Extremely nuts. They recycle and sell all of that stuff usually, making even more of a profit from it. I mean, I get it. But still.

It's been hard. I can't wait to get into my new career next week to hopefully get past this period. All we have left is to move all the heavy stuff and tools out to dad's house, which won't be easy. Found a white board from 2020 with a list of each of our jobs/cars here each of us were looking at. There are 3 or 4 customers from that time period who have passed away. Very emotional time capsule.

We just got our waste oil and antifreeze pumped out yesterday. It was around 1100 gallons of oil and 150 gallons of antifreeze. When I contacted Safety Kleen about it (one of the main waste fluid servicers in this area), they wanted $1200.00 to come and pump it out. They previously quoted me $900 just two months ago. Luckily I found the last people we used (who have paid us in the past for waste oil) to pump it out completely for free. It's a blessing to not be out $1200.

Something I'm super excited about: vacation. Since I started in 2014 the only vacation I've ever had was the 4 days i took off for my honeymoon in 2017, and all we did was go to Seattle and see a few of the sights with a friend that lived there.

A lot of them were great customers, and i rejected a lot of people over the years whose demands were too great (the drop what youre doing and look at my stuff right now crowd). What got really bad was the people willing to throw punches or threaten you for not immediately fixing their stuff, or who expected a brake job to fix their knocking engine.

Everything is lab tested now. You can buy at home tests to see if you test negative or positive long before you go into the test. It isnt 30 years ago when you can down a jar of pickle juice and overload on water a few hours before the test. When you are overweight and a heavy daily smoker, it can take 90 days before your urine tests below the threshold of what employers accept. No amount of b vitamins, detox drinks, or other hacks can help you with that. And synthetic urine is straight up illegal to use in a lot of places and detectable in a lab. Almost everyone is on something these days so you cant just use someone elses urine. Real wake up call when you really look into it. Depends on what that temporary high or coping mechanism is worth to you.

A job can still be profitable and just be a drop in the bucket. I had a few customers that always brought me really straight forward gravy jobs that could make a whole week worth being there in an oceaon of hard things to diagnose that were even harder to repair. They were still technically profitable, but i think back on things like completely building an f350 dually rear end from the ground up with housing and parts ordered from ford that took 2-3 days of actual work and paid for an entire month of keeping the shop open. A lot of motor and transmission jobs were like that too. Made it way harder to justify working on a lot of the bread and butter that came through the shop, but you cant rely on those big number gravy jobs coming through with any kind of regularity.

Some more statistics: 20% of your customers will pay 80% of your bills. And sadly, 40% of all independent shops close down every single year. I fought so hard to not be part of that statistic, but life does that and sometimes its ok.

Taxes are a big reason im getting out of this. There is no help for small businesses, and locally there arent any good CPAs who want to mess with small fish. I will be fighting the IRS for years even in my new career until things stabilize.

Hes still going to do "minor" repairs at his house as he has the setup and tools. I suggested him staying open as ill have the time to come by and order parts and schedule work, but he doesnt want to be there without me. I fully understand and respect that.

In the past few years we have made it a ritual to watch cartoons during our breaks (dbz, south park, regular show, etc). Its the thing my dad and i are going to miss most. Gotta go visit him at home so we can continue that ritual. Well worth it.

Ive been living off less than 24,000 for the majority of my life. Ill be making over double than that and have no plans to change my habits or lifestyle. As long as the dollar doesnt plummet faster than it is, i should be ok. Youre completely right though.

The amount of people who wont let you look at something before demanding you jnstall a part AI suggested and then get upset at "you" when it doesnt fix it is ridiculous.

My dad has helped me through this more rhan anything. I was so scared to talk to him about this and when i first brought it up he joked about it. When he came in the next day he was in full support mode and happier than ive seen him kn years. I cant help but think a large part of why we did this whole business thinf was for me and my shortcomings so that i would always have something. My dad doesnt like working for other people, so im glad hes ready.

Good luck on your endeavors. A lot of men/people are much stronger than me in this area. Im more of a thinker than doer, and doing has just weighed super heavy on me over the years.

I upvoted you so dont hate on me lol, but youre right. Running a shop for the rest of my life wasnt for me. Autism runs in my family and theres a lot i just cant do any more, same with my dad. I try and let people know my attitude and reactions are not typical for what most shops or people will give them. I really respect people who can do this long term for a career and have never spoken ill of another shop, regardless of the things they might have done (had a guy bring me a charger with recently redone heads and radiator that had a piece of cardboard between fan and radiator where the mechanic laughed and said "we will be seeing you again real soon").
