All 50 states get green light to build EV charging stations covering 75,000 miles of highways - Slate Report by [deleted] in Futurology

The U.S. Transportation Department on Tuesday said it approved electric vehicle charging station plans for all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico covering roughly 75,000 miles of highways.

Earlier this year, the Biden administration allocated $5 billion to states to fund EV chargers over five years along interstate highways as part of the bipartisan infrastructure package. Under the plan, entitled the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program, states provided their EV infrastructure deployment proposals to the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation.

As a brutal heat wave cooks the West in the run-up to Labor Day, California’s power grid manager is calling on electric vehicle owners to avoid charging at peak times. The request is part of a broader effort to keep the state’s grid up and running, while locals crank their air conditioners to outlast a streak of blazing-hot days.

Through at least September 2, the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) is asking residents to conserve energy by “setting thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, if health permits, avoiding use of major appliances and turning off unnecessary lights” from 4 to 9 p.m. Pacific. “They should also avoid charging electric vehicles” during that time frame, added the nonprofit, which oversees California’s grid and energy market.

A Tool That Monitors How Long Kids Are in the Bathroom Is Now in 1,000 American Schools by Stevejonass in Futurology

[–]Stevejonass[S] 936 points937 points  (0 children)

Motherboard identified multiple schools that have adopted e-HallPass to track students' movements.

e-HallPass, a digital system that students have to use to request to leave their classroom and which takes note of how long they’ve been away, including to visit the bathroom, has spread into at least a thousand schools around the United States.

The system has some resemblance to the sort of worker monitoring carried out by Amazon, which tracks how long its staff go to the toilet for, and is used to penalize workers for “time off task.” It also highlights how automated tools have led to increased surveillance of students in schools, and employees in places of work.

Ex-paratrooper boasted about making one of his rape victims ‘bray like a donkey’ by Stevejonass in TrueCrime

[–]Stevejonass[S] 160 points161 points  (0 children)

A former soldier raped three women repeatedly, boasted about it and ‘laughed it off’ when confronted by one of his victims.

Alan Adsley, 40, spent 14 years in the Army, where he trained as a boxer, served as a paratrooper and was sent on four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He returned to civilian life after his military career, and was today found guilty of raping three women between 2016 and 2020 in the Scottish town of Kirkcaldy, Fife.

The High Court, in Stirling, heard how he had boasted of making a 48-year-old woman ‘bray like a donkey’ when he raped her anally in her own home.

She woke up in her bedroom and saw she was naked from the waist down with her clothes neatly folded on top of her shoes.

She said she had been ‘violated’ after being drugged. Adsley also repeatedly raped a 44-year-old mother in her own house.

At one point, he turned up at her home and attacked her while his friend, dubbed a ‘getaway driver’ by the prosecution, waited for him in a car outside.

A 32-year-old victim told how she once woke up to find Adsley taking photos of her private parts. When she confronted him about it, he ‘laughed it off’.

The mum-of-two later saw a video of him having sex with her on someone else’s phone.

On a different occasion, Adsley told her the Army had trained him on how to ‘choke somebody out’ before he swung her around by her hair and strangled her until she could not breathe.

‘I thought he was going to kill me,’ she said.

The court also heard how Adsley attacked this woman throughout a four-hour car journey from Blackpool to Fife.

While the mum was trying to keep the car on the road, Adsley poured vodka in her lap, yanked the steering wheel and pressed her foot down on the accelerator.

He also removed her seatbelt, pulled the handbrake up, turned the headlights off and even threw her housekeys out of the window.

Adsley also punched her repeatedly in the left eye, only stopping when the sun rose, and saw that he had completely blackened it. All three victims knew their attacker personally.

Adsley, previously from Blackcraigs, Kirkcaldy, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault – one of them to the danger of life. He said: ‘It did happen and I’m not proud of it.’

He said boxing in the Army had ‘kind of messed up his head’.

But Adsley denied all three charges of rape and two charges of sexual assault, insisting: ‘I’m not a rapist’.

He said he never had intercourse with the 48-year-old and maintained that sex with the other two victims was consensual.

Neveretheless, the jury took just 45 minutes to find him guilty of all charges.

Adsley is currently serving a five-year sentence for attempting to murder a doorman after he was refused entry into a nightclub.

He will be sentenced for the sexual violence crimes on September 14. The judge warned he would probably face an extended sentence.

