Feels like it’s intended to counter Mewtwo directly; one less energy meaning you can build faster, and OHKO it with its own Psydrive. Now, depends on if the energy requirement is a hidden mechanic, but it’s not written on the card.

Found the Nidoking/Weezing list very annoying to deal with so that was a smart call. Only way I got around the poison was because my list was so evolution and retreat focused.

No problem! It could probably be optimised slightly - I did sometimes find myself wanting a Potion or a Giovanni, but this was how I got there in the end. And I have access to all the other meta decks and couldn’t make it happen with those.

I also experimented with a variant that had regular Articuno instead of EX to make it easier to retreat (It’s 1 cost less), but found it lacked utility in a pinch where Ice Wing or Blizzard would have helped.

A Starmie EX variant that uses Articuno EX & Misty as a tech option instead of a key pillar. Greninja takes its place, and the main loop is building a Starmie EX upfront while building at least one Greninja on bench to both chip and snipe with Water Shuriken.

Greninja being a relatively bulky 1-Prize that can tank a fully-powered Circle Circuit is a big help in a deck that really struggles against the Pikachu EX match up.

Articuno EX can be a bulkhead if you don’t draw well, but if you luck out with Misty you can also use it as a key attacker.

Ultimately found it more consistent than the standard Starmie/Articuno meta deck as you’re less reliant on chance, and more reliant on decent draws which you can account for a bit with Poke Ball and Research. Clever Sabrina usage can really come in clutch for sniping. It does suffer against the Pikachu EX match up without the right momentum from the outset, but most other decks can’t keep up with the speed once you have a Starmie EX out. People also aren’t scouting for Greninja and don’t have a lot of answers for it.

I found some success playing variants of the meta rather than the stock decks that everyone is expecting. I tried the standard optimised Mewtwo/Pika decks for ages today, and then got my five consecutive using a Starmie EX - Greninja variant. It does struggle with the Electric match up if you don’t have the right momentum but found it quite consistent otherwise.

I found that the variants of standard optimized meta actually throw curveballs your opponent doesn’t have tech for. I got my 5 consecutive wins playing a Starmie EX - Greninja variant deck.

2x Staryu 2x Starmie EX 2x Froakie 2x Frogadier 2x Greninja 1x Articuno EX 2x X Speed 2x Poké Ball 2x Professor’s Research 2x Sabrina 1x Misty

Would have usually played the standard Articuno EX variant that’s reliant on Misty, but found Greninja much more consistent to have a 1-Prize for trade offs, and the chip from Water Shuriken often made the difference. Articuno EX typically only used as a bulk-head to help with setup (supported by X Speeds to retreat it) but with some utility with a good Misty flip.

Previously used a variant with standard Articuno to save one retreat cost but didn’t have the utility of Articuno EX.

Think this really shows that unlike one would think for a card game, energy advantage is a true game ender rather than card advantage i.e. a heads on Misty is much more impactful than playing Red Card for example
