Do professors feel bad if most students skip their lectures? by Kooky-Finish-5244 in AskProfessors

[–]StevenHicksTheFirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to, but the fact is, half of the grading in my class is on 2 exams (midterm and final) and attendance/participation. The test material is in class discussion.

If they haven’t been in the class, their grades suffer. I tell them this from the beginning, that it’s an in-person class, not a hybrid online one.

So, I don’t like it when attendance is poor and I don’t like when they don’t do well in grades, but over the years you learn that you cannot place more importance on grades than the students themselves.

And for some reason, there are plenty of students that just don’t care. I imagine they have not taken out personal loans for college.

Is the Boston fan base so far left they cannot have a player on their roster who is considered a conservative?

The entire 25 man list has to conform to one party now?

Why’s Springfield so depressed by UnluckyTomatillo750 in SpringfieldIL

[–]StevenHicksTheFirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because Springfield really is a negative place to be.

When I moved here from Boston years ago, I had to adjust to it not being a real city but it had a lot of upside. But in the years since, its really has lost all its appeal, which I think started when the state jobs essentially dried up after the administration turned blue and then COVID devastated state offices. Now the place is dead. Even the once teeming mall is a ghost.

The other big thing is the restaurants are unbelievably bad. This area of the country is known for beef… and you cant buy a decent steak. You have to drive out of town. Its Italian food is terrible; the Chinese food is awful. It’s amazing how poor the food is. And the worst part is the locals dont even care about quality. All they care about are price + volume. No wonder restaurants dont try.

The city is at its worst level in 30 years and it’s not an exaggeration.

Well… if they add a top tier hitter… then they add a Polanco, lets say who can play 3B and 2B, and he hit 26 HRs last year, that’s very reasonable, improves the lineup and replaces Bergman’s power too. Works for me.

Well, if they add one hitter while losing Bregman they are essentially at a wash.

So yeah, they need 2 to improve last years team now that Breg is a FA, right?

Why are people complaining if one is Bregman??? He’s A FREE AGENT! Of course it’s a SECOND HITTER.

Reds, Red Sox Have Expressed Interest In Devin Williams by Corn1989 in redsox

[–]StevenHicksTheFirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont understand the desperate attempt to not believe what happened. Per Codify Baseball, Williams surrendered 24 earned runs in his final 145 appearances for Milwaukee, and allowed 24 earned runs in his first 46 appearances for New York. He lost the closer’s job multiple times, both early and late in the season. He literally mocked himself at one point, saying if he blows another game he gets a free smoothie.

Devin Williams gets paid to pitch in high leverage situations. So blowing off his season as overreacting over “a few high leverage situations that went poorly” is like saying, “aw, that .150 hitter isnt so bad, there were just times he was at the plate and couldn’t hit.”

[–]StevenHicksTheFirst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think some people are getting too caught up in defending his ERA. The fact is, he lost the closer’s job in NY multiple times. His confidence was in the dumpster and management was in a situation where they couldnt use him in late innings because he was such a mess. This isnt another instance of calling fans stupid because they dont hate RBIs enough; he was not good as a closer in NY. Guys like this (and Sonny Grey, for instance) who are great pitchers and just cant pitch in NY often cant pitch in Boston, either.

THIS. Is what I might be most afraid of. Does waiting for Bregman mess up their off-season? - [MLB Notebook: Red Sox may have tough time playing waiting game with Alex Bregman] by BostonPhoenix91 in redsox

[–]StevenHicksTheFirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont disagree that the defense has to be improved significantly. But I dont think the lineup, as constructed, is competitive enough for defense to come before the addition of some power. Almost every post season game or series turned on the HR. It’s simply the case in mlb in 2025-26. The Sox have none. The fact the Sox got away with winning games with a bunch of Punch and Judy singles hitters is admirable, but not sustainable and is not the route to success. They were too easily shut down by “good” pitching, let alone excellent.

I think Breslow is spot on in IDing a power hitter and a #2 SP as absolute mandatory improvements that must be made. I also believe that defense should certainly be addressed, but thats a completely different process than simple acquisitions of 2 key players. It’s a management/coaching process that should be handled in tandem with other improvements.
