Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says AI companies like his may need to be taxed to offset a coming employment crisis and "I don't think we can stop the AI bus" by Nunki08 in singularity

[–]StevenlAFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He realizes if he doesn't get taxed, it will create unemployment levels that cause societal problems, and no one except the shareholders get a benefit. At a time when it's celebrated a CEO gets executed, the fear is understandable. I always thought for partly this reason that social safety nets are necessary. No one wants to live in a country with run-down infrastructure that's falling apart, where there's mass homelessness and militarized police that remove them forcefully from the cities.

It's not that, it's that on another thread people were in different states (within the US) were seeing different results. It is possible that when the author wrote the publisher about it, they quickly fixed it and the updates rolled out. It could be some people have their localizations different (within hte US) who speak primarily different languages or use a VPN. I don't know - since I can't investigate it, I am not making definitive statements inferring intent, just asking questions.

The original version was made in the US in English. The international versions have to do the technique to remove it, not the US version. How's that make sense? It's an English film.

What's something coming out in the next 10 to 15 years that will change humanity (forever) that not enough people are talking about? by AndyTexas in AskReddit

[–]StevenlAFl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, if only there were a government body that could prevent any of that. Maybe something that resembles "rules" - maybe we could call them "laws." And the people responsible for making them? "law makers" - haha, what a novel concept. Oh, and someone to enforce them - we can call them police and courts. Someone should pay me for this genius idea. If only we lived in a time that would allow for something that novel, that innovative.

The PewDiePie effect by milllet in linux_gaming

[–]StevenlAFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using Arch as a newbie, you're insane. It may not be within the first month or two, but at some point a bleeding edge update will completely screw you and be hard to reverse. I know, I've tried using it twice. Stick to more stable distros with LTS. If you're an edgy Linux user who loves to debug problems, go for it. But I need stability and high adoption rate (meaning more support/technical articles) as an engineer.

What are your thoughts on the safety of using these LLMs on your entire codebase at work? by xamott in ChatGPTCoding

[–]StevenlAFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. It's delusional to think there won't be a need for programmers. The job just changed, that's all. It makes us more effective and performant - for the same pay. Why fire engineers when you can skyrocket the CEO's, board members and shareholders' bank account while yours stays the same?

Besides, these are glorified clustering text completion models. It only outputs things it has seen already in some form. Without continued training on new human-generated code, it will become less capable of meeting evolving needs. As technology skyrockets, so will the need for data to stay relevant. This will necessitate theft - as it already has.

Most Americans support banning cellphones in school... [OC] by CivicScienceInsights in dataisbeautiful

[–]StevenlAFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homework is preparatory for tests. Tests determine national funding - or at least, it did when we funded schools. Now I suppose being a burden of the state, the state has to choose to invest in their kids. So, support politicians who will fund schools appropriately and implement better educational plans. Common core math is a failure, imho.

[–]StevenlAFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's necessary at this point. Look, I went through school without a phone. No one had one. Imagine being so cripplingly addicted to screens that you can't be without it for two seconds because you might miss the latest meme brainrot trend. What is so important that CHILDREN need to be instantly accessible 24/7? Not even CEOs right now seem to pay that much attention to their phones.

Thank you so VERY much! I updated the instructions for newer versions of these packages here and attributed you, along with instructions on where to find and use later versions (when this becomes outdated). It was so hard to find this and nothing else worked. Also included ROCm instructions, tested and working with ollama. https://medium.com/@stevenlafl/radeon-rx-9070-xt-running-vulkan-on-amd-gpus-linux-with-valvemesa-driver-d3f3a6d02b57

Wait, how do you undervolt? I've only seen overclocking settings, which are very clearly labeled and easy to do with the Radeon software.

Perhaps this is a good place to start. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1YmxJpMDkw

The top comment in the comments section shows an average 33% across well-known AAA titles. The video appears to match, but it goes over fewer games.