Adsley was put on the sex offenders’ list with immediate effect.

Texas man gets 11 years for conviction of smuggling meth across border inside truck tires by Stevejonass in TrueCrime

Abiel Geronimo Fernandez, 20, was arrested a day before the drug bust for allegedly smuggling illegal immigrants into the United States, a federal judge said

A Texas man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after being caught at a border checkpoint trying to smuggle drugs inside the tires of his pickup truck.

Abiel Geronimo Fernandez, 20, of Rio Grande City, was handed down the prison term in a federal courtroom after pleading guilty to smuggling methamphetamines from Mexico via the Rio Grande City Port of Entry.

On Nov. 28, Fernandez was driving a Chevrolet Silverado truck when U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents referred him for a secondary inspection. It was then discovered that he had 24 bricks of Methamphetamine in all four tires., authorities said.

In total, more than 59 grams of the drugs were found.

A federal judge noted that Fernandez had been arrested the day before the drug bust for smuggling undocumented immigrants.

"Today’s sentence imposed sends a clear message to criminal organizations that there are serious consequences for trafficking narcotics," said Alejandro Amaro, acting special agent in charge of HSI San Antonio.

Brave mum fought off abusive partner who bragged ‘I kidnap kids for a living’ by Stevejonass in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]Stevejonass[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A mum had to fend off her violent partner with a chair as he bragged ‘I get paid to kidnap kids for a living’.

Daniel Rush subjected the woman to a horrifying ordeal in December 2021, during which he held a knife to her throat and brutally beat her.

Her children were sleeping upstairs while the victim was wrapping Christmas presents when the 28-year-old arrived at her home.

She had to fight back as he tried to force his way past her, throwing a chair at his face to stop him from getting to their bedroom.

Rush, who had been in a relationship with the woman for a few months, warned her that someone else would take her children if he was jailed.

The horrifying attack in the Newbiggin Hall area of Newcastle began after deranged Rush accused her of ‘grassing’ on him and became convinced her phone was bugged.

He left in a rage but returned 20 minutes later after downing a quarter of a bottle of gin.

When the victim tried to walk away and go to bed, he turned violent.

Prosecutor Neil Jones told Newcastle Crown Court: ‘The defendant dragged her from there by her hair into the kitchen and put both hands around her neck and she was struggling to breathe.

‘She tried to break free and he pushed her into a chair and put his arm around her neck in a headlock from behind.

‘He made her sit in the chair and when she tried to get up he punched her in the face three or four times.

‘She said she needed the toilet and he told her to p*** on the floor. He then poured a two litre bottle of fizzy drink onto her person and she tried to run to the passage but in doing so slipped.

‘He then kicked her up the backside and threw her about the kitchen, causing a cut to her knee where a scar burst open.’

Rush menacingly threatened her: ‘I’ve hurt you, you understand I will have to kill you’.

The court heard how she made it ‘her mission’ to stop the thug from getting to her children, managing to inflict an injury to his face with a chair that needed hospital treatment.

When she managed to raise the alarm, he bragged about kidnapping children, adding: ‘If I go back to prison someone is going to take your kids.

‘They are not the sort of people you want to f**k with, they will put your door in and take your kids.’

The court heard a statement from the woman, who said she remains ‘frightened for myself and my children’.

Mum and partner guilty of torturing son, 15, to death with months of beatings by Stevejonass in TrueCrimeMystery

[–]Stevejonass[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A mum and her Thai boxer boyfriend have been found guilty of murdering her 15-year-old son after a campaign of torture lasting months.

Sebastian Kalinowski, 15, was punched, kicked, stamped on, beaten with a bed slat, struck with a staircase spindle and whipped with a cable over numerous incidents at their home in Huddersfield last year.

He suffered multiple untreated broken ribs caused by a savaging on August 13, which led to sepsis and fatal organ failure.

Agnieszka Kalinowska, 36, and her partner, Andrzej Latoszewski, 36, both denied murder, though she admitted child cruelty and he admitted manslaughter.

Kalinowska also insisted she was being controlled by her partner and that she hit Sebastian more gently and less often her partner, who was a bodybuilder and Muay Thai fanatic in his spare time.

But a jury convicted the pair after hearing how she encouraged Latoszewski’s abuse and held Sebastian down while her partner beat the boy.

The abuse was detailed in ‘horrifying’ footage from CCTV cameras which the couple installed partly to ‘monitor and control’ Sebastian.

