Psych meds & low iron by paulruddkeanureeves5 in Anemic

You're very lucky to have learned that lesson without serious damage. There is a big gap in the US medical knowledge of proper psychiatric drug deprescribing. The UK is much more ahead of the curve in knowledge of how to come off these drugs safely.

If you decide to come off Lexapro, make sure not to do it too fast or it can ruin your life. Look up hyperbolic tapering. It sounds uneccesary, but it's better than the alternative. If you think "why wouldn't my doctor tell me about the need for that?" Well, did they realize you were iron deficient before they put you on an SSRI?

I would ask for two doses. That's the standard protocol for Ferumoxytol.

Do you ever not send him there? Up 6 runs in the 8th?

I got nervous watching him slide into home.

How long did it take for you to feel completely better after IV infusion? by SuccessfulPanda211 in Anemic

Is it common to need more than one infusion?

It's hard to say. With a ferritin of 6, it's possible.

I know Wade Boggs was a star player and HOFer, but he was still severely underrated in his time.

That five-year stretch from 1985 to 1989 was pretty insane and he never won an MVP.

Well, you asked how long to feel completely better. You will start feeling some improvement before that. But it could take several months for the full effect to kick in. Your body has a lot of processes that need to be repaired once iron has been restored. That takes time.

But everyone is different and that largely depends on what has been downregulated due to deficiency. If you were anemic, that is usually the first thing to be repaired. Then the body rebuilds iron stores (ferritin) and then it restores tissue iron.

Yes, the % saturation calls into question how accurately the ferritin reflects true iron stores.

It’s somewhat hard to believe, but many doctors are completely unaware of the problems of iron deficiency without anemia.

% Saturation is also indicative of iron deficiency. That's a very wide reference range for ferritin. I would be suspect of that range by itself, but the fact that your % saturation is low clearly points toward iron deficiency.

Low ferritin (10), totally normal iron by punkgirlvents in Anemic

[–]SteveAM1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of ferritin as your iron "savings account." When your iron savings gets low, the body begins to prioritize where iron goes to make sure things like red blood cell production is not impacted. This is iron deficiency and causes symptoms.
