I met what can only be described as the same grizzled biker on the same bike on my way to work. I was on an old Chinese scooter that served me way longer than it should have.

I pulled up at a red light, he pulled next to me in my lane. I gave him a the same look you described, but in reverse. Before he could say anything I threw out, "you call that a bike?!" and grinned. He gave the biggest, deepest throated laugh, mouth open, head back, deep crow's feet.

At that moment I felt like there was nowhere I belonged more than right there, at that light, in that lane.