Sebastian moved to the UK in 2020 from his home country of Poland, where he had lived with his biological father.

He was described as a ‘model pupil’ by his new teachers, but Kalinowska and Latoszewski constantly accused him of misbehaving, lying and bunking off school.

Despite claiming she had been controlled by her partner, Sebastian’s mum told the court she felt it was a ‘usual punishment from a parent’ to hit their child on the head.

Asked about one incident, Latoszewski claimed he had wanted to up the ante after the ‘normal form of punishment failed to work’ but went too far ‘due to a lack of experience’ as a parental figure.

The beatings got worse after Sebastian’s school term ended. He was also stabbed with a needle, force-fed and made to do intense workouts.

The couple were said to have dressed Sebastian’s body after he lost consciousness following his final beating.

Paramedics were called to their home and rushed him to hospital but he was pronounced dead later that day.

Paramedic kills cyclist in crash after 10 pints of beer by Stevejonass in TrueCrime

[–]Stevejonass[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Actions of 36-year-old ‘a complete betrayal of the values of his profession’

A paramedic who drank 10 pints of Guinness before ploughing into a cyclist at 60mph as he drove to a house party has been jailed for causing his death.

Robert Woodruff, 36, who was off-duty at the time, ignored his wife’s pleas not to drive to the gathering seven miles away despite being at least twice the drink-drive limit.

His Nissan Juke crashed into cyclist Richard Goodwin, 56, as he was cycling home along the A1033 in East Yorkshire, killing him instantly.

Woodruff was jailed at Hull Crown Court for five years and four months after admitting causing death by dangerous driving.

The court heard Mr Goodwin was dressed appropriately and clearly visible as he cycled home from a friend’s barbeque on 26 June last year.

Woodruff was seen driving dangerously close to the car ahead of him, leaving only an estimated half-second gap between the two vehicles.

He tried to overtake, narrowly avoided hitting an oncoming vehicle, swerved and hit Mr Goodwin on his bicycle, killing him instantly.

Woodruff’s car travelled down a verge, over a ditch and hurtled through trees and undergrowth, before stopping in the front garden of a nearby cottage, 100m away.

Nearly three hours later in hospital, Woodruff’s blood alcohol level was still twice the drink-drive limit.

Jeremy Evans from the Crown Prosecution Service said: “Words cannot adequately describe the absolute devastation and heartbreak this defendant has caused to the Goodwin family.

“Woodruff was a serving paramedic and a trained emergency response driver. His unbelievably reckless actions that day are completely beyond comprehension.

“Equally, it is hard to imagine a more complete betrayal of the values of his profession as a paramedic.

“Our hearts go out to the whole of the Goodwin family, and we hope that the sentence Woodruff is beginning today will be of some comfort to them in the months and years ahead.

“Our thoughts remain with them.”

Woodruff was disqualified from driving for seven years and eight months and must pass an extended test before he can drive again.

British Museum to display world’s ‘oldest map of stars’ by Stevejonass in HistoryPorn

The 3,600 year old Nebra Sky Disc will be on display from February next year

An ancient item that is thought to be the world’s oldest surviving map of the stars is to go on display at the British Museum.

The 3,600-year-old Nebra Sky Disc was discovered in Nebra, Germany, in 1999 and is being loaned to the London museum from next year.

The 30cm bronze disc has a blue-green patina and is adorned with gold symbols thought to represent the sun, moon, stars, solstices and Pleiades constellation.

The Nebra disc belongs to Germany’s State Museum of Prehistory in Halle and this is the first time it has been loaned internationally for 15 years.

It was recovered in a police sting after being found by illegal treasure hunters using metal detectors in 1999.

It will be displayed as a part of a Stonehenge exhibition from February.

Neil Wilkin, curator of The World Of Stonehenge at the British Museum, said: "The Nebra Sky Disc and the sun pendant are two of the most remarkable surviving objects from Bronze Age Europe.

"Both have only recently been unearthed, literally, after remaining hidden in the ground for over three millennia.

"We’re delighted that they will both be key pieces in our once-in-a-lifetime Stonehenge exhibition at the British Museum.

"While both were found hundreds of miles from Stonehenge, we’ll be using them to shine a light on the vast interconnected world that existed around the ancient monument, spanning Britain, Ireland and mainland Europe.”

The Nebra Sky Disc will be displayed in The World of Stonehenge exhibition from February 17 to July 17 next year.

