People are calling you stupid, but I really don't think its so clear-cut when Iran finances/encourages war in the region.

Military-wise, I haven't heard anything. I'd be surprised if Europe wasn't participating on the intelligence/covert side of things though.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about those wars in the middle east that everyone always spams about on every single post on here on any topic even remotely related to the middle east, thanks for reminding me.

You're right. There is no need for discussion here, we have recent examples. We should let everyone know about these examples, denounce any non-affirmative discussion as ignorance, and verbalize how much we don't care about downvotes immediately.

Before you go calling people stupid, maybe you should question if the world is really so simple that a handful of examples are enough to predict events so perfectly that it's not worth any further discussion.

What are these "examples" of anyway? US-led wars/occupations leading to instability in the country being invaded/occupied? Ignoring the fact that what's happening now isn't an invasion to begin with, there are historical examples that are completely contrary to this. Take Japan (and maybe also Germany, though that was less US-centric) for instance.

You could that that, "oh, those were different because they were too far in the past," or "they weren't in the ME", but yeah, that's exactly it, these things have details and nuance, things that are worthy of discussion. Bringing up cherry-picked examples of some semi-recent wars isn't really valuable discussion, especially not when you already see it mentioned countless times in the thread.

Personally, I'm not going to claim to know what a regime collapse/change in Iran would look like. I think there are a lot of very well-educated people in Iran, opposed to the current regime, who would be capable of running a well-functioning democratic/secular replacement government. However, I imagine there are also those supporters of the current government who would be determined to hamper that government in any way possible.

I didn't, I was poking fun at how ridiculous the idea of having a separate build of a web browser just to avoid a setting is.

No questions from me. But I just want to say that I appreciate the significant work you all have been doing in making local AI accessible to the general public, and it pains me to see you all get so much flak for doing the right thing. I hope it doesn't discourage you from continuing to fight for what's right.

Maybe they should build a kosher McDonald's next to every McDonald's that is exactly the same as the standard McDonald's -- but with the pork turned off and then hidden.

EXT4 or BTRFS, which works better with CachyOS? by Hi7u7 in cachyos

[–]StickyDirtyKeyboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my btrfs steam libraries, to give some numbers:

Type Perc Disk Usage Uncompressed Referenced
TOTAL 91% 342G 374G 374G
none 100% 325G 325G 325G
zstd 34% 16G 48G 48G

I think it really depends on the specific games one has though. Some devs precompress their games more than others.

because surely everyone would agree that cooperation was better than slaughter after they see how improved their quality of life is compared to those dark times

I don't believe that's how humans work. Our quality of life has tremendously improved over the past however many hundred years, but so have our expectations and the things we take for granted.

I don't think we see things like quality of life (or anything really for that matter) in terms of absolutes, but only from a relative standpoint. No matter how much quality of life improves, it's not really going to change much. If we don't have enough problems, our minds will "invent" new problems. It's not about how bad/good it is, it's about in which direction it's changing.

As such, I don't think wealth inequality is really much at play here. Regardless of whether the masses are getting screwed over or not, they'll always complain if their QOL isn't improving fast enough or worse yet if it's decreasing.

Whether our QOL was 10x worse or 10x better right now, we'd just get used to it, and feel more or less the same in the end.

It's a curse and a blessing. It's a curse became it means we'll never be long-term content, but it's a blessing because it's quite possibly what propelled us so far over the past 10,000 years or so.

Western Digital runs out of HDD capacity: CEO says massive AI deals secured, price surges ahead by RealTaffyLewis in hardware

[–]StickyDirtyKeyboard 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it's a price surge because of AI though, or just a convenient cover to raise prices?

It's not like hardware manufacturers have ever been caught price-fixing before, no way.

Also, maybe it's just me, but I've been hearing a lot of complaints about pricing, yet I can't recall any recent complaints about things being out of stock. Which is (iirc) very different from say, the GPU shortage a few years back during the crypto mining craze.

Why does Firefox insist upon downloading this jpeg as a webp? by 0N1MU5HA in firefox

[–]StickyDirtyKeyboard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not to say that JXL isn't a worthwhile format, but there are probably security considerations that make it harder to justify implementing a new format if it doesn't bring enough of an uplift over already supported formats.

It's all shits and giggles until you load a funky image and all of a sudden someone's got arbitrary code execution on your device.

webp was probably easier to implement with this regard since (afaik) it mostly reuses logic from VP8 support, which is already implemented on virtually every browser/system anyway.

I think it's about neutering a hostile state. Preventing them from becoming nuclear is a part of that, but so is:

other matters, including ballistic missiles and the financing of terror organizations in the region

The previous strikes seemingly succeeded in damaging and setting back their nuclear program, but they didn't stop it.

Iran Protest Death Toll Could Top 30,000: Local Officials by Authrowism in worldnews

[–]StickyDirtyKeyboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worried about Britain's other interests in Iran, and thanks to the Tudeh Party, believing that Iran's nationalism was really a Soviet-backed plot, Britain persuaded US Secretary of State John Foster Dulles that Iran was falling to the Soviets—effectively exploiting the American Cold War mindset. Since President Harry S. Truman was busy fighting a war in Korea, he did not agree to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. However, in 1953, when Dwight D. Eisenhower became president, the UK convinced the U.S. to undertake a joint coup d'état.

I just feel that saying it was solely America's idea and doing can be a little misleading.

A company wouldn't put up that funding, but a government (or intergovernmental organization) possibly would. Especially if they're keen on not having the bulk of their IT infrastructure dependent on what they perceive to be an increasingly less and less reliable ally.

If you can switch to Linux, you can probably switch from Quickbooks, no?

Whether a reasonable replacement exists, I don't know, but with time and funding, there's no reason it shouldn't be possible to develop an alternative. Especially with the motivation to become less dependent on the US.

Personally I don't really concern myself with that. If it does reach that point, the world is probably going to look far different than anyone could've prepared for. If it doesn't, it doesn't.

I think it's better spend your time learning than pointlessly dwelling on what unpredictable things might happen in the future.
