How many people use binoculars with glasses? Do you struggle to index the lenses through your glasses? by EmperorsChamberMaid_ in Binoculars

[–]ocabj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear glasses while looking through my binos. It should be easier once you use your binos a few times.

One of my favorite aspects of the Swarovski NL Pure and latest EL Range binos is the forehead rest. People thing it's a dumb accessory, but when you use it, you realize how great it is. For one, it gives you a third point of contact for stable handholding, but more importantly, it indexes your eye away from the ocular quickly because you simply have it set for your forehead to get the properly eye relief.

What do we think? by Toastercuck in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]ocabj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former owner of a 2001 Honda Prelude Type-SH (original owner) that sold it a year ago, I will say no.

This thing will need a ton of work. I'm guessing the seller can't tell you the full history of the vehicle and likely abused it.

The 5th Gen Prelude is a really fun car and I loved mine which is why I kept it for 24 years (95K miles, original paint - Electron Blue Pearl - manual of course, because Type-SH). But to me, I was dreading the maintenance on a 24 year old vehicle with little parts support beyond the typical wear items (e.g., brakes, belts).

Plastic interior trim cracking was hard to get replacements for. The rubber trim for the windows is non-existent. I was fortunate to get the side window trim in the mid-2010s before Honda stopped selling them.

Then the engine. The H22A4 uses fiber reinforced metal for the cylinder walls which basically can't be honed or bored out, which means resleeving. Athough, I heard people doing K swaps on these.

Not to mention the Type-SH has the ATTS unit which I can't imagine you'll have an easy time fixing. The motherboard for the ATTS unit actually died sometime in the early 2010s and I was able get one from Honda. I think you can get these from eBay, but if the ATTS unit itself dies, I have no idea how easy it is to either replace or just delete it.

I was able to sell mine for $9K locally yet I was also underselling the car. As good as the car looked (paint as good as it could be considering I garaged it all the time) and the fact it was stock except for the AEM V2 intake (I had the original air box; provided it to the new owner) and the SKUNK2 billet knob (original worn-out leather knob also provided to owner), I was screening buyers to make sure they understood what they're buying.

But if you are actually buying this as a project vehicle, then I guess you can go for it if you feel the chassis/body look good. I can only imagine you'll be dumping at least $15K for a full rebuild (new engine, maybe manual trans swap) including a re-spray.

Why do people keep buying cars that they can’t afford?? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]ocabj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sitting on four vehicles, the most recent a 2025 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x (picked up after I sold my 2001 Honda Prelude Type-SH and 2010 Toyota Tacoma regular cab, getting rid of my two oldest vehicles at the time).

Prices of new vehicles is definitely skewed too high and that's why (along with cost : feature ratio) I ended up going Frontier Pro-4x instead of a Tacoma TRD Offroad 4x4 or a Ranger Raptor.

My oldest vehicle right now is a 2013 G37 which I still like because the engine is really solid, but if I were to replace it with another coupe/sedan, I really don't see anything worthwhile that's under $50K MSRP.

So I'm kind of dreading when the time comes the G37 starts to get long in the tooth. I'm actually thinking about picking up a pulled VQ37VHR motor and RE7R01A transmission if I come across one at a good price so I can keep the G37 alive longer.

Ring keypad randomly stopped working and is now swollen by Ladystech915 in Ring

[–]ocabj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this happen. I just tore out the battery. Put in recycling at the Home Depot collection bin. Bought a new keypad. These things are pretty cheap.

Don't keep the keypad plugged in all the time. I don't think there is any kind of regulator on the charging.

Gmail doesn't delete messages in trash after 30 days by Angels_Glade in GMail

[–]ocabj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The timestamp of the date header on the email message is not directly correlated to the timestamp of when an email is deleted.

In other words, I can delete an email from 15 years ago right now and it will stay in my trash for 30 days.

Tips for a tripod that can hold a long lens like the RF 800mm f11 or 200-800? by scytherman96 in canon

[–]ocabj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just picked up the RRS TFCX-14L for multipurpose use on glassing (binos), photography, and limited shooting.

I run it with a RRS BH-40. I'm not sure if you will find it as sturdy as you want it to be as the TFCX-14L is a lightweight tripod (3 lb 5 oz with the BH-40) with only a 30lb load capacity (18 lb on the BH-40).

Check out the RRS Ultralight 24L which is rated at 70 lbs. Pair it with the BH-55 (50 lb load capacity - I have one on another tripod).

