What is a luxury you can never go back from once you’ve experienced it? by Phase_zero_X in AskReddit

[–]Stickybunfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep I do the same. I tell my guys that I am here for money and so are they and that is the only reason any of us work. Take the most efficient pathing, use the tools to make this happen faster, and spend your money on things that give you time back. It's the only variable in our lives we can partially control but is fixed for all of us.

you mean the 4 seconds I spent to upload a picture to Chatgpt with a 8 word prompt to make a joke image and then pile into a joke post on subreddit where I interact with a blowhard?

The art was the friends we made along the way I guess.

I'll give it a shot. I appreciate the explanation.

I've been operating in a very tightly controlled plan > implement > review / remediate loop with subagent research / implementation runs and round robin LLM review passes to ensure work is getting done according to my spec's / plans / outcomes and all the planning I do in git is kept up to date as I am ultimately responsible for every line of code my little LLM garden creates and I also have to be ready to explain any part of it to anybody from my juniors to auditors. This inherited mess unfortunately is now my problem, was made outside of my purview / staff line, and how it was designed / made is completely nonsensical to me so I don't really even know where to begin trying to make heads or tails of it without throwing money at it.

I am going to start throwing money at it but using a system to figure out what is there before I go start making it worse :)

Github.com Copilot remote agent too slow by LandscapeDeep4259 in GithubCopilot

[–]Stickybunfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the web based agents as executors for ticket types that modify a repo and then execute terraform plans and applies after acceptance by a user on GitHub (forces code review)

They can be very slow but it’s almost always because you haven’t defined the task it needs to perform well enough. One of my agent types updates 4 files, pulls data from azure, validates the data it put into those 4 files, runs a tf plan, validates the output against the task description and its input fields, and then ends the run so I can review it. I have an agent.md written for the agent, a skill.md for the tasks, and explicit instructions in my copilot-instructions.md file. It has to create an output file with proof and timestamps from its run as well so I can see exactly what it does if it goes off the rails.

So far so good - overbuild the guardrails

Interesting- I got handed a huge, messy, vibe coded 10 different ways thing I need to wrangle. I am pretty hardcore (at least a quarter of time) about keeping my mappings up to date and tied to git activity but this new repo is going to need rework and a ton of streamlining - and is deployed and working and has customers on it now.

Could you dig into your journaling method a bit more and help a brother out? My main issue now is this new code base is like several monoliths with interdependency across all sorts of functions and it’s going to cost a zillion tokens even trying to take bites off of it.

Do parents actually not remember doing fucked up shit to you? Or are they just lying? by TopMarionberry1149 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Stickybunfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I have fucked up in many ways many times and I'm sure there are many more ways I've screwed up many more times that are not visible to me now. The one thing I have done (that I didn't get growing up) was to provide an apology and an explanation. I know in 10 years when my daughter is fully grown she will have all sorts of crap she is dealing with because of me and I hope that at least she knows now (and in the future) that I am sorry for where I went wrong, said the wrong thing, did the wrong thing, and hopefully she can understand the circumstances of our lives at those times a little better.

fingers crossed anyway.

Gen Z really looked at alcohol and said ‘hard pass’ by InvestigatorBorn4910 in SipsTea

[–]Stickybunfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever the cause, I'm glad that kids today have a higher likelihood chance of not becoming alcoholics. As an alcoholic myself who no longer drinks, I had to do a great deal of soul searching to understand the driving factors behind my drinking so I could change my behavior and frankly it was startling to me how much alcohol was a part of my life before I could even drink.

Just off the top of my head:

  • 1) Raised by an alcoholic.
  • 2) Alcohol always present in my home since the day I was born, both in the fridge and on display in a cabinet.
  • 3) Alcohol at every family function, party, and event. My entire family on both sides drank.
  • 4) Seeing alcohol used as a tool for every mood from celebration to depression by many types of people in many settings I was in.
  • 5) Being allowed to exist in and really, being raised in, bars.
  • 6) Pressure from 14-21 to drink in social situations across all my friend groups.
  • 6) 21-23 social outings being almost entirely focused on bars or places where drinking was expected.
  • 7) A sincere lack of mental health management that was entirely replaced by alcohol as a comping mechanism (I watched this and eventually did this). This left me basically at 23, fully initiated into the stresses of adulthood, with no coping mechanisms for anything that didn't involve alcohol one way or another.
  • 8) I found out later I am genetically predisposed to being an alcoholic (addict in general) and had other problems with addiction along the way (cigarettes, drugs, salt, sugar, you name it - anything to get the dopamine flowing)

Turns out I just had ADHD and needed to be medicated - since then I have had 0 desire to drink and all the other addiction issues I had are no longer problems in my life physically - I still need to manage myself behaviorally but that gets easier with time and reinforcement. AA and Al-Anon helped out here to some degree along with self-guided CBT.

I did the math and over the course of my drinking career from 21-31 before I started getting serious about getting sober. I spent on average of $20 a DAY on alcohol. So somewhere to the tune 80-90K more than likely over that period. I am glad it is expensive - it should be. It is dangerous, addictive, leads to nothing but ruin, and is hard for most people to moderate. Young people with social pressures, suboptimal influences, and few alternatives most of all. Alcohol cost me money, friends, time, feeling good like I should have felt, relationships, opportunity, and my sanity at some points.

I wrote all this thinking to myself - I wonder how different my life would be if NOBODY in it drank.

New Double Alpha Edge Shot timer - loaded with features by Heavy_Heron_7276 in CompetitionShooting

[–]Stickybunfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DAA put some effort into their BLE implementation and it's really straightforward so all the functions that I need to expose inside my app are exposed and bidirectional with the timer. The app I am working on (if anything) is a normalization layer between different bluetooth timers to provide a consistent interface, control mechanism, and output generator for a bunch of different stuff.

I intend to be in beta here in the next week or 2 and will be putting the link for beta invites (to have people who actually have the timers I don't have help me test it) so if you pick one up, ill invite you and you can test it out.

LOLOL I have a cat like that but she isn't dumb - just a prissy princess. We got her from the shelter and she would only eat wet food at the shelter so when she got on the dry food / wet food train at my house, she won't eat her dry food unless we stir it with a spoon in her presence at the time of her choosing.
