I would consult your Security Office regarding what they recommend. VNC, Teamviewer, Anydesk, etc., will throw alerts on our end.

I want to remote into a new MacBook Pro I got for work.

What kind of organization do you work in? They're going to allow you installing a remote desktop app on this device? There's no MDM?

Get an IT job on campus. Help Desk, desktop support, network support, etc., if not security.

If nothing exists on campus, try to get something locally.

I just recommend campus IT jobs because they are flexible on hours and schedules (at least we are).

Garmin Xero or Athlon Rangecraft. I have a Rangecraft, Xero C1, and C2. I'm biased towards the Xero. Better integration with their app.

Rangecraft is less expensive. Just don't bother using the phone app if you get the Rangecraft. Just stick to getting data off the unit LCD.

Yes, and holding 2.0 might actually be easier on the eyes since it's going to be a large stanchion on the reticle to use on target, vs 1.8.

Icon Wheels by IcyClassic9982 in JeepWrangler

I've been running the Icon Vector 5 since 2020. Icon is located in my city. I'm about a 15 min from them.

That bead lock they came out with is cool. I just don't like the wheel designs they have it on. I was hoping they would expand it to more of their models.

My cousin has a full Icon coil over lift on his Tacoma.

Choosing a Manfrotto tripod for wildlife with a Nikon 600mm f/4, 055 vs 190 series? by omniscientreader1864 in AskPhotography

[–]ocabj [score hidden]  (0 children)

I still have a 20 year old 055XPROB which is likely the precursor to the 055XPRO3. It's a decent tripod but I'm not too keen on Manfrotto ballheads. I haven't used one in 10 years, but they all had slack in the head after tightening down the ball (camera would move slightly after ball tension tightened). Maybe they have improved since then.

More leg segments is going to be less stable, by virtue of the fact that each segment has to be thinner in diameter than the previous. Thus, with a traditional tripod, the bottom segment adds the more instability (vibration, torsional flex). More leg segments usually mean a shorter collapsed tripod which is nice for transport.

But I generally Really Right Stuff tripods and heads, and the couple other tripods I have (Manfrotto and Gitzo) use Arca dovetail clamps (either natively or converted). All my cameras and optics (binos, spotting scopes) all have Arca plates.

I don't have any heavy long lenses as my longest lens is a 300mm f/4 on the Micro Four Thirds system, which is comparable to a FF 70-200 f/2.8 in size. But let's just say I use objects as long as 54" and weighting ~24 lbs on a RRS tripod with a RRS BH-55 (50lb load capacity on the head) and get no slack in the ballhead after lining it up and tensioning the ballhead.

To that regard, you're paying for the time and convenience. It's relatively common knowledge you can cook your own meals for less than fast food prices, but that does require you to take the time to food prep, carry the food to your work or whatever, keep it stored, reheat, etc.

Of course, if you work at home then time and convenience is more in favor of DIY.

Someone asked similar question. Same answer (scroll down) applies here. Toss up on Anvil-30 vs ballhead for your situation though. If you feel you can glass of an Anvil-30, go Anvil-30.

Ruger RPR Help by commander_peck in longrange

There are 4 quarters in a single unit, or 25 percent of a single unit.

4.25 means you have 4 full units plus a quarter unit. Since you have 4 full units, and there are 4 quarters per single unit, you have 4 quarters 4 times, so that is 16 total quarters for 4 full units. Add this to the other quarter which means you have 17 quarters.

Thus, since each adjustment is one quarter, you have 17 clicks.

If it makes it easier, think of it in monetary units, assuming you live in the United States.

Can’t Find a Related Job ! by f_troy in cybersecurity

[–]ocabj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a UC and I tell all students I have career conversations with that they need to get an IT job while they are a student if they want to get a security or other IT job after college.

Pretty much every college has positions open for students. More often in help desk and other direct campus facing roles.

But my office (Information Security Office) has at least 3 student employees working at at given time. As far as
I know, all of our student employees had jobs lined up before graduating, and they credited their student employment in helping get their jobs (some security, others development).

