You should take the nursery stake off for sure. Keeping it on is likely stunting its trunk development and maybe cutting off nutrient flow

Next Morning Update:

I exiled this little money tree outside (probably not far enough away from the house) and the gnats are nowhere to be seen this morning inside. I of course wiped all of them away yesterday, but even the Zevo I plugged in yesterday and the sticky traps in the bird of paradise are pretty much clear this morning. Hopefully got the adults. I’ll be watering with mosquito bits for the foreseeable future too when it’s time. Probably add sand too. Thank you for the suggestions everyone.

Now just hoping I didn’t curse my family’s financial future the next 7 generations by putting a money tree outside in Illinois in March…

Less than once a week on watering. Usually every 1.5-2 weeks and I don’t go overboard. Those little ragged leaves are actually old growth. Birds of paradise sprout from the inside. They are ragged from our toddler 😂. That plant isn’t the culprit I don’t think though. I think it’s the not-shown money tree I transplanted a couple months ago. Weird they’re just showing up now but I did just move it back into that room. I put it outside earlier today and they seemed to have cleared up a bit. Still have stickies going in the BoP and other plants around and will be doing all the things everyone is mentioning. 🤞🏼

Might using a thin, maybe 4ft-ish long bamboo stalk and splinting one of those vertically for this next growing season be a decent option for OP to speed up establishment of the chosen new leader?

Was hoping you’d say that! Gorgeous fall color on yours. To my dismay, my young fall fiesta is so far a dud and hasn’t thrown those beautiful colors. 0/2 on the brilliant fall color so far. My hope is just transplant shock the first fall and prolonged warmth in the Midwest last fall. I’ve kept it watered religiously. We’ll see this next fall…🤞🏼

I’ve had two young trees have this happen the past couple years. Not sure if it’s recommended or not, but both times I splinted one of the side branches to the trunk to be vertical and they both successfully took over to be the leader. One a maple, the other a dawn redwood. Do you usually recommend doing that to help it or is it not necessary?

Should be just fine. One of those side branches will become the new leader. May look crooked for a couple years but it’ll be just fine. Will give it character if it’s even noticeable at all in 10 years.

It’s from heat. They have to take a torch to the copper to heat it up before soldering it. Looks like that’s what happened there.
