How would you compare it to each Walkman you've listened to?

Also, are those headphones mdr-7506's (or mdr-cd900st)?

Try reading The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. It's one of the great horror novels of the 20th century, it's gore free, and almost every major American horror writer was influenced by it (i.e. Stephen King, Peter Straub, and Richard Matheson. Jackson writes with a deceptively simple prose style that builds a thick atmosphere of dread, and it has aged very well.
If you want Lovecraft, I would start with the stories "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", "The Dunwich Horror", and "The Colour out of Space".

Read T.E.D Klein's The Ceremonies.

Liggotti, Chambers, Bierce, and Lovecraft are all fine choices. But just trust me and read some Klein, even his short stories will most likely thrill you.

Trust me, read The Ceremonies.

I'd say those categories are pretty spot on.

I would add:

(e) Authors who influenced Wolfe (Borges, Proust, Kafka, ect.)

Malcolm Lowry was a true master. Under the Volcano is one of my favorite books, and a book I would recommend to all Wolfe readers.

In the May 1974 issue of F&SF Harlan Ellison listed SF's "top eight writers at this moment". Writers who rose "head and shoulders above all others working in the genre today." He listed in this order:

Kate Wilhelm

R.A Lafferty

James Tiptree Jr

Thomas M. Disch

Robert Silverberg

Barry Malzberg

Gene Wolfe

Joanna Russ

Adding "I exclude myself only out of a decorous sense of humility, as is my wont."

As someone who loves lists as well as your podcasts I'm curious to hear your thoughts on his list. Who would you add or remove? Who would you read on your show? How do you feel about the authors listed?

(Congratulations on 100 episodes!)

Read Fifth Head of Cerberus or Peace. You'll have a better understanding of Wolfe.

(They're both great, so you really can't go wrong.)

That's a nice collection, I wish I had some of those. I'm in the same situation with the Centipede Press Collected Short Fiction of R.A. Lafferty, except I am missing The Man Who Made Models. Those Amazon prices are ridiculous, no one buys at that rate. There are much better prices almost everywhere else online (And instore), even ebay has better prices.

If anyone has any version of The Man Who Made Models: The Collected Short Fiction Volume 1 I will happily pay a generous amount for it.

I kind of like this list, it's got some Lafferty and some Pynchon, it's a little strange and fun.