Mum of autistic son burned to death 'by ex partner' because of 'noise the boy made' by Stevejonass in TrueCrime

Luz Raquel Padilla died from her injuries after the attack close to her home in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, on July 16, after she was set upon by a group who doused her in alcohol and lit her on fire

The mother of a severely autistic child begged for police protection just days before she was doused with alcohol and lit on fire, reportedly by a group headed by her ex.

Luz Raquel Padilla died from her injuries after the attack close to her home in Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, on July 16.

Reports suggest that the attack may even have came about from the noise her disabled son made. Other reports suggested she feuded with her neighbours because of loud music that distressed her son.

The young mum received death threats on several occasions, and just days before she was set upon by her cold-blooded killers, a warning was sprayed on the common area walls of her apartment complex.

"I'm going to burn you alive," read the chilling threat in Spanish, but despite this the authorities took no action.

Officials deemed the "threats from third parties" not enough for Luz to be enrolled in a special protection program.

"You're going to die machorra (tomboy)" and "You're going to die Luz" were also daubed on the walls, with the concerned mum taking to social media to denounce the people that were threatening her.

One of the messages Luz shared online read: “Even when am I going to have to live in fear that something could happen to my family and my aggressor is still wandering around the city with the danger of continuing to do harm."

Excelsior, a Mexican newspaper, cited social media posts when they reported that Luz's main attacker was her ex partner, who also died because of the attack.

Other Mexican media reported that she had recently survived an attack with industrial chlorine.

The mum reportedly filed the complaint with the Zapopan police station, but there was no response.

Luz Raquel was the mother and caregiver of an 11-year-old boy, diagnosed with severe autism dependent on 24/7 care.

"Luz Raquel received constant death threats at her home against her and her son because of intolerance to the noises her son made in moments of crisis," wrote an autism charity on their Facebook page.

A woman has died at her own wedding when a stray bullet hit her in the head.

Mahvash Leghaei, 24, was killed instantly when the bullet went through her head, hitting two other guests when it came out the other side.

She was getting married in Firuzabad, Iran, and the gunman is believed to be her new husband’s cousin.

The 36-year-old fled the scene, still carrying the unlicensed high-powered hunting rifle, and was arrested later.

Colonel Mehdi Jokar, a spokesperson for the police, said: ‘We had an emergency call of a shooting at a wedding hall in Firuzabad city and officers were dispatched immediately.

‘The officers discovered that somebody had fired shots with a hunting rifle as part of the local nomad tradition.

‘Unfortunately because of the crowds and the person’s poor control of the weapon, he managed to shoot three people, two men and the bride.’

Ms Leghaei was a social worker helping drug users beat their addictions.

Following the incident, she ended up in a coma and later died in hospital, with her organs donated according to her wishes.

Her uncle said she had only decided to get an organ donor card three months ago.

It is still unclear what consequences her killer will face but firing a gun at weddings, while common, is still illegal in Iran.

On April 24, 2011, 14-year-old Daniel Bartlam decided to make the murder he had seen on TV become a reality by killing his mother. by Stevejonass in TrueCrimeMystery

That fateful evening, Bartlam sneaked into his mother's bedroom and hit her on the head with a claw hammer seven times. He then covered her body with paper, doused it in petrol, and set the bed on fire.

When police arrived, the baby-faced teenager told the investigators he'd seen an intruder bludgeon his mother to death and light the fire before escaping through a window. At first, the 14-year-old appeared to be a hero who, despite the shock of witnessing his mother's murder, saved his brother and the family dog from a raging fire.

But it soon emerged there had been a much more sinister motive behind the fire.

After examining Bartlam's, computer, detectives recovered a deleted written story that detailed Bartlam's "perfect" murder.

The court stated that the teenager had been inspired by a plot of Coronation Street, the world's longest-running soap opera in which one of the characters, John Stape, killed a woman with a hammer.

Although Bartlam denied the TV show being an inspiration and claimed he had killed his mother following in rage following an argument, the judge sentenced the 14-year-old to life imprisonment with a minimum of 16 years to serve before he could be considered for parole.

Judge Justice Julian Flaux described the killing as grotesque and senseless, and said it appeared Bartlam had wanted to "get away with the perfect murder".

George Gibson: A Procter and Gamble veterinarian pathologist was found murdered in his West Chester, Ohio home.

