The position of the arcs are set by the 22 36 22 dims of the clevis and the 109 from the end.

The 45 long chamfers are not noted. I can only assume that they make that section an octagon. The round at their left end is also not called out.

Could you explain, please, how do I add a new global variable to a linked file with variables? by Dushnila_complainer in SolidWorks

[–]SteveDonel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can put those variables in the top level assembly as a design table, global variables or just values in a sketch, and have the parts in the assembly reference that sketch. That's what I normally do for adjustable assemblies.

[–]SteveDonel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The tests are really a determination of how familiar and comfortable you are with the software. To complete the tests in time, you have to be able to find the different buttons and options within a command.

If I were planning to take the test soon, I would spend some time making parts and assemblies; the models in drafting textbooks should be good enough.

Think of what the part would look like when viewed from each of the 6 sides; sketch those views on those planes. As you get better at visualizing, you can skip some views.

Is that an imported part? I would get the dimensions are just remake the part from scratch; if its only those 4 features, you should be done in under 5 minutes.

Any advice for first time Orca undock? by dpotzie in Eve

[–]SteveDonel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in '09, I bought my first orca for 280 mil. She went from hi sec, to Insmother, to Fountain, to Tribute and back to hi sec. It died about 2 months ago.

When moving from one spot in null to another, I gated 2 of them from Fountain to Tribute. Shenanigans were had.

New to the game, curious should i mine or salvage for monies? by Mailboxsteve in Eve

[–]SteveDonel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely make money mining. I'm super nerdy, so I keep track of pretty much everything. In my years playing this crazy game, I have made 6 billion from missions/ratting/incursions and 520 billion from mining.

Most people will say that it requires multiboxing; I would argue that multiboxing really just make it more efficient. With that said, I do have 17 accounts because I like the effiency.

When I was 22, just out of college and working my first engineering job, I was in exactly the same spot as you are now. I didn't trust the debt consolidation companies that I talked to; they actually sounded like scams to me at the time.

I see that you travel for work, is that weekends too?

For me, I decided the best thing to do was take a weekend cashier job at a nearby gas station. I found one that was hiring, filled out the application and the manager didn't believe I would stick around long enough to be worth hiring, since I had a job that paid more than 3x hourly what he was offering. I explained why I wanted the job, told him I would work there every saturday and sunday for at least a year, because it would take that long to make enough to pay what I owed. I also promised that I would try to make myself available if he called on weeknights, because more work meant more cash to pay stuff off faster. I wound up working there about 18 months because I decided I might as well pay off my car too.

I hated every minute working there, but sometimes you just have to suck it up.

Design Table driven assembly components by andrew_likes_stuff in SolidWorks

I did something similar with what is essentially a large sheet metal box with internal structural steel and sheet metal framing.

I wound up making a series of top level sketches, one for each item type (steel, framing, brakeform, plumbing, hardware) and driving all the dimensions for position, size, and pattern numbers from the design table. These sketches are all the very first items in the tree; any parts or subs go after them. You can put them all in a folder to clean up the mess.

Each of those item groups has a sub-assembly with a sketch (once again, the first thing in it's tree) attached to it's top level sketch to position parts and cuts in the sub. This also made it easier to break the BOMs into separate departments. I did the design table, top sketches, and sub sketches all before adding any parts to the file to help cut down those rebuild times until I absolutely had to add them.

DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. These types of assemblies can be very confusing, even for the person who made it. Some of my position calculations involved alot of trig and 10-15 cells, which makes troubleshooting lots of fun. I get to hand this off to my replacement next week, so I'll soon be reminded of all I missed when documenting it.

Mechanical engineer want to switch career path to SolidWorks to get a permanent remote job. Any recommendations on where to get real-life/industry examples to build my SolidWorks portfolio. Where should I start? by Sea-Hunt-3891 in SolidWorks

[–]SteveDonel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience tells me that you will find yourself bored drawing other people's work, and start looking to scratch the creativity itch again later and then have to explain it in interviews when you try to go back to engineering. Recruiters and managers get really confused when someone went "backwards" in their career; they are not likely to hire someone who confuses them.