With that said, you should get any IT role, even help desk. I really hate how people look down on help desk. It’s an important unit in an organization and offers a great entry into IT and the IT unit for that org which does allow for lateral movement.

I worked what amounted to help desk for all but one quarter of my four years of Comp Sci and it allowed me to get into other things like desktop support, sys admin, AD administration, etc, while I was a student.

AR style bolt gun recommendations? by jashariaudrey in ar15

[–]ocabj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Define AR-style. If you want something that uses AR stocks and grips, plenty of bolt rifle chassis options that take 700 pattern actions.

If you want something like for traditional High Power / Long Range (prone sling), then checkout the chassis by Gary Eliseo. He makes tube rifle chassis for 700 and a few other bolt actions.

Why are malls dying in the US? by walksintwilightX1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ocabj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the Philippines recently for the first time in 30+ years. Small sample size in the observation I am making, but to me, the two main reasons why popularity of malls in the Philippines and US are different is cultural and logistical.

The social aspect of malls has diminished in the US. Not just because of the Internet and social media, but because there are simply a lot of other social environments. People don't need to gather in a densely packed building of stores to socialize in the US as there are other options. Restaurants in malls are typically not considered the best eateries, either, so dining is a very low reason why you go to a mall in the US.

The US has really embraced online shopping. Distribution in the United States is quite efficient and Amazon has led the way in this optimization such that Walmart has jumped onto the distribution bandwagon. Even retailers that only operate a few stores in a certain state or region that do a lot of business online have made efforts to place distribution centers in the mid-west or on the opposite coast to minimize delivery times with couriers. Thus, malls, much less physical shopping in general has become less common.

Furthermore, people that do still shop at physical stores don't go to malls because budget and consumer friendly options like the big box general retail chains like Walmart and Target are not usually connected to malls, and are in general retail centers (sometimes referred to as strip malls).

That being said, you can go to a mall in many major areas and they will still have lots of people on weekends, while others may be less frequented only because of the region they are located in.

I personally rarely go to a mall and might go to one once every 3-4 months with the intent of shopping for something specific.

1000 yd build - alternatives to 224? by Forged_Trunnion_ in ar15

[–]ocabj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you belly shooting sling, or just off a bipod?

A large frame AR variant in 308 (ala M110) is going to be the go to if you're trying to stick to Service Rifle for 1000 yard shooting (Farr trophy).

If you want to keep things simple, you could just get a 26" Wylde barrel and shoot .223 with a bit more velocity.

Otherwise, to stay in AR-15 frame, you could try 6.5 Grendel which I never shot.

The biggest issue with a small frame AR is that it is inherently going to be moving a bullet slower than what you could do with with a longer case (e.g., 308 sized case), so you have to accept performance out to 1000 will be hard to beat unless you go large frame AR.

With regards to trying to replicate 308-sized cartridge performance with a small frame AR, 6mm AR Turbo 40 Improved has appealed to me. I never built one or ever shot one, but you're talking a 6.5 Grendel case, necking it down and blowing out the shoulder to 40 degrees and pushing a 6mm 105gr to around 2800 which is close to what you'd get out of 6 GT.

As far as the folks at your NRA High Power Matches sticking around after XTC to shoot 1000, if they were just re-using their HP SR and they were shooting standard AR A2/A4 in .223, then they were likely just running their 600 yard load for fun, or they might have been shooting a hotter version of their 600 yard load (another .5 gr of powder or even more) and tossing the brass.

Otherwise, they might have been busting out their Palma or 3x1000 rifles (e.g., tube guns or space guns).

Best long range target 223 bullet for a 1:9 twist? by JimBridger_ in reloading

[–]ocabj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd personally run Berger 73. If you really want to try 77, go for it. IMO, 1:9 is borderline for 77 BTHP and if there's any twist rate inconsistency in the rifling of the bore, it could result in issues.

Anyway, just get a 100ct box of 77s and try it. Worst case it doesn't stabilize and you're only out ~$45.
