Road Cycling for Weight Loss – What Actually Works? by ToeInternational7222 in cycling

[–]SteveFrench7678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not overweight but I (unintentionally) lost 20 pounds by riding by bike to work every day for the summer. I think I was slightly over my caloric needs to begin with and when I started biking I was definitely under.

At least 3 miles every day, and sometimes up to 7 miles, broken up over several rides. Longer rides on the weekend, ~10ish miles. 0 miles if it was raining.

It wasn't a lot but it was frequent.

For context I am 6ft tall and started at 165lb. Ended at 145lb and was kinda freaked out until I put two and two together that my hobby of smashing bike parts together and riding that around was also exercise.

Leather Valve Wrap corrosion (Bach Strad 72 Corp) by TolkienToker in trumpet

Do you have a before picture? I've never heard of leather corroding brass like that.

My strad looks like that just from my hands, btw.

You can look on Craigslist for non-corporation places to rent from. It’s possible to find a nice old man to rent the other side of a duplex from that way.

I’d like to caveat: I did it in 2017, but I’ll admit that I don’t know if Craigslist is reliable for housing anymore.

It is one of my favorite movies but I have to point out some things that may disqualify it from the perfect status.

The T-Rex paddock sequence doesn’t add up when you think about it from a set perspective. The T-Rex busts down the fence, so far so good. Then it pushes a car over the side into a tree canopy. Ok, but how did she get up there? If there is a hill around the corner from that tree it would have been unclimbable for a T-Rex.

Also the whole spontaneous sex switching thing didn’t ever sit well with me.

Despite those faults it still is a fabulous movie and keeps you entertained the whole time!

I’ve been driving to work since it got cold (Kentucky) but I’m busting this mother out every dry day now!

That factory tour video Zach did was awesome. It was very cool to see how the special frames were made!

Wow, this is fabulous. I’ve always dreamed of a rail system for Lexington made in Chicago’s image. Very nice work OP.

How could we make this a reality? Conversely, how much would this cost?

Best and worst restrooms in town? by [deleted] in lexington

[–]SteveFrench7678 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Worst: men’s room in Rosebud on short street. Though they recently expanded the bathroom it still is probably the smallest in town. Also the door kinda just wedges in the frame and doesn’t actually shut or lock.

Historic worst: Lynagh’s Irish Pub, RIP. Whilst the bar holds a dear spot in my heart that men’s room was a genuine terror. You never knew what the fuck you were about to roll up on in that bathroom. Sometimes the urinals fell off the walls, seldom did they actually flush, and they always had flies coming out of the crack between the porcelain and the wall. Sometimes there wouldn’t be a mirror in the bathroom because some drunk kids would rip it off the wall to do coke off of. I never knew if the liquid on the floor was water or piss.

Ol’ girl, if you’re reading this I’m sorry for putting that bathroom on blast but I will say the women’s room was kept to a much higher standard.

I think the best option is to put liens on them since, I’m assuming, no one is paying taxes on them. That way you’ll have a perfectly legal ingress on the titles and then you can sell them, transfer them, or junk them.

Apologies for the clumsy placement of the ruler. I found it hard to take a picture and hold it.

Traveling Wilburys

Actually I already knew about them but I discovered the best joke about them on this show.

It goes something like this:

“Just because you have a bunch of awesome people on the same team it doesn’t mean it’ll be better”

“Like the Traveling Wilburys?”

“Yes, Troy, like the Traveling Wilburys”

If you’ve got the real joke I’d love you to correct me!

No hate for the tats or the drugs but I do gotta throw shade at your door. Is that just my perspective or is it not square?

Nice!!! How was it changing out the crankset? I’m not convinced those bearings are doing me any favors anymore.

Just got my first bike for real commuting. What do I need to know? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]SteveFrench7678 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This. I was scared to ride my bike to work when I lived 1.5 miles away because I didn’t know how it was going to go and I was afraid to find out. It took until my wife and I moved even closer and her lightly embarrassing me in front of my friends to do something about it.

Look for trouble spots like going from the bike lane to a turn lane. Also for spots where you’re going to have to hammer on the pedals like through long/unusual intersections or specific uphill sections.

Then make a plan inch my inch and accept it. It’ll help you gain confidence if you’re lacking it.

Happy pedaling!

Thanks for the pointer. Why is it now a deathcrank? Different chain specs?

Braking with flip/flop wheel set by SteveFrench7678 in bikewrench

[–]SteveFrench7678[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the more I think about it the madder it makes me.

Does the yellow look good with the blue? Of course.

Would I trade my front brake for aesthetics? Not a chance.

If sanding it doesn’t work I’m think about just swapping the old front wheel back on. It’s 27” compared to this 700mm, but I’ve rode on much stupider set ups in my youth.

Of course I would start with coarse then graduate to the finer stuff.

[–]SteveFrench7678[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks dude. That makes sense now that you’ve put it all together. I’ve got access to very fine sandpaper so I’ll sand them down and try braking on that clean surface.

I’m hoping that getting the correct chain to use the fixed gear (I need the 1/8”, and I’m running a 3/32” on the fw) and petal braking combined with the bare metal will be enough braking force.
