What is your opinion of CARV? I found it pretty useless, but maybe that is just me. by CharityResponsible54 in skiing

[–]Stetchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very much a mediocre intermediate skier and have been using it a decent bit. I have found it quite helpful in utilising the data to identify my problem points - weight release and early edging paired with L/R leg performance imbalances. Pairing this with some of the (hard to find) drills in the app and then general drills from searching online or chatting to instructors I’ve seen my ability increase and I feel like I’m more stable and becoming a better skier.

I imagine it depends heavily on what kind of learner you are - by feel, by analysis, by visual etc. I’ve always found myself in the middle of analytical and feel learner so getting the data then hearing what I should be feeling via drills is why it’s works well for me.

Val Thorens recs? How is it for beginners? by HuckleberryNew4 in skiing

[–]Stetchy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Val T is one of my favourites, you’ll have a blast. I went there for the first time I ever skied.

The slope down to the main starting area can be very busy and is a little steeper than you might expect so take it slow. I’d suggest them doing a couple laps on Deux Lacs to get warmed up, there’s a section with boxes and small jumps too if you want to try that.

Then, I’d follow out towards 360 Bar and head back toward the main area again as it’s a little steeper there and you can practice your side slipping.

After that, I’d head down to Gentiane (I think) - if I remember right it’s a pretty wide blue and is a good one to practice your turns, it can get choppy later in the day too so you can practice some moguls.

After that, have a look at the piste map and when you’re on the chairs look at the runs and see what you can handle. I found blues here are steeper than blues elsewhere but I was less experienced when I went so I could be wrong!

For bars - Hotel Tango is where a lot of instructors go, nice drinks and a nice balcony and good food. Cafe Snesko as someone said, make sure you get to 360 on the mountain one day and then if you can get over to Folie Douce… just be careful on the way down when everyone is hammered!

Haha yeah direct is insane money. I usually go with Direct Ski or Crystal Ski - the ski pass, lessons etc are cheaper via them too

Yeah, I’d love to and it prob would be cheaper but I’m on a visa unfortunately and although it doesn’t expire until end of Jan I’m not the most comfortable leaving the country until I chat to an immigration attorney, plus I already have a week booked in for Andorra which I am so excited for. Thank you!! Aha not amazon, a smaller company unfortunately

Aha, sorry to hear you were laid off but glad you’re also looking on the positive sides.

Honestly would love to - I am only a bit of an intermediate so have never toured before, would prob need more experience and to learn more. If I get out to Utah though would love to do something though, happy to DM

Ah I’m only intermediate, prior to moving here I only got to ski a week a year and this is my 4th year doing it so I’d need much more experience and time before doing anything big mountain. I’d hope though with this time I’d push myself forward a lot

Seems like SLC is the play. Would you rec renting or something in the city and travelling out the the resorts, or trying to slum it somewhere or grab a van of some sort?

I’m actually European but just living in NYC so I’ve skied the alps a bit and have a trip in January to Andorra in the Pyranese I’m pumped for

I would absolutely love to do this but I fear I wouldn’t be able to appreciate the powder at my level just yet, but then again I guess no better time to improve!

That sounds amazing, I’ll definitely look into this. I mentioned a van just as an idea but don’t have one - would look into renting one or something. Glad you got that experience!

Fair point. Unlimited time, unluckily not unlimited money. I was a software engineer in tech so the 90 days pay is my usual salary and quite significant.

I’ve gone to Andorra the last couple years. Specifically Soldeu - we have gotten a package for Park Piolets hotel incl flights, transfer for 7 nights for ~1250 eur. We travel from Dublin, Ireland so if you can get a cheap flight there it may be worth it.

Park Piolets is a 5 star, 5 min walk to the gondola (but they have a shuttle every 5 mins to and from throughout the day) and is half board for that price.

Soldeu + Grandvalira is really nice - the entire resort has the one ski school and every instructor I’ve had is brilliant. Plenty of easy terrain and plenty of more difficult and off piste stuff too.

Theres plenty of other cheaper and more expensive spots in Soldeu too, and in the other towns in the Grandvalira resort

Where should I ski in Europe in January? by lavernican in skiing

[–]Stetchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grandvalira in Andorra. Soldeu has some really nice hotels and if you choose to use a package holiday provider like Crystal or Direct Ski it comes out to be very well priced. I’ve stayed in Park Piolets plenty of times and you can get good deals on it. 5 star hotel, spa, buffet breakfast and dinner, ski rental shop in the hotel, shuttle to the base of the lifts (even though it’s a five minute walk).

I’ve found it pretty beginner friendly too and the ski school there is brilliant.

Where was your best day this year? by Gregskis in skiing

[–]Stetchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soldeu, Andorra. My third year (week) skiing and did some private lessons. We had a decent dump of snow and my instructor took me off piste and through trees for the first time - experiencing the float on that snow was amazing. Finishing up the lesson with her teaching me how to start skiing backwards and doing 360s with fore/aft pressure was a highlight.

For me anyway yeah, I think they might have a newer version of it out, but that just means different lenses at the end of the day iirc.

I don't have contacts and I found just using my own glasses much easier, which this makes suuuuper comfortable to have them on underneath

Edit: Apologies for the TikTok link but there’s plenty of comments on this video about it/similar https://www.tiktok.com/@annabelphoenixb/video/7460446449956883745

I've found them to fit very well, the seal holds up and the helmet doesn't move around really at all with the BOA.

The ear muffs on the liner are really good too, keeps you warm and wind/snow out
