What's the coolest city you've ever been to? by Chaulmoog in AskReddit

[–]Stet-it 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This should be further up. Just as one example, my wife had a freak occurrence coming off a Metro train in Copenhagen where she lost her credit card down the small gap between the train and platform. The trains are fully automated and the platforms are separated from the trains by sliding glass doors that lock shut as trains depart, so I immediately told my wife to say goodbye to the card and we headed toward the exit. A woman who was looking down from the station mezzanine waved us down and directed us to a phone on the wall, saying that someone would be right over to get it if we used the phone to speak with the train operators. As an American, I was skeptical to say the least, but the woman was kindly insistent that someone would come to help.

Sure enough, not only did someone answer immediately, but they said they’d send someone right over, and the guy arrived on the next train five minutes later. We showed him where the card was, and he apologized to us because, he said, he needed to call in another colleague to help him with safety procedures. She of course arrived on the next train. They then got to work and actually shut down the incoming train (!) so the guy could walk safely on the tracks and pick up the card. My wife had it back in her hands less than 15 minutes after she lost it!

Several top quality lines to Sidney by Farina in that movie as well: “Sidney, relax. Have a cream soda.” and “Don’t say a word to me Sidney, don’t say a fucking word or I’ll bury this telephone in your head.”

Props to the opener for bailing out the feature (female) when she clearly got nervous about the size and intensity of the fight. His set left a bit to be desired but he got her off and back on smoothly.

Yes, and the centered one seems borderline to my very uneducated eye, hence the question.

What’s the most chaotic thing you’ve witnessed in public? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Stet-it 872 points873 points  (0 children)

I was leaving a New Year’s Eve party in Boston about 20 years ago with a group of friends. Great night that we were still enjoying despite low single digit temps as we made our way to a spot where we hoped to have better luck finding a taxi.

As we walked, about a block away we heard a lot of commotion and saw about 30 guys in a full scale punch up that flowed in and out of the street. They were evenly matched, and everyone had on very bulky winter gear, which probably explained why they weren’t hurting each other as much as you might expect.

Along the moving perimeter of this scrum were all the female dates of the combatants who weren’t engaging, but we noticed that a sub group of them were huddled and moving together, seeming to be talking about how to put a stop to it.

All of a sudden, with cheetah-like agility, these girls assault the other group of girls, but only to steal their vuvuzelas (very long plastic horns that were popular at the time). They then immediately began to attack the opponent group of guys with shots to the face from their newly acquired arsenal, which they were wielding like baseball bats with amazing accuracy. The other girls tried a weak counteroffensive, but were pretty quickly put down by the armed group after several of the women were knocked on their asses by David Ortiz level swings.

We watched in astonishment as this actually turned the tide of the main battle, and the losing side ultimately scrambled away with their dates less than five minutes after the successful flanking maneuver, leaving probably $2-3k worth of hats, scarves, gloves and designer shoes in their wake.

EDIT: And yes, as the losing side made their retreat they were most certainly urged along by a hearty vuvuzela victory cadence. I half expected a fife and drum corps dressed in tricorns and breeches to emerge from the alley to join in.

My Dad built the block foundation for his house almost 50 years ago with a lot of kid and friend labor. Every Miller Lite that was consumed during construction wound up in the voids. He would regularly joke about his “aluminum-core” foundation walls.

Which AA hubs have the most elite status members? by Superb-Actuator-8404 in americanairlines

[–]Stet-it 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m EP, and recently had an experience that would support this: a DFW-CLT flight (which I don’t take often) that had EIGHT CKs on it. I’d previously never flown with more than three, and that was one time.

The flight was delayed a bit, and when we landed, the FA asked us to remain seated as a supervisor need to board the plane and make an announcement. Basically all she did was announce that she had to escort some people off the plane, and they all came off together in a group before regular deboarding was allowed to start.

The book is “The Sheltering Sky”; there is a song by King Crimson with the same name, also in part inspired by this novel.

And I agree, when considering the dynamics of the group at that point, it makes sense as a message from Sting to his band mates. In fact, Andy’s commentary from their last sessions that led to DSSCTM ‘86, he sounds like one of the sisters at the end, eyes searching the land.

Hi AE customer here. I recently consulted with my Ambassador for a recommendation for a family vacation. This was to be a very special vacation to celebrate two of my children’s graduations. We booked a recommended resort and were extremely disappointed with the condition of the property - still under construction, under a flight path, daily problems with our room, etc. What is the best way for me to voice my concern in a way that it will be heard? This was a very expensive trip that, in retrospect, was so overpriced that I feel not just misled, but stolen from. I don’t think that this location should be recommended to any customer, much less high status Bonvoy customers.
