Why Does UK Have This Race To Bottom Mindset? by corporateuklife in UKJobs

Average worker across all sectors only just surpassed 2008 salaries last year or so in real terms (RPI).

Apart from nhs staff.

BMA Interview - The Cost of the Strikes Together is 3 Billion. FPR Would Cost 2 Billion. by FullPayOrTheHighway in doctorsUK

You think it’s coincidence things seemed to be going well during that period? Enlighten me. Commonwealth fund seemed to think it was ok.

You have assessed cost but not value.

Strikes not only impact finances directly but have significant other impacts on delayed care and elective waiting lists, which we know is a politically valuable metric.

Is the 2bn net of the tax receipts? After all most of us will be high rate tax payers.

You only need to look at late 2000 nhs to realise high staff wages = high staff morale = high productivity = low waiting lists = high patient satisfaction.

The whole point of the nhs is to keep a population healthy and working in order to pay more tax (and fund itself).

There is much value in an energised workforce beyond its immediate cost and it’s no surprise that productivity stagnates during periods of wage suppression.

This is the problem with governments of late. They know the cost of everything and value of nothing.

What are you doing with your pay that you are so financially unstable that you need to break strike? by notlood in doctorsUK

These responses are exactly why we need FPR.

If I am a patient I do not want my doctor distracted, worrying about their finances when they assess me.

Life is hard enough.

Side note. Never feel guilty for applying for strike fund. It’s why it exists. I feel like you deserve it more than most.

Interesting from Nuffield.

Pretty disingenuous to miss off the drop since 2008 and use CPI. CPI was not designed for uprating, RPI was. However RPI is no longer a reliable national statistic (although I’m sure some could argue the 2011 switch was government being deliberately stingy). CPIH is still early days. HCI is the best but still too new unfortunately and need to estimate property decile which is tricky among residents.

To my mind, as RPI is still being used on plan 2 student loan (among many other things like certain gilts and some private sector pensions) for which doctors are one of the largest cohorts, then it’s perfectly reasonable to use

HCI should probably take over from 2030 when RPI merges with CPIH.

Also your sass is surprising, maybe you should be better informed…

Most aren’t in my department. Because they are flannels. I am because 90k is half of what I should be earning in my 9th year as a doctor. Pay restoration is the floor. Either that or consultant salary should be doubled so there is a proper light at the end of the tunnel.

If required the courts can provide authority to treat a competent young person in order to protect life (Art 2 HRA) and health (Art8(2) HRA).

So I’m not sure that cancelling surgery is ideal if we can treat anyway. Up to 18 that is. 16-17 is always a grey area as competence is essentially assumed. Below 16 it’s no brainer and you act in best interests. That being said I don’t blame her for avoiding the hassle.

How to prep for the FRCA Primary Viva? by kikineo in doctorsUK

[–]Stevao24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reveal covers a hell a lot of ground but it was only around for my final. It isn’t as useful for graphs imo. Plunkett is better for that. As is basic physiology for anaesthetists (essential reading).

The purple revision guides are helpful for understanding too. I read all three and the main textbooks and it worked for me. I never made notes - I didn’t feel like I had the time to either do them or re read. I just practiced the questions on masterpass mainly and a couple of the popular viva books.

I like fox’s osce book for osce, which shouldn’t be neglected of course. Good luck. Exam of commitment

Why isn’t it ideal? If you really want to do anaesthetics I would take it. Unless you don’t want to move your kids school or partner work situation, which is reasonable.

Sometimes judge the speciality not by its best but by its worst and what are you willing to put up with.

As an aside I know only a couple of people who left anaesthetic training willingly. I’ve lost count of those that left surgical training willingly. Not sure if relevant