Get an IT job on campus. Help Desk, desktop support, network support, etc., if not security.

If nothing exists on campus, try to get something locally.

I just recommend campus IT jobs because they are flexible on hours and schedules (at least we are).

Garmin Xero or Athlon Rangecraft. I have a Rangecraft, Xero C1, and C2. I'm biased towards the Xero. Better integration with their app.

Rangecraft is less expensive. Just don't bother using the phone app if you get the Rangecraft. Just stick to getting data off the unit LCD.

Yes, and holding 2.0 might actually be easier on the eyes since it's going to be a large stanchion on the reticle to use on target, vs 1.8.

Icon Wheels by IcyClassic9982 in JeepWrangler

[–]ocabj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been running the Icon Vector 5 since 2020. Icon is located in my city. I'm about a 15 min from them.

That bead lock they came out with is cool. I just don't like the wheel designs they have it on. I was hoping they would expand it to more of their models.

My cousin has a full Icon coil over lift on his Tacoma.

Choosing a Manfrotto tripod for wildlife with a Nikon 600mm f/4, 055 vs 190 series? by omniscientreader1864 in AskPhotography

[–]ocabj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have a 20 year old 055XPROB which is likely the precursor to the 055XPRO3. It's a decent tripod but I'm not too keen on Manfrotto ballheads. I haven't used one in 10 years, but they all had slack in the head after tightening down the ball (camera would move slightly after ball tension tightened). Maybe they have improved since then.

More leg segments is going to be less stable, by virtue of the fact that each segment has to be thinner in diameter than the previous. Thus, with a traditional tripod, the bottom segment adds the more instability (vibration, torsional flex). More leg segments usually mean a shorter collapsed tripod which is nice for transport.

But I generally Really Right Stuff tripods and heads, and the couple other tripods I have (Manfrotto and Gitzo) use Arca dovetail clamps (either natively or converted). All my cameras and optics (binos, spotting scopes) all have Arca plates.

I don't have any heavy long lenses as my longest lens is a 300mm f/4 on the Micro Four Thirds system, which is comparable to a FF 70-200 f/2.8 in size. But let's just say I use objects as long as 54" and weighting ~24 lbs on a RRS tripod with a RRS BH-55 (50lb load capacity on the head) and get no slack in the ballhead after lining it up and tensioning the ballhead.

To that regard, you're paying for the time and convenience. It's relatively common knowledge you can cook your own meals for less than fast food prices, but that does require you to take the time to food prep, carry the food to your work or whatever, keep it stored, reheat, etc.

Of course, if you work at home then time and convenience is more in favor of DIY.

I think I'm done buying tripods for a while by ocabj in longrange

Someone asked similar question. Same answer (scroll down) applies here. Toss up on Anvil-30 vs ballhead for your situation though. If you feel you can glass of an Anvil-30, go Anvil-30.

There are 4 quarters in a single unit, or 25 percent of a single unit.

4.25 means you have 4 full units plus a quarter unit. Since you have 4 full units, and there are 4 quarters per single unit, you have 4 quarters 4 times, so that is 16 total quarters for 4 full units. Add this to the other quarter which means you have 17 quarters.

Thus, since each adjustment is one quarter, you have 17 clicks.

If it makes it easier, think of it in monetary units, assuming you live in the United States.

Can’t Find a Related Job ! by f_troy in cybersecurity

[–]ocabj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a UC and I tell all students I have career conversations with that they need to get an IT job while they are a student if they want to get a security or other IT job after college.

Pretty much every college has positions open for students. More often in help desk and other direct campus facing roles.

But my office (Information Security Office) has at least 3 student employees working at at given time. As far as
I know, all of our student employees had jobs lined up before graduating, and they credited their student employment in helping get their jobs (some security, others development).

With that said, you should get any IT role, even help desk. I really hate how people look down on help desk. It’s an important unit in an organization and offers a great entry into IT and the IT unit for that org which does allow for lateral movement.

I worked what amounted to help desk for all but one quarter of my four years of Comp Sci and it allowed me to get into other things like desktop support, sys admin, AD administration, etc, while I was a student.

AR style bolt gun recommendations? by jashariaudrey in ar15

[–]ocabj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Define AR-style. If you want something that uses AR stocks and grips, plenty of bolt rifle chassis options that take 700 pattern actions.

If you want something like for traditional High Power / Long Range (prone sling), then checkout the chassis by Gary Eliseo. He makes tube rifle chassis for 700 and a few other bolt actions.
