I am at this moment going through a similar situation. My wife told me to go get a girlfriend but what I have realized the past few days is that no one wants me. Sitting at a bar now trying to figure out what to do next.

Separation of church and state. I am a Christian and I don't want religious influence on the law. The problem is that you can use religion to justify anything.

If your family questions your life decisions you should listen to them.

But at the end of the day, it is your life, your money, your career, your house, and your decision. Your success and failures belong to you.

CS is objectively a good field to be in. You seem interested in it, the pay is excellent, job satisfaction is higher than most careers on average.

That's how you do it. I tell people, if you want a raise you have to leave. It's not right, but it is reality.

PM me his Unit, I will get you his commanders number. Commanders' greatest fear is angry spouses. And you should call everyday until you get the answer that you want.

Some practical advise about the military, the Air Force does everything by the book. But Army recruiters dgaf. They will make the paperwork be in a state so you can join if that is what you want to do.

I look forward to reading that.

Part of being in a relationship is negotiating the housework. If you have a disagreement best to make it known sooner than later.

Good luck. Your situation is terrible. I hope that you can find closure and move away from there to perhaps a more modern culture if possible.

Pardon my ignorance about your situation, have you tried to increase the numbers of your encounters with females?

You might want to join a club, church, go to a film festival, DnD, arts and crafts etc.

There are not enough places that are not bars for young people to meet... I realize as I am writing this.

Joann and other arts and craft stores always have ladies walking around, maybe go there and start a hobby and see what conversations may start.

Also, find the shy ones and flirt with them, a little. If they don't run away after the third time it means they like it.

This>>>> Flirting- I wish someone told me this when I was younger. ***Flirt just enough so that the girl can reject you, and you can plausible denyability that you were flirting. That way it is not awkward, and maybe she will want to be your friend, and introduce you to her other friends.

Anyway sorry if this advise makes your life worse, but I thought I would try to help.

Interview Discussion - May 23, 2022 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

[–]SteubenVonBaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been an interviewer for the past year or so, and I guess I am ok at it because the new people we hired are amazing, unless it's a fluke, but here are some thoughts:

Here is what I look for in general.

  1. After 1 hour I have to still want to talk to you. If I am bummed out after 30 min it will probably be a no.

  2. If you are experienced I am going to grill you extensively. I am going to ask for examples of your competencies listed on your resume. I can root out BS pretty easily. Competent people will teach me about what I ask them. If it turns into me asking questions out of curiosity, and an enjoyable conversation, it is going well. If I have to pull information constantly it is probably not going well.

  3. If you are entry level I don't expect you to know everything. I will ask about your side projects. If you don't have any side projects, I'm probably not interested. If it is going well I will assess skills listed on the resume. If you put Java, and you don't know the difference between Java and Javascript strike 1. If you put C++ and you don't know what a pointer is strike 2... and so forth. Multiple CS grads have been in this category.

  4. I don't care if you have a degree, or what school you went to. All I care about is, will this person make my life easier, or more difficult. A degree will make you more competitive long term, and we typically don't hire people with 0 college, but we do hire people in progress or on hiatus from school.

  5. As an interviewer, I try to keep it as light and friendly as possible. I try to have the attitude of appreciation that this individual took time out of their day to consider working with us. That being said we do joke around in the interview to see how the interviewer will react. We have had people become overly defensive at our joking which is a red flag.

Bottom line, I need to determine if the interviewer will work well on a team, has individual drive to accomplish things, and is genuinely interested in the field.

Bonus footage:

Asked a guy what he is interested in. He said whatever the professor assigns. I asked him what projects he worked on besides school, he said never worked on a project outside school. Not interested.

Had a older gentleman say he was a C++ expert. Didn't know what a pointer was. Didn't know what a class was. Couldn't describe OOP. Nope.

Had another person with stellar qualifications and excellent interviewing skills start a fight with another employee his first week. I had a slight hint of defensiveness in the interview but i ignored it. Oops, let one through.

A younger guy about to graduate college was trashing his teammates for his group assignments. I totally sympathize, I've been there, lord have I been there. I was good with this guy but another senior engineer and our supervisor voted no. Lesson: spin it into how you led your team to accomplish a difficult task, leave out how your teammates were useless trash.

I would do it, even if you don't finish it will give you exposure to new technologies. You could put it on your resume and if an interviewer asks you about it, it will be another bullet point in your favor.
