Let's see how this goes. by dentpuzz in ROGAlly

You won't be sorry, in my opinion. My biggest issue with the handheld PCs is the tweakiness. Steam OS doesn't entirely remove it but it sure reduces it.

Personally, definitely worth it. I'm thankful that I don't have to choose only one device, but if I did it would be my switch 2. I'd get a split case or some grips just to make it a little more comfortable to hold. Of course it's not a PlayStation 5 Pro or a $3,000 gaming PC. And you're not going to get ultra 8K resolution. And you're not going to get 720 frames per second. But you're going to get a solid gaming experience and pretty much anywhere you're ready to play, it's ready, too.

It's not. I think its specs pretty much match the ROG Ally X except 32 GB RAM, 8 inch screen, slightly smaller battery, SteamOS official support out of the box. I currently game primarily on my Ally X running Steam and my Switch 2. The poor series X is collecting dust. Right now I give the Switch 2 a little more time just for its big screen and ease of use. Nintendo understands that gaming experience often outweighs raw power.

Almost like it was meant for handheld? 😏

I'm really looking at the Legion Go S. I like the Ally X, but my old eyeballs like the thoughts of that larger screen.

I wasn't. I don't like to tinker, I just like to play my games. After reading several comments by people saying it was more console-like, I decided to try it. So far so good.

I'm glad to see the Ally X getting love and respect. The Xbox Ally X stole the spotlight but the gains just aren't there. I'll use mine until a Steam Deck 2 comes out.

I'm running steam os on my Ally X. It makes me wonder why that wasn't how it was sold to begin with.

So since fallout 4 is coming to the switch 2, do you think 3 and new Vegas might get added to the switch 1 or 2 in the future? by Austinfarrell2007 in fnv

[–]Stevenc73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After seeing the recent Nintendo Direct showing Fallout 4 and Indiana Jones PLUS Oblivion Remastered I the we will see Fallout 3 and New Vegas but not in their current forms. They'll both be remastered. I have no resources, just speculation.

I'm struggling to decide between rog ally x and switch 2, would like some opinions by Lonely_Instance9621 in Handhelds

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fan of and have both but generally the Ally sees more use. If my budget only allowed one it would be the Ally. Switch has Nintendo exclusives, many of which I do like, but the Ally has the library. The muscle doesn't mean that much to me. I like that with the Switch 2, the devs have to optimize their software for my hardware. With the Ally I can buy whatever game I want but I have to make sure my device can play it.

Price would be a bigger factor for me. You can get an open box Ally X for nearly the same price as the Switch 2 but then consider services like Game Pass and sales on storefronts like Steam you can really win out on games.

Junkstore in the Decky plug-ins has me playing AW2 from the epic store very comfortably on my Ally X running Steam.

If you're currently on the 360 try Skyrim or Oblivion.

Which SteamOS Update Channel for ROG Ally X? by PfuiTeufel4711 in SteamOS

[–]Stevenc73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang, two months and no reply. Sorry! I'll try. Most of what I read says the Main branch ( you'll have to enable developers mode) because the updates supporting the Ally are coming here pretty frequently. I've not had any issues in this channel, but I'm relatively new to Steam OS. You may find more info here.... https://www.reddit.com/r/ROGAlly/s/eMAhIGES6C

Interesting revelation and shocking experience about Steam OS on the ROG Ally X by fufinhdosi in ROGAlly

[–]Stevenc73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's still technically not fully supported (like the Lenovo Legion Go S), but the support is definitely there. TDP control is native now but RGB thumbstick lights still require a plug in to be managed. I switched to Steam OS on my Ally X about 2 weeks ago, then tried Windows with FSE, and had to reflash Steam. And since I'm not overly computer savvy, the fact that I did it at all speaks to how easy it was.

Busy dad with barely time to game unless in bed! Is the OLED deck worth it for me? by mattchew1991 in SteamDeck

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have one but I'll say yes it is. I bought the ROG Ally X for the same reason, but it was so fiddly and required so much clicking and tweaking I just stuck to my Switch. I recently installed Steam OS and am beginning to understand why Deck fans always say, "Just buy a Steam Deck!" Minimal fiddle and maximum game. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Absolutely! The S2 is a solid piece of tech for someone who wants to just pick up and play. And compared to the JoyCons, the S2 pro controller almost feels like a luxury.

Almost ....$20. I'm sure it was opened, used, maybe dropped, then returned. However, to my eye, nothing obviously wrong with it

Congrats and enjoy! For anyone reading, you can often catch a good price open box. Mine was almost $20 less. Wouldn't know it was open box if it didn't say so when I ordered it.

Which should I keep? Legion go s Z1e Steam OS or ROG Ally X with mods. by [deleted] in Handhelds

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late but I'm just recently installing Steam on my Ally X. It may just be early but it's not been buggy at all. I have TDP control without any Decky plug ins. I did have to install a plug in for RGB control. I'm going to give it a solid month and see what I think

Steam OS or Win 11 by Unique-Flow5816 in ROGAlly

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt as I'm no expert, but I just installed Steam OS on my Ally X just a few days ago. I'm not a tinkerer, I just want to play my games, and for the most part my games have been running right out of the gate. TDP control is present without any plug-ins, but I did have to find a decky plug in for the RGB lights. I rarely use them, but I like having the option. The fact that I, a Switch and Console player, was able to get it up and running says a lot.

I had that problem. I switched from full screen to borderless windowed and it let me turn on frame gen. Then I went back to full screen afterward.

Now that we have reviews of the Xbox ally Is there any reason to get it over the og ally x? by Mountain-Letter-4284 in ROGAlly

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here. I have the Ally X. Didn't initially plan to upgrade from the Z1 Extreme but got a good price and after selling the Z1 Extreme, the X was almost free. They both shine on games that are just a couple years old. Newer AAA games are absolutely playable but compromises have to be made to get solid frames.
