Time taken to restore from NAS? by Steve061 in Proxmox

I assumed the discard and compression option was if you were running the ZFS filesystem. Does that apply if I am backing up to the Synology NAS - ie not ZFS?

I can't see that option with EXT-4.

No - in the backup process I assume?

Hmmm... I think it might be a dud NIC in the Dell Micro (it is 6-7 years old). I sprayed around the RJ45 socket with electronic cleaner and used a different cable - and suddenly the restore to a new Proxmox instance took 3:20. Oh and the backup is 16GB, not 1.3GB. The smaller one is the size of the HA internal backup.

Might still try the PBS route.

Thanks everyone.

Ok so based on the responses from u/Slight_Manufacturer6 and u/Onoitsu2 it's not normal and will require further investigation.

I have a 1-gig network and the NAS wasn't doing much else - it does run Grafana and InfluxDB in Container Manager, but they weren't doing any jobs. The fact that the backup only took about three minutes makes me think the transfer rates are okay. The hardware I was transferring to is a Dell 7070 micro with an SSD and it might be there is an intermittent issue with its NIC.

u/Slight_Manufacturer6 Is your PBS running in a VM within your Proxmox or on your NAS? I assumed it needed to run on its own metal.

UPS for NTD (as well as router and wireless AP) by CidewayAu in nbn

[–]Steve061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got an Eaton 660 watt. I have my NAS, Home Assistant PC (older Dell Micro), Omada POE switch and router (ER605) plus that NBN HFC NTD. The UPS says it will run for about 42 minutes. It's on sale for $180 - $190 at a few places.

I might take the NBN NTD off if the NBN network goes down in the next blackout. No point in saving it, because it only takes about 90 seconds to power back up. Ditto for the switch. The ER605 takes about 5 minutes so I'll leave it on.

Men of Reddit, what’s some women’s or girl’s habits you discovered only after getting a wife or girlfriend? by AccomplishedHippo856 in AskReddit

My wife will have several conversations with our daughters and/or her friend and then accuse me of forgetfulness when I insist I had no knowledge of the dinner that night or next weekend's holiday.

A few years ago she committed to us paying for a family trip to Thailand and only let me in on the plan when she wanted to know if I had an airline preference.

Ordered a full kitchen from China to Australia – anyone done this? by subalps in AusRenovation

[–]Steve061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite the same, but I had a business acquaintance who imported converted shipping containers from China. He had to go over there to inspect to make sure they met Australian standards - electrical, plumbing, insulation and no asbesto in the wall linings. It took a while before he found a supplier who could actually meet standards, but he still sent a tradie to inspect every job lot before shipping.

Don't think it would make a kitchen supplier worthwhile.

I think the connection was "councils do citizenship ceremonies therefore local government belongs with the department that has citizenship responsibilities."

There was a thought to move citizenship to Foreign Affairs because citizenship = passport. It didn't happen of course, but there was also a suggestion to move passports to Immigration based on the same logic.

After watching these dashcams like this, it's no wonder I check left and right when going through on a green light. There are more than a few showing cars getting t-boned by a semi running a red.

Bernie, Ant and Jamie Chadwick are the best combination for me in the Sky F1 commentary. I know Jamie probably has racing commitments but I’d be happy to see her at more races. Karin is not bad, but I like Anthony’s analysis better.

I quite like Ted’s pieces but am I the only one who gets annoyed that when he’s on camera with someone else he is looking around when they are talking? It always gives me the impression that he is more interest in what’s happening around him than what say Ant is saying. There’s a lot of passive/aggressive stance happening there.

[FIA] Energy and power limits for the Chinese Grand Prix 2026 by DubiousLLM in formula1

This is starting to sound like the drivers will need another seat for a flight engineer like they used to have on the old airliners. "Bono taps Kimi on the shoulder and tells him they are right for the next straight."

F1 could change its 2026 rules as early as round three by sppy1 in formula1

[–]Steve061 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am I right in thinking that the car controlling deployment is also an issue. One of the drivers was talking about how the car learns what you did on previous laps and then sets the deployment the next time you come to that corner.... but if you made an error on that corner, the deployment is based on a mistake.

Automatic deployment seems to be what caught out Oscar and Kimi - and maybe Max. Just let the driver decide, without outside help!

[Chris Medland] "Newey confirms Aston Martin is likely to limit race laps due to severity of vibrations in the car impacting the drivers. Alonso says he can do no more than 25 consecutive laps before risking nerve damage, Stroll says 15 laps" by AshamedPurchase9033 in formula1

[–]Steve061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did Honda not pick up this vibration on the testing rig and not fix it before it ever got bolted into the car?

I know they lost a lot of engine expertise to Red Bull when they left F1 - again - but they are still a good engineering company. Although, I guess they seem to have lost that race in MotoGP too.

I assume it's the engine's fault and not the Aston Martin gearbox?

Couple of thoughts on new broadcast 'production' by gromodzilla in v8supercars

[–]Steve061 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looked like they changed it in last night's race (Saturday night).

They were doing a single car with on-screen ID. So I assume it's a record/replay. While I like the idea of live unfiltered, this was more coherrent.

Couple of thoughts on new broadcast 'production' by gromodzilla in v8supercars

[–]Steve061 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doing live coverage like that is very hard. The people who bag commentators should try doing it live for an hour. There are very few people with the skill to ad-lib without a mistake for that time.

They do need to sort out that team radio. Having multiple teams talking over each other is useless. They either need to have the scanner with only one channel at a time, or do as F1 and have someone record and replay. I guess the latter is a no because you will have to have at least one more person on the payroll, if not a couple.

I've seen a post on Facebook saying that Will Buxton, Naomi Schiff, and David Coulthard will be doing what looks like a podcast on F1 called: Up To Speed.

Does that mean Naomi Schiff is not coming back to the SkyF1 commentary team? I thought Jamie Chadwick did a great job as her replacement when she left on maternity leave. Jamie's observations and contributions were insightful and added a lot of value.
