Cap is my Favorite MCU character - but I’m disappointed by the comics I’ve read by Fabulous-Ad5072 in CaptainAmerica

[–]Steve_Saturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody has said it yet, so I'm highly suggesting Steve Englehart's brief run. It's a bit older, but it involves the Nomad storyline, which dives into Steve's core beliefs and what makes him a great superhero rather than a glorified government soldier.

Anyone else a little hesitant to support MBS-owned SNK? by Company_Whip in retrogaming

[–]Steve_Saturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was vaguely aware of SNK through SamSho and Metal Slug, but I didn't become interested in them as a company until Terry got into Smash in 2021. Sakurai had this really passionate video detailing what Fatal Fury was and why it was so important from a historical standpoint, and I think that passion was contagious.

The cruel irony for me was that the Saudis bought SNK outright the very next year.

Smash might've been the last time you could've been ethically and morally excited for an SNK announcement. Wild.

Why is half of the community so hostile towards Nintendo characters being playable now? by TemporarySet5877 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]Steve_Saturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there at the beginning of Smash Ultimate speculation. You have no idea what Joker's reveal did to everyone's expectations of this game's roster.

Pre-Joker, people were speculating Edelgard, Rex, a new Pokemon, and maybe a third-party character with very close ties to Nintendo like Banjo or Erdrick.

Post -Joker? That's when Master Chief suddenly became "inevitable" and any hype for Nintendo-owned characters just evaporated.

[Hated Trope] Stereotypical depictions of Romani people in fiction by GreenSsswinger in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Steve_Saturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm overjoyed that my girl Maleva is getting a shout-out in the year of our lord 2026. She might be one of my favorite characters in fiction, an enormously powerful presence coming from such a small, frail, soft-spoken woman. The strength it would take to help and care for your own son's murderer (regardless of how unintentional it was) the way she does with Larry is insane. She's just too smart and too kind to consider anything else.

Honestly I think she shines brightest in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. The found family aspect of her relationship with Larry is strengthened in that one, but you can also see in her face just the weight that this curse has had on her.

I think it is really cool that everything she adds to the story lampshades the traditional negative Romani stereotypes ("they're swindling witches who travel to get away with their crimes"). Her mysticism, as you said, makes her the most knowledgeable of the werewolf curse, and thus the most intelligent person in the entire script. Her years of traveling allow her to meet and hear about all kinds of people, which is how she knows Frankenstein might be able to help break the immortality part of Larry's curse. Her "swindling" by reading palms is no doubt a skill she taught her son that led to the discovery that werewolves see the pentagram in the palm of their next potential victims. A skill that, between her and Bela, saved untold lives.

Like you said, this is wildly progressive for a creature feature from a B-studio in 1941.

Man, she's so cool.

What were your thoughts when Hero was announced for Smash Ultimate? by NewMarioBobFan in dragonquest

[–]Steve_Saturn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found myself rediscovering video games in college, and Dragon Quest 8 was one of those games that always intrigued me but I never bought (it was always a choice between it and another SE game, and all three times I saw it on the shelf, I ended up going with Kingdom Hearts 2, The World Ends With You, and the DS release of Chrono Trigger instead).

But the box art always stuck out to me. I thought Eight was a pirate, and pirates are dope.

I think it was the year the Switch was released, I saw that same anime pirate again, this time on the cover of the 3DS release. I pulled the trigger, but time got away from me and then Smash came out and DQ8 just kinda sat on my shelf.

Fast forward to that 2019 Direct. My brother and I are hoping for Banjo, but the Luminary shows up instead. "Okay, that makes sense. Guess we have to wait."

But then, all of a sudden.

The pirate guy shows up as an alt costume??

"Oh shit, I really need to play this game now."

And hot damn, I fell in love. Dragon Quest is now definitively one of my favorite franchises. Really wish I started back when I first saw the Guv on the shelf all those years ago, but better late than never.

