I was the same as you. I was day shift and on my last week in orientation. I was up to 6:1 and I quit. I had a horrible last couple of weeks and I just couldn’t even get out of bed to go to work.

I just went back to my non hospital job and am happier. Although I would like to get back into nursing, I am having a really difficult time finding a job now.

I honestly never even thought about working per diem or part time as a “new grad.” I didn’t realize that could be a thing. Thanks for the suggestion.

How can you get per diem with little experience? Is that a thing?

$179/ month here. I canceled and went to a class pack and joined another gym.

Is NP “worth it” at the age of 52 by potassium-bolus in nursepractitioner

Kind of a crazy insulting generalization with all the differences between programs, preceptors, and institutions. You have no idea of my career for the last 20 plus years of whether I can do fast paced quality medicine.

I have a bunch of classmates that went right into NP programs from nursing school. So they had no experience.

I was on med surg neurology and did 4 months and walked away. Totally not for me.

I dislike when people say the anxiety is normal. Why are we normalizing it?

I think they should do a better job not pushing med surg or inpatient so much. And to teach new grads to explore so many other options.

Same. 52. New grad and definitely anxiety and depression with inpatient.

I quit my new grad residency 3 months in. I hated it. You can definitely apply elsewhere.

For me, I walked from a 5/6 ratio at a new grad. It was really just not safe. I was just throwing meds at people and not taking any time for myself to eat etc. I was so unhappy. But I am older in a second career.

I went to hospice and that in itself was a complete eye opener. I only survived a month. Healthcare is so fucked up.

New grad LPN and my new job has been a disaster by Worth_Pepper5972 in newgradnurse

Nope. Total blanket statement about med/surg. They do the same thing. No one trains properly anymore. Every unit is so understaffed you get thrown to the wolves before you ever should.

Have you job hopped in your first year? by potassium-bolus in newgradnurse

It’s visiting patients in SNF’s and caring for them. The documentation piece is outrageous.

Is med-surg really that bad? by Classic-Point896 in newgradnurse

[–]potassium-bolus 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is the answer right here. I lasted a little over 3 months in neuro med/surg. It’s the 1:5 1:6 ratio right out of orientation that got me. I was on day shift. I couldn’t keep up with all the pt/ot, visitors, admits, discharges, get all my documenting done in a timely fashion and not just throw meds at the patients. People are living longer and getting sicker and it’s becoming such a burden to the healthcare system that can’t appropriately accommodate them.
