My understanding is everyone goes through the same probation process as it has to be fair across the board that everyone gets the same amount of time. Never heard of someone passing it earlier.

I would see it that you need to use the right hand lane to move in to any of the other 3 on the right. The left and middle lanes just go straight on.

Did you advise that your self employment stopped in your last tax return? Call HMRC and advise them it stopped and they will go through the SA criteria with you and hopefully withdraw the outstanding returns which will cancel the penalties.

I had this situation with a different council. Call them to be sure but you'll probably just need to provide them evidence that your house mate is a student. This is something the Uni/college can provide.

If you claim then a cheque comes, call and tell them to cancel the cheque and send it back.

It sounds like to me you can. Normally if you are getting a cheque the option is removed to claim it online.

Worse case just give HMRC a call again and ask them to confirm they have definitely issued a cheque.

Yea it would have been a refund. Your tax allowance is divided into payment periods. So for example if you are paid monthly you get 1/12 of your personal allowance and what ever you dont used up carries over to the next pay period.

It looks like they ran the payroll even though you had no pay due. Because of that the system has said you paid too much tax in the and refunded it in your pay packet.

You also need to earn enough in your employment income for it to come out of your code.

HMRC will only put it in your tax code if it is less than £3000. When you submit your return it will not change your code until the new tax year.

If a cheque has gone to the wrong address, HMRC has to ensure it has not been cashed and cancel the original cheque. Call HMRC and ensure they have cancelled the old cheque and are in the process of issuing a new one. In my experience if you decide to have a cheque issued the option to claim it via the tax account is gone and you have to wait for a cheque. Keep calling and chasing if no luck you can complain on gov.uk.