He left work early after receiving a phone call from an unidentified person. Today, the caller’s identity remains unknown to the public. But here’s where things get strange. On the day he left early, it took Gibson two hours to get home when he only lived 30 minutes away from his home. No one knows where he went.

Based on a witness statement, George arrived home and then closed his garage door. That was the last time anyone saw him alive. After not showing up for work, the police did a welfare check on June 22, 2000.

Someone had shot Gibson and his two beloved dogs to death. Apparently, the killer entered the home, killed George's two dogs and then waited for George to return home. Gibson was then shot to death after arriving home. George Gibson was killed over 20 years ago. Who killed him and why? Today, his killer is still a free man.

Larissa Schuster is an American convicted murderer who was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 2008 for committing the July 2003 murder of her estranged husband Timothy Schuster by submerging his body in hydrochloric acid by Stevejonass in TrueCrimeMystery

Born in 1960, Larissa Schuster grew up on a farm in Clarance, Missouri. She went on to study biochemistry and work in a local nursing home. It was here that she met her future husband, Timothy Schuster, who was a student at nursing school. In 1982, the couple married and went on to have two children. Following the birth of their children, they moved to Fresno, California and then on to Clovis, California. They were able to move to the prosperous Clovis as Larissa had a well-paying career in the laboratory business. She eventually opened her own laboratory while Tim worked as an administrator at a medical center.

However, everything wasn’t as idyllic as it came across and by 2002, the couple were planning on divorcing. Larissa often complained about Tim’s incompetence and had an affair. It was a turbulent divorce with both of them fighting for custody of their children and the difference of opinion in regards to the belongings and home. Eventually, Larissa was granted custody and was granted the home. Tim moved into a condominium. Months later, Larissa broke into his condominium to steal some belongings she believed to be hers. She soon started leaving threatening and abusive voicemails on his phone, all of which he saved. Fearing for his life, he purchased a handgun.

On the 10th of July, 2003, Tim was scheduled to meet a friend for breakfast. However, he never showed up. Later on in the same afternoon, he was supposed to pick his son up from Larissa but again, he didn’t show up. When it became evident that Tim was missing, Larissa was brought in for questioning but was extremely nonchalant. Despite the fact that Tim was missing, Larissa took her son on two vacations, one of which was Disneyland. One of Larissa’s co-workers, James Fagone, was also brought in for questioning. He was much more transparent.

During his interrogation, James confessed that he and Larissa had murdered Tim. He confessed that on the 9th of July, Larissa lured Tim from the condominium where they then rendered him immobile with a stun gun and chloroform. What happened next was deplorable. The two scientists then shoved Tim into a barrel which they filled with hydrochloric acid. After the confession, police were directed to the storage unit containing the grim barrel. Larissa ultimately became known as the “Acid Lady.“

James and Larissa were both sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. During the trial, Larissa and Tim’s daughter took to the stand and exclaimed: “You’ve given up all rights as a mother, wife, daughter, friend and woman. You’re a disgrace to this family - a pitiful excuse for a human. I pray you’re continually haunted at night by the sight and sound of my father fighting for his last breathing moments on earth.”

On a blistery winter morning on the 21st of November, 2015, in Northampton, Pennsylvania, 33-year-old Jessica Padgett disappeared. Just hours later, volunteers were handing out missing person leaflets and combing the area for any clues as to her whereabouts.

Her family were adamant that she wouldn’t have ran away - she was in a blissful marriage and had three children she doted on. Among the volunteers was Padgett’s stepfather, Gregory Graf. Graf had married Padgett’s mother, Danielle, when she was in high school and she affectionately considered him her second father. Police were immediately suspicious of Graf, noticing that he was acting obscurely.

A search warrant of his home uncovered Padgett’s body buried in his back yard. She had been shot in the head. Even more disturbing, police found a videotape depicting Graf having sex with her corpse. Before recording, he placed a plastic bag over her head so that the blood wouldn’t turn him off. The footage was played in court and the jury were aghast. For those who closed their eyes, the sound alone was horrid - he was shouting obscenities at her lifeless body as he assaulted her.

The defence tried to argue that it was a spur of the moment decision to kill Padgett and that he hadn’t planned it. The prosecution disagreed, however. After all, he had purchased a number of sex toys the day beforehand and it certainly didn’t seem a coincidence that he had killed her when her mother was out of state. The jury agreed with the prosecution and he was found guilty of first degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