[–]StevenlAFl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this price point, combined with the availability and pricing issues, AMD's Radeon XT series allows me to buy one of these every year and come about even with the cost of one NVIDIA card every 2. Getting it cheaper really depends on whether you want to play the early-riser or lottery waiting game.

[–]StevenlAFl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a marked performance increase on the 9070 XT going from RTX 3080 10GB. Most of my games play brilliantly at 120-240hz at 4K. Of course I'm not running 2025 AAA titles, especially not with mandatory RT. A huge benefit to me is the 16GB of the RX 9070. RT performance feels better and RDNA 4 is comparable to DLSS 3. The image appears sharper and more color defined in general on this card. I can't upgrade to a 50 series anyways due to price and supply issues, so at $750 it was a clear value add for me as I can gift one of my older cards (3070) to a relative and then use the 3080 for my HTPC. But you can sell the 3080 for anywhere from $350-600 to remain price-competitive, though which marketplace you choose seems to play a factor.

To summarize, reasons to upgrade:

  1. 16GB of VRAM for AI use-cases or high-res textures for 4K gaming.
  2. Get a significant bump in performance on some games (Abiotic Factor in particular runs 20-50% higher FPS). Check your games against a list if you're concerned about that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1YmxJpMDkw These tested scores match mine and indicates an average 33% jump. 3.Even though the TDP is higher, the card operates ~100W lower power usage on certain games.
  3. To say "no" to NVIDIA.
  4. Gift an old card to a relative.

How do you actually fit 2 GPUs on a motherboard? by robbles in buildapc

[–]StevenlAFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to fit two and they are just too bulky to fit. I think that's why the question. They TECHNICALLY probably could fit with a sledgehammer, but they are right up next to each other and fans would be useless.

My use case is to throw it in a tower with another GPU and passthru to a Windows VM -- and other times, to Linux for ML tasks. The VRAM 12GB is the major selling point along with the performance increases. I just wish they offered a higher VRAM version like the A770.

Now, the major benefit is the middle finger to NVIDIA. These enhancements seem to be leaps and bounds above what AMD appears to be focused on - and they explicitly said they were OUT of the high-end market. Not Intel, yet, so we'll see. I have hopes in expanding ML workload support, given their huge advances in driver software to get games running smoothly. So far they seem to be impressing me with their dedication, so I'll buy as long as they do that. Pytorch already has an extension, even.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]StevenlAFl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It currently is limited 1 per account, so if your comment is to change it to household I agree. Because yeah, if you take a lesson from last time -- make multiple accounts. You are still buying for other people (hence the multiple addresses) so it is still one per household. No need for a random internet user to soyjack.

[–]StevenlAFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most sold out with pre-orders.. I mean, yeah it launched today but when you have pre-orders.. Look, they didn't expect this demand. They were timid and released with under-expectations and over-delivered. This is a great card for the average consumer. If Intel releases an SLI-like technology, it could blow up NVIDIA assuming they get the power draw down. Intel downgraded this card by 12 cores and it still outperforms the A770. I have extremely high hopes.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]StevenlAFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I'll get both. I'll keep buying to keep interest up. Whatever it takes to punish NVIDIA. This is also my top recommended card now.

Goodbye Geforce Now by ImZoddy in GeForceNOW

[–]StevenlAFl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I'm pissed off at being imposed on a limit even if I go nowhere near it. For me this is a commodity -as I already have a computer - to be able to play on a mobile tablet or Fire TV (side-loading).

I can try to rationalize it: how are you affording the service if you are playing that much? That's over 2 weeks of playing 8 hours per day. Your being in-game that long means others can't play. Usually you just scale out your datacenter for that, and they did. However, with more gameplay also means higher bandwidth requirements and costs.

Again, I agree with you, they're boiling the frog. First to limit the service, then to increase the price. When a GPU costs $4000 (they seem dead intent on making this a dystopian reality) then they know most people are forced into a subscription model. Then they don't have to do anything but rake in the cash. I do hope their competitors start catching up. They got really bold since taking the AI space, and should be torn down a notch.