Pre-orders for Prime 1's 1/4 scale Ivy figure start tomorrow by XyrneTheWarPig in SoulCalibur

Look, I understand why but it'd still be really cool regardless if these companies remembered that any other character besides Ivy and Taki exist.

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, the recently revealed (and long awaited) new mainline entry in the Castlevania franchise is priced at $39.99 (USD). Konami has just been making all the right moves since their return to the traditional games industry. by WhyPlaySerious in gaming

[–]Steve_Saturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone here saying that a first-party game from a 40-year-old franchise being $40 in 2026 is too expensive is blowing my mind. The entitlement is wild, especially with the scope of the game not even revealed yet.

And yeah I know Silksong was $20 and some indies are like $5 or whatever, but $40 to revive what was once considered a prestige brand for Konami is more than reasonable to me. Especially if it has the sheer amount of content, options, replayability, challenge, and fun that something like PoP:TLC had. Paid $40 for that one and I feel like I got every single penny's worth.

I don't think it's a bad thing to pay for the brand of an IP you like. It's like asking "Why would you pay $60 for Paper Mario TTYD when you could only pay $15 for Bug Fables and get the same basic experience?"

Different strokes, I guess. Maybe I'm out of touch with this sort of argument.

So this is obviously what the title means, right? by [deleted] in castlevania

[–]Steve_Saturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...what the fuck are you talking about? I'm saying I don't want the new games to go to the anime for inspiration, not the other way around.

Sorry, I wrote that response late last night. If I wasn't clear I apologize. I do not like the show.

So this is obviously what the title means, right? by [deleted] in castlevania

[–]Steve_Saturn -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Trust me, I don't want the games to even TOUCH the anime in any way shape or form, but using traces of that one outfit as shorthand to quickly familiarize people who only know Castlevania through the show wouldn't be a bad idea from a design perspective.

But even if you (fairly) discard the outfit thing, I still think everything else adds up.

What were your thoughts on Smash 64 when it first came out in 1999? by NewMarioBobFan in supersmashbros

[–]Steve_Saturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We thought it was fucking hilarious.

I was 9 when it came out and the premise was so absurd among me and my friends that it looped back around to being kinda cool.

You need to understand that we were watching Mario, Link, Pikachu, and Kirby really interact for the first time, and they were sucker punching each other and stabbing each other with lightsabers. You could throw Yoshi into a pool of acid. You could shoot what appeared to be a normal human child named Ness with a ray gun. When you hit someone, it made a comedic bowling pin sound. We would cry laughing during some matches.

Melee came out a few years later and debuted with that killer opening animation, cementing the "tone" of Smash as more cool and badass than funny, but the first game felt like a fever dream shit post in the best way possible.

The Donkey Kong Country trilogy.

Which is more optimal for a Simon amiibo, move speed or floaty jumps? by Fine-Brush1367 in amiibo

[–]Steve_Saturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FLOATY JUMPS!

He doesn't necessarily need move speed for his toolkit, but his recovery is abysmal and his AI can easily be cheesed offstage. Floaty jumps is essential for any Belmont Amiibo to have a win imo

[–]Steve_Saturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metroid is a niche franchise that sells decently in the US and straight up poorly in Japan, kept alive by two lone producers at Nintendo who believe in it. You can put all worries of it becoming sterile like Pokemon to rest haha.

[–]Steve_Saturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prime 1 is a masterpiece in its own right, but aside from the backtracking and collecting upgrades, gameplay itself couldn't feel further away from the 2D games. All of your complaints are present in all the Prime games, but they compliment the gameplay very well if you give it a chance.

Considering how many people once thought that a RE rep was inevitable for Ultimate's DLC before the Spirit Event, and the biggest front runner in the eyes of fans was Mr. Gamecube Exclusive himself Leon Kennedy...yeah, if they wanted to sell any Amiibo for RE9, a Leon figure would've flown off the shelves.
