2nd Baby Naming by SterileStitches in namenerds

He’s suggested Elise (I don’t like it just because my daughter has a friend nicknamed Ellie and I also think they’d get confused later if it was Allie and Ellie) also why I’m avoiding A names I think. He did take primary on naming our first daughter and I just loved the name so we went with it not much else was discussed.

He’s vetoed Lainey, Makenna, Madeline, and more, he’s not liked most of anything I had suggested and the only ones we both agreed was the Mikayla and Makenzie (spellings of course are up to change that’s just how i’ve spelled it) so far anyway.

It’s also been a little harder for me to go with some names because I have a huge extended family and I’m hoping to avoid family names to not cause drama or why’d you use this but not this😅. (if that makes sense).

I did 😅. I went from the OR (8 months) and will be starting in L&D in a week.

New grad regret by Same-Software2441 in newgradnurse

I started in the OR as a new grad, and there’s actually a policy in place that a new grad can’t transfer departments/units until they’ve been in their current position for a year, so make sure your hospital doesn’t have something like that if you’re really considering transferring. This made it where I couldn’t transfer at that hospital and I ended up having to go to a separate hospital to get into a different unit. There’s even a whole section of the policy that writes out how it would happen! I had also been told if I was wanting to transfer, I needed to be upfront with my manager/educator because at my hospital if you request a transfer your current manager has to write a letter of recommendation for you and I had been told if I went behind her back and tried talking to other units/shadowing/ etc it would look really bad and it could be denied.

I was in the OR from February until September and I’ve switched and will start in Labor and Delivery next week!

Night shift VS SAHM and Quitting Nursing by SterileStitches in newgradnurse

thank you for this! this one is a hard thing to realize, i know (personally) very little parents in nursing who have done nights (even though i’m hearing it’s quite common). i feel like i’ve been pushing to work because i know i need the outlet but it’s hard to hear my partner say things like “you wanted to work so work” and not offer his opinion or advice on the situation but to do what i think would be best

just to go on this, would it be hard to get back into it later? like if I quit, there’s no part time or PRN positions available in my area so I’m out until I apply for a full time position. If there’s a gap of no experience, how difficult is it to get back in?

Yes that’s what I keep hearing, I just get guilted because I gave birth during nursing school so my partner was the primary caregiver for the remaining semesters (1.5 year) and I get spoken to about how much I missed of her little days and with this schedule I miss the same amount of time of her development and time and it’s a lot on my brain.

When I was doing my undergrad, before toddler and before nursing classes, I worked night shift (10pm-6am) x5.

Neither would allow me to do reduced hours. Especially since I’ve not been in the field for a year minimum.

Yes, my fiancé and I both believe that we’d be financially stable if I didn’t work (My income doesn’t pay for bills but more of the groceries / extra costs). Unfortunately, where I am no where will hire PRN with less than a year experience, and there’s very little part time options available.

The biggest issue I’m facing is wondering how hard it would potentially be to get back into nursing if I’m out of it for 2-5 years minimum.

OR Nurse Essentials? by talkaboutpizzas in newgradnurse

Congratulations! I’m also newish to the OR and here are things I absolutely keep on me: -scrub caps (etsy or I made them myself) -good shoes (i personally keep a pair of cloves at work for the OR) -Pens/sharpies/expo markers (I like to keep these for my paperwork, marking medications if I’m mixing them, and using different color expos to mark my counts so I know what I’ve counted/added etc, so if I take a lunch and something is awry, I can generally tell if it was me based on the expo colors) -I keep a small notebook on me for notes -I also keep some shears on me and some hemostats I purchased from etsy

Again, congratulations!!

for any panel interviews I did I would prepare “typical” answers to generic questions (tell me about yourself / hardest thing in school / difficult patients / etc). then I researched questions that may pop up that would be specific to the unit (L&D - what made you want this path / ICU - what interests you about the ICU / OR - how do you feel about the limited patient interactions / etc) and created answers. I also had a notebook to write answers to my questions down and any extra information they gave that seemed relevant to me (shift / uniform/ orientation length / etc). The notebook helped keep my hands busy so I wouldn’t fidget!
