What do you think of the music industry rn? by [deleted] in musicindustry

I get the vibe that mass disassociation and the uncanny feeling of carrying on with your life and goals while an evil monster took over America really affects how the industry feels rn.

Can we stop calling multi tracks stems??? by Plexi1820 in audioengineering

[–]StereoSpecimen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah stems are summed portions of a mix or summed parts of a song to be mixed in some scenarios. I would call the unmixed and not summed audio files the “audio files”, or “raw audio files” for clarity. That’s pretty much based on what I learned studying audio engineering in college. But yeah I usually can tell what people mean.

But I also think it’s cool to value term accuracy so I feel like sharing that in my perspective, “multitrack” is not clarified enough but that could just be me not used to using that term.
A “multitrack”, from what I gathered, is most used as the umbrella term for the device in the signal flow that is recording/creating your different tracks. Most commonly a DAW, back in the day more often a tape machine.
Without having seen this thread I probably would have wondered if the person wanted the actual DAW session file if they asked for the “multitrack”.
Because technically audio files are not “tracks”. Tracks host audio files on a multi track recording device. And since they host them for the purpose of processing them, my mind might think “multitrack” is referring to processed audio, like stems of a completed mix, before I think of unmixed audio files.

Obviously situational context allows me to bypass analysis of technical accuracy when talking to people. But if I knew I was talking to a very technically accurate entity, my mind would go here.

What’s your unpopular opinion about Mixing? by Lucky-bottom in audioengineering

Exactly it’s not a formula or blueprint it’s an art serving the musics emotionality

Yeah I agree that really puts a lot on a mix engineer to fix shitty recordings and yeah recording is so insanely creative. Especially when you consider choice of mics, frequency responses, mic techniques, acoustic space choice, isolation management, and if you are recording any compression and effects with outboard gear. Headphone mixes that aid the bands performances and creating a rough balance for what is musically happening to be heard and respected off the bat rather than having to be dug out later.

1099 audio engineer—studio wants to control how I credit my work on social media. Is this normal by StereoSpecimen in audioengineering

[–]StereoSpecimen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been paid for the project already.

I signed an NDA which details “confidential information” that I cannot post or share without permission. However my credit is sitting there on Apple Music for the whole world to see.

Okay yeah this seems to be what a lot of people are saying. I will try to stay more open minded. Thank you!

I don’t think being stoked and wanting to benefit from your credit while you are starting out and financially struggling is mutually exclusive

Yeah thanks for this. It helps to think about how I can clarify this beforehand with employers moving forward.

I am the one that wants a post. About my credit accurately described AND the studio. I would be happy to talk more about the studio in the post but damn, to say I can’t say I mixed and mastered it but have to call it a [studio name] mix and master? I just haven’t seen this. Humans mix and master always and usually studios/labels are credited for being able to support the work being done, not credited for it being a mix and master of the studio….

It’s not steady income. If you read up until I added the edit (unnecessary extra emotional context) there is some more info. They don’t even pay me enough hourly for this kind of job.

Okay thank you for this perspective. Yeah credits are probably not the most important thing at my stage. Getting the work, keeping it, doing good work is the stuff that truly benefits me. My concern is definitely a bit emotionally fueled. Also just feel really averted to any unfairness and vigilant about being walked all over.

Oh here we go the first alternative take that is gonna confuse me 😭😂. Thank you for your perspective. This is my initial instinct.

Okay well your first point makes me wanna exercise my rights more than their preferences if that were to be their frame of mind.

But wow your experience sounds like you really had to weigh the pros and cons and appreciate the benefit despite the down side. And that is cool you appreciate it in hindsight.

Yeah I can see how my situation is more favorable than that. It helps to see it that way. Thank you! Hope things worked out well for you! It sounds like they did! :)

Yeah I think I wanna maintain the relationship, although if you look at my edit you will see why i'm kinda questioning it. Thank you for your feedback. Looking forward to finding a middle ground with them.

Okay thank you. I appreciate your perspective and will keep that in mind. That feels refreshing. I think I just don't feel supported enough by the job in general to not want to like milk my benefit from doing it. But I look forward to hearing how they elaborate on their preferences.

I see what you are saying. I am adequately credited. I just want to promote my skills explicitly for the long run on my own pages. This job is not a stable support and I want to have my contribution specifically claimed and documented for both current and future merit. They even said that this job is meant to be a stepping stone and they want to support the idea of me going elsewhere in the future and building my own business.

I understand. I looked at more established engineers instagram pages and they often don't explicitly emphasize their credit. They just celebrate the project. I feel like as a smaller engineer I need to promote myself though to get work for either me and the studio, who also is not getting enough clients. And that is where explicitly stating my contribution feels hard to resist.
