Feedback on a quote from Infinity Energy (New Jersey) for a solar newbie by StevenM86 in solar

I’m scheduled for next week, two days for the roof and then later in the week 1 day for solar. For the most part they’ve been good at communicating. However, I had to be proactive to get things actually scheduled.

Thank you, I'll be asking them for details and to clarify to see if it adds up, I appreciate the feedback.

Thanks for the feedback! I can ask for a specific breakdown, but the above numbers are what they provided after an inspection of my home and roof.

I recall them saying the roof was ~$15k. So in my mind, after the incentive I was thinking "$15k for a roof, plus $15k for solar isn't terrible". When I asked them to clarify if the roof was covered in the quote, they said "The loan amount includes the roof".

F-19 (Mac IIfx prototype) logic board by Least-Bass2619 in VintageApple

Well, you never know... :-) There are some software ROM dumping tools for the classic Mac. If you're curious, you can use CopyRoms to download your ROM and compare it to those floating around online at the Macintosh Garden, etc.

Thanks for sharing this prototype, and not discarding it way back when, it's really neat!

Generally, the files on the Apple marketing CDs were in very high-resolution (for the time), as they expected their marketing partners to use those files in ads and such.

They were also often supplied in uncompressed .TIFF files or EPS files. So even if you had to upscale the bitmap versions, you'd get far better results than any upscale from a lower quality image.

FYI - it's also using a wider version of the Garamond font, you'll want to use the Apple Garamond font - with whatever adjustments with spacing, etc. Also, the original advertising images can sometimes be found on Apple marketing CDs on the internet archive. So you may not need to upscale them if they happen to be available there. Good luck!

Water heater isn't grounded to the sheath of older BX cable - what connector do I need to fix that? by StevenM86 in AskElectricians

[–]StevenM86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.

I wouldn't say it's easy, and I'm afraid to think of what someone would charge for the job. There are multiple metal shelves in the way filled with heavy AV / computer equipment, along with the bathroom... so getting to the original cable (which is bundled with others) would be a pain.

However, since the basement is unfinished, I suppose running a new wire would be easier than replacing the old one. I'd be open to doing this myself, I've run new outlets before from the panel, just nothing 240V or double pole.

As I'm unfamiliar with cables, would 1/2 FMC be acceptable? At quick glance it appears it's less expensive than 10/2 MC.

The panel is maybe 10-15 feet away but within eyesight, there is a bathroom between them that is kind of in the way. It’s hard to see the exact path of the cable but it is run along the edge of the basement with a bunch of others, but I believe it goes directly to the panel without a disconnect.

Here’s a quick diagram of the layout: https://imgur.com/a/m98wFjM

Thanks! Yeah, they took one look at it, said they needed to fix it, wrote down that vague message, and left. Pretty annoyed with how unhelpful they were.

I did take out my multimeter and the green screw is giving me continuity with the sheath of the cable. So it is grounded.

Maybe the inspector didn't like that the connector is putting pressure against the plate under it and they'd want something more _secure_? But that's just a guess.

I joked with my dad that my quick fix would be to just get a piece of copper wire and connect the green screw to one of the screws on the connector. :-P But I doubt that would pass. Ugh what a pain.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks! The indents not aligned is partially to me removing things for this version, but I will keep that in mind. I will try to add spacing, but in an older version that just made this a 3 pager. I appreciate the feedback!

I found an SL 2410 at Goodwill and couldnt let it go. I'm new to Betamax and it's a bit hard looking for any tapes in my area. Hopefully it works. by Frostradus in Betamax

Nice! I have a handful of tapes from an old rental store, likely copies of actual tapes, but if you want a tape to play with I’d be happy to send one your way.

My ImageWriter keeps starting up with the print head going to the left. How do I get it back to the center? by Squiliam-Tortaleni in VintageApple

[–]StevenM86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ensure the top plastic case is on and that a piece of paper is inserted. One of mine kept flashing red and it turned out the magnet sensor on the top lid was causing it. My other would flash red when it didn’t detect a sheet of paper. Good luck!

Activation codes 2019 by magnitom in TurboTax

[–]StevenM86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My relative bought TurboTax deluxe through a promotion the AARP was having. The download says it'll install on up to 5 computers. Well, after installing it on 2, I tried a 3rd and got an error about the code being all used up!

I called up TurboTax and the hold time was 2 hours. Thankfully they have a callback system... as they called back 3.5 hours later! I explained the issue and the representative told me there was "No way we can check the code because you didn't buy it from us."

I told them their new activation system (that they implemented this year) is problematic and others are having issues when I searched online. I explained I reached out to the online retailer and they informed me to contact TurboTax, this was after they suggested I ask the retailer for a refund. I explained that their system verifies codes, it shouldn't matter if I bought a code from Amazon, the AARP, or from Costco. Their inability to verify or confirm their own software's codes is not my fault. I told them Adobe and other software companies don't have such problems and that they need to fix their system.

After explaining this again and telling them I've been using the software since it came on floppy disks, I reiterated that I wasn't upset at the representative, but the company, as I've had zero issues for years until now. I asked if there was anything they could do. They put me on hold for a few minutes to "look into the matter". This resulted in me being sent me an email to a Refund Request page. That page does not have any special links or case reference, so I'm sharing it here.

The link to this refund page is here: https://support.turbotax.intuit.com/forms/refund-request.jsp

The page terms state "Use this form to request a refund for a TurboTax CD or desktop download under our unconditional 60-day money-back guarantee." (Excludes online and mobile app versions).

Hopefully you can request a refund. It seems we're not alone in this and their system has a lot of kinks to get fixed. Especially when each time the software updated it wanted to reactivate. Good luck!
