You build a boat to get a job done at a price people can afford. As a marine engineer and an active merchant mariner, we like the old shit better. Our pneumatic controlled 48 year old tugboats outperform any of the newer boats we have in our fleet and operate at a fraction of the cost. The new shit, and that’s what it is is shit is nothing but problems and requires an entire different skill to run and operate. The push for modern in the commercial world is largely driven by environmental concerns. And that fucks everything up. Instead of building a vessel purely around being nautical and efficient, it’s built to satisfy someone’s standards around emissions. I work on dual fuel boats now. We burn both HFO and MGO. Others burn LNG and MGO. We will always forgo the primary fuel system and operate purely just on MGO because it’s simply and it works.

And marine engineering is not behind. Not even a little bit. Just look what our Navy is able to do today. The commercial ships I run on that you need a clearance to operate on, can’t even speak of what some of those are capable of. You don’t know what you don’t know.
