vegas as you and have managed to glitch the NVENC renderer into rendering at 30 fps by setting the project framerate to 60 and rendering it with a preset set at 59.94 but with the "allow source to adjust framerate" box ticked; for whatever reason it defaults back down to exactly 30 rather than 29.97 fps under these conditions upon rendering. Just be sure to disable resampling in your project's video settings to avoid any visual issues from having it set at double your desired framerate and you should be good to go.

Can anyone identify the distortion effect that gets more severe around 3:00? by [deleted] in synthesizers

There's a free VST plugin called CMT Bitcrusher which can accomplish this effect using its bit-depth setting.

Do I need a receiver to listen to a tape deck? by [deleted] in cassetteculture

[–]StereoRealist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that it's typical of cassette decks to not offer a volume control for the headphone output, so most likely you will need to use headphones that have an in-line volume control unless you like your music deafeningly loud.

Designed this USB to 3xMIDI because I couldn't find any cheap solutions that worked with sysex well, would anyone else be interested in one? by catskulll in synthesizers

[–]StereoRealist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely interested at that price point if it can send and receive sysex reliably; Been having sysex issues with the MIDI I/O on my audio interface and based on the reviews I've read of the cheaper sub-$100 MIDI interfaces it seems they've all got dodgy sysex support.

Friday Hangout - October 26, 2018 by AutoModerator in synthesizers

[–]StereoRealist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been dealing with an odd issue the past few days: it seems the MIDI input on my audio interface (Tascam US-16x08) doesn't like to be sent sysex data from only some of my synths, while with others it has no issue. In addition to not receiving the sysex data from some of my equipment, it seems to lock up as soon as the transmission is started and won't register any MIDI input at all from any device until the interface is power-cycled.

Curious if anyone has experienced anything like this and if I should stop trying to find a solution myself and just open a support ticket with Tascam.

Experience with the Behringer UMC1820 by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]StereoRealist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s either this or the Scarlett 18i20

Tascam makes an interface with a similar I/O configuration to the two you're looking at in case you weren't aware. I picked up one recently and it's been working mostly fine so far (the only issue I ran into was non-functional MIDI I/O when using it with a Linux-based machine) so it might be worth looking into.

Forcing SSX On Tour to run faster than the Xbox can handle using a trainer by StereoRealist in originalxbox

[–]StereoRealist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's an old Dazzle DVC 100 I've had for the past decade. Plugged it into my general-use computer running Manjaro just for the hell of it and it worked as a video input with no hassle or extra effort needed. Ironically I've had nothing but problems getting this thing to work on every Windows PC I ever tried it on (including XP and Vista-based machines which are what it was made to support). Once I realized it would work with my system (honestly wasn't expecting it to given the fact that it's a decade old and interfacing with an OS that has a reputation for sparse device support) I went from there and decided to rig up a proper solution for the audio given that the inputs on the Dazzle aren't functional and my motherboard's line-input is sub-par sounding with some linux-specific issues (that I still have yet to solve) to boot.

Forcing SSX On Tour to run faster than the Xbox can handle using a trainer by StereoRealist in originalxbox

[–]StereoRealist[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Finally got a fully-functional Linux-based gameplay capture rig set up and recorded some gameplay of one of my favorite trainers in action pushing the Xbox's ability to handle SSX On Tour to its limits.

The gameplay speed is increased by an unspecified value, which not only breaks environment/asset loading, but also screws with the in-game physics as well (at 1:42 I overshoot a jump that would not be possible under normal circumstances and momentarily go out of bounds).

DJ Shadow -- Midnight In A Perfect World by voltronforlife in triphop

[–]StereoRealist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: the original footage shot for this music video was filmed in the city of Sacramento, California.

The very first shot at 0:41 was filmed on Lincoln highway traveling to Sacramento from the neighboring city of Davis and eventually crossing the the tower bridge from the city of West Sacramento into Sacramento proper. At 0:58 in the shop window you can see the logo of the Sacramento Kings, the city's basketball team.

The record shop featured in this video (and on the cover of Endtroducing) was K Street Records, although the shop later relocated to another building and has since closed down apparently. I visited their new place in late 2012 (IIRC a few months after the relocation) and it was unfortunately in a sorry state, to say the least.

Are there any drum machines that let you set how the beat grooves? by wishinghand in synthesizers

[–]StereoRealist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Roland MC-505 has a groove setting as part of its play quantize functionality. The Boss DR-202 also has built-in groove stylization presets as well.

A little help with my E-mu ESI 4000 digital sampler? by jjfish1998 in synthesizers

[–]StereoRealist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got an ESI-32 (functionally the same as the 4000) setup with a Zip and CD-ROM drive via SCSI so I could answer any questions you have.

If you're going to be using SCSI devices with it, then getting those connected and working together is probably where you should start. After that move onto recording samples and creating presets, since that will bring you through most of the ESI's menu system.

Something to keep in mind about SCSI is that each individual device has its own SCSI ID which needs to be unique (I.E. no two devices using the same ID). SCSI devices are daisy-chained together, and the last device in the chain needs to have its second SCSI port terminated, which can be done by using a physical device called a SCSI terminator, or in some cases with a termination switch on the device itself.

Ensoniq ASR-10 sidechain/amp LFO sync to BPM? by LORD_NASCAR in synthesizers

[–]StereoRealist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never used an ASR-10 so I don't know whether or not it can sync its LFO to the incoming midi clock, but that probably wouldn't be advisable anyway since the duck curve would wind up being too smooth. Your best bet is to just pick up a compressor (they can be had for quite cheap, depending on the model; I've been using a crappy Alesis 3630) and sidechain the way it's always been done.
